UFN 21 Preview: Takanori Gomi Says He Will KO Kenny Florian

"I'm preparing well and I will not have problems adapting to the octagon. Mr. Florian is a fighter with good skills, one of the best of its kind in the UFC. It is a good opponent for a good start. I make a good fight for the public and start a successful outcome."

"Today, all MMA practitioners know how to fight a little of everything. I know he is a dangerous fighter with a good game on the floor... [I will win] By knockout in the 1st round!"

"Since I entered the UFC, always made clear that the belt is my goal. I will get this title for the Japanese, its what we all want... [BJ Penn] is a tremendous fighter. But I know my ability and I know I'm the right person to cause problems him in the UFC. I am patient and will wait for my chance."

Although we all know what the outcome of Penn vs Gomi 2 will be, I still wanna see it.

Don’t stop believing.

Sure glad Lesnar got his shit straightened out.

I REALLY want Gomi to win, but I think that Florian is going to take this

Florian is actually getting better and is a very well-rounded Lightweight. Gomi is great (when he wants to be), but with his recent losses and his recent performances, I have a lot of doubt that we will see the Gomi of old. I will be rooting for Gomi to win, but Florian is not easy to beat.

by chrisbboy82 on Jan 26, 2010 2:29 PM EST reply actions

Here's to hoping Gomi lands that big shot that ends Kenny's night.

cause if he doesn’t, I think Kenny will jab his way to a RogerHuerta-ish decision.

But… but kenny florian finishes fights, right?

yes,

but against a tough durable, and heavy handed guy like Gomi, I think he would fight like he did against Huerta, and to some extent, the way he was striking against BJ.

by Anton Tabuena on Jan 26, 2010 2:38 PM EST up reply actions

Gomi will need to be motivated. His sloppiness as of late will get him owned against Florian at times if he’s lazy. Motivated, Gomi should win.

This is Gomi’s chance. When I was younger and lived at home I shared a bathroom with my younger brother. Now my brother is filthy and an awful person to share a bathroom with, but being that we had always shared the same bathroom it was assumed by our parents that we were both dirty. My brother and I knew this wasn’t the case and that he was the source of things getting extra nasty. When I moved out we had a long talk about it. I told him that if he could change and be clean now that I was gone, he could blame it all on me and I would be the dirty one. If he couldn’t then basically nothing would change and they would still think we were both dirty. This has a point and here it is, Gomi has a similar chance. A loss means nothing since he has looked so awful recently. A win, and he is capable of winning, is a huge hit on KenFlo’s street cred. It will really shake up the LW division if he wins. Its a Gomi that couldn’t buy a win in Japan beating the #2 LW in the UFC. It makes a rematch with Penn warranted.

So did you brother take advantage of the opportunity?

by Sventsh on Jan 26, 2010 3:03 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t live with him, but I use this example of opportunity a lot. It’s Gomi’s chance to disrupt the status quo and change the was people think about not only him, but MMA in Japan.

I love parables! However, I feel like Kenny is still improving, and Gomi’s been stagnant for several years. I like both guys, but I think Kenny’s going to take this pretty handily.

To his credit, Huerta is VERY difficult to finish. I mean, Florian had Huerta’s back in the first round and was working for the choke, but Huerta managed to escape. He kicked Huerta in the face, and all Huerta did was spit on the floor.

by chrisbboy82 on Jan 26, 2010 2:40 PM EST up reply actions

that was my point actually.. It wasn’t a shot at Kenny really. Gomi is durable, and hits hard too, so Im leaning on the fight looking a lot like the one against Huerta.

by Anton Tabuena on Jan 26, 2010 2:54 PM EST up reply actions

I hope Gomi finishes Kenny, because I want to see Gomi/Penn II

Kenny is already the Rich Franklin of the LW division.

Kenny by sub.

Sadly...

Gomi gasses going into the second and Kenny wins a lackluster decision. Then the UFC does BJ & Kenny as coaches on TUF12 and a rematch in December. You heard it here first.

Florian is the #2 lightweight in the world period.

Have you seen any of his fights in the last two years?

I have

After the Sherk fight he made short work of everyone the UFC gave him except for Huerta (tough, tough guy) and Penn (“HE’S GONNA THINK I’M GOD”).

I finish beers at 1:55.

by ihateemo on Jan 26, 2010 3:09 PM EST up reply actions

This is my mistake, because I read that as “Gomi is the #2 lightweight in the world period.”

by szucconi on Jan 26, 2010 3:11 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah...

and none of the guys he faced were even top 10.

-Dokonjonosuke Mishima
-Alvin Robinson
-Din Thomas
-Joe Lauzon
-Roger Huerta
-Joe Stevenson

Stevenson was probably the closest to being top ten.

Please don’t discredit a fighter’s opposition in an effort to discredit a fighter or his ranking. It honestly doesn’t work. You can make a case for Shinya Aoki being the #2 Ligthweight in the world, but then it can be argued that he hasn’t fought anyone in the UFC to prove that. You can make the case for Gray Maynard, but he only faced one top 10 as well (Frankie Edgar). Sean Sherk lost to Frankie Edgar, and Frankie Edgar lost to Gray Maynard. Really, especially for the Lightweight Division, discrediting opposition to prove rankings just does not work.

Clay Guida. He came back after a complete annihilation and looked better than he ever has. Better than anybody ever has against Guida.

Gomi has the chin and athletic abilities to at worst be the second best LW in the world… Unfortunately he doesn’t have the heart and discipline to realize this potential.

by mmalogic on Jan 26, 2010 2:48 PM EST reply actions

BJ Penn had no discipline either for a while and then things turned around… Maybe the UFC is what Gomi needs.

by xDieseLx on Jan 26, 2010 3:13 PM EST up reply actions

but even the undisciplined version of BJ Penn hadn’t lost a fight at LW since 2002. when you think about it, the whole Penn/discipline thing is kinda overblown anyways. I don’t think even a super disciplined/motivated BJ Penn could beat GSP, Hughes (in his prime), or Machida. Think about it, Penn’s only LW loss ever is to a prime Jens Pulver in BJ’s 4th pro fight; Gomi lost to much lower caliber fighters when Gomi already had a world of experience.

He did beat Hughes in Hughes’s prime.

Wasn't

BJ putting it to Hughes when he hurt himself in the 2nd fight?

I’m really hoping Gomi wins, but Kenny is now at the next level, he’s improved immeasurably, he’s a different fighter now than he was with Dellagrotte. The Kenny Florian of right now would annihilate the Kenny Florian of 10 mins ago

Kenny will beat Gomi......

he iz tailormade to beat a guy like Gomi…..

Ken-Flo is the perfect opponent for Gomi

Gomi will not have to worry about getting taken down or knocked out.

you mean like how Flo

took down Guida? Who has some of the better wrestling in that bracket?

A mediocre single at 1:30 of rd 1 that he managed to land but do nothing with.
Stuffed the takedown about 20 seconds later and stuffed a throw 10 seconds after that.
BIG pick-up and slam at :35 left in rd 1.

I was very surprised to see Guida completely outwrestled by Florian

bj is clearly the #1in lw

but i think kennys clearly the #2

i dont like aoki or alvarez and think they’d both get destroyed in the ufc

kennys so well rounded he’ll easily be the champ when bj goes up and i think he could give bj a decent fight if he employs a different strategy i dont see gomi standing a chance

Worrying quote
I intend to carry out my training continuously in the United States, but I have not decided anything about it. I received some calls, but I have not thought enough on the subject.

Gomi really needs to train with someone other than his students to get back in contender form. That he still seems undecided on going to a decent camp two months before the fight is no good news.

by Jean Parmesan on Jan 27, 2010 3:29 AM EST reply actions

Only way Kenny losses this is if he has another brainfart like he did against BJ with a horrible gameplan. Aside from that Kenny should take this in dominant fashion, it’s going to be interesting to see if Kenny can finally get that big name win that he’s lacking in his career so far.
