Top 10 Contender, and former DREAM Lightweight Champion, Joachim Hansen (19-8-1) has decided to make the drop to challenge the current featherweight champ, Bibiano Fernandez (7-2).

According to MMAMania, the bout could happen at DREAM.13:

According to multiple sources, the Norwegian fighter will move down to featherweight and, if the current negotiation comes to fruition, face current DREAM featherweight champion, Bibiano Fernandes (7-2), in a title bout.

The bout has been agreed upon, but awaits official confirmation from DREAM. If signed, the bout will likely be part of the upcoming DREAM fight card, which has been rumored to take place in March.

On the same night that Bibiano Fernande [Top 4 FW] was crowned as their first featherweight champion, Joachim Hansen lost his Lightweight Title to Shinya Aoki [Top 2 LW] in the final chapter of their trilogy. This made 'Hellboy' decide to go for greener pastures at featherweight, and it would be interesting to see how he performs at a lighter weight class.

Love to watch Hellboy fight. Just hope the drop doesn’t hurt him.

Hellboy has been really small for a lightweight for a long time, I think he’ll be fine.

Hansen said he would never fight for UFC because of how they jerked him around contractually after the PRIDE purchase. I’m guessing that extends to WEC too.

thats a shame two guys i been waiting for the UFC to sign is Alverez and Hansen both guys put it all on the line every fight. UFC and WEC has a lot of talent in the lower weight classes id love to see these guys fight

Hansen has also had contract issues with Pride and K-1. He seems to be the problem, not the organizations.

A lot of these issues can be solved with money. I would love to see Hansen in the WEC against another striker like Leonard Garcia or just against the top guys of the WEC Featherweight Division.

I’d easily take Bibiano in this fight. Hansen’s only chance is with his power because his takedown defense is non-existent.

Is DREAM gonna switch their featherweight class to 145 or will Hansen be cutting to 138?

by George Lucas on Jan 26, 2010 1:30 AM EST reply actions

Ouch

Hadn’t considered that. 138.9 will be a tough make I think.

Doesn’t Hellboy usually weigh in at like 150?

by grein on Jan 26, 2010 8:11 AM EST up reply actions

Raaaaaaaaad!

Hansen’s either going to have to brush up on his takedown defense in a big way or bank on being able to sweep or sub a better jiu-jitsu player. But I don’t care! This will rule!

I like this move. He has always been too small for Lightweight.

This fight is going to be so awesome. Would love to see a date for the next DREAM show…waiting too long for my Japanese MMA, dammit.
