Miguel Torres fires his camp, now with Mark Dellagrotte and Robert Drysdale:

"I've used the same training partners for 11 or 12 years, and I haven't brought any of them back for this fight," Torres told the Las Vegas Sun. "What ended up happening was — I wasn't getting cocky, they got cocky. They would say, 'Oh, you're going to kill this guy. He's only got seven fights.'"

Evolution, but did he need to throw his team under the bus

Dick move.

Change is good for growth. The loss was a great reminder that fighting is a brutal sport and you’re only as good as your last win.

There was no reason for him to shoot his old team that got him to the championship and helped him maintain his dominance until the last fight.

I thought he was classier than this.

There seems to be a definite career arc for this generation of MMA fighters...

Phase 1 build your rep fighting with an established team
Phase 2 start your own gym
Phase 3 skills deteriorate due to being the owner of the team
Phase 4 leave team to go back to being just a member of an established team

Seems like a re-occurring theme with alot of fighters now days.

Sure glad Lesnar got his shit straightened out.

We’ll see if it was a good idea or bad when he fights, so I’ll withhold my judgment until then.

I wasn’t getting cocky, they got cocky. They would say, ‘Oh, you’re going to kill this guy. He’s only got seven fights.’"

This is just weak. You’re your own man, dude, if you felt that way then you should speak up since you’re the one forking over the money.

I agree that quote comes off poorly, but I take his meaning. A guy like Miguel, who’s been the teacher and leader of his own team and gym and came up the hard way, fighting for years in small shows, in a nearly ignored division, can end up in that bubble, as he puts it. He owns the gym, and he’s the best, most experienced guy around, there’s no one to challenge him, to push him, and to criticize him. That’s an “us against the world” mentality that can be good for the team, but not so good for Miguel to keep developing and opening himself up to new ideas and methods. So I’m pretty interested to see if it works for him, and if he really does start to utilize his total game. Hopefully he’s humble, and wise enough, to become the student again. Frank Mir’s heart DEPENDS on it!

That is the sign of a truly smart fighter. He knows when things get stale with the ppl surrounding him and when to move on. Having a bunch of “yes men” around him definitely made him complacent with his preparation and training.

point taken...

but throwing them under the bus and not taking any responsibility for your loss? That’s a little bit lame.

Whatever he needs to tell himself to put the loss behind him.

Keep firing Assholes!

Mind numbing, tedious and ultimately self defeating.

Is this really hard to believe? Regularly when I’m watching UFC/WEC fights, particularly prelims, I’m blown away by how incompetent some of these corner crews are. And a lot of them seem to live vicariously through their fighters, talking a bunch of smack and hoping their athlete will back it up for them.

by smoogy2 on Jan 25, 2010 6:31 PM EST reply actions

You mean like when they randomly scream GSP sokoudjou machida?

"You hit too hard, too hard, too hard..."

by spectaa on Jan 25, 2010 6:44 PM EST up reply actions

Watch Jesse Forbes vs. Nick Catone if you can find it… the AZCS guys in his corner just keep screaming “TWO!” the entire fight, and between rounds they give him the same advice in verbal form… “just keep spamming that left cross!” (I’m paraphrasing)

Eventually Catone just starts shooting in on the left cross and steals the fight.

by smoogy2 on Jan 25, 2010 7:29 PM EST up reply actions

Haha I saw it, “two…TWO…two…two…”
two= right jab
three= left hook or cross
Everybody cracked the code even goldberg: “he looks for the three two again!”

"You hit too hard, too hard, too hard..."

by spectaa on Jan 25, 2010 8:02 PM EST up reply actions

“1” is your lead hand jab, “2” is your cross, regardless of whether you are left or right handed. At least that is the number system I’m familiar with. Apparently they didn’t even want him to set it up with a jab, they just called for the cross, by itself, the entire fight

by smoogy2 on Jan 25, 2010 8:27 PM EST up reply actions

Doh, I had it backwards in my previous post. Forbes was throwing a RIGHT cross. I was thinking left because I’m left-handed.

by smoogy2 on Jan 25, 2010 8:27 PM EST up reply actions

Oh ok, didn’t know that, I’ll pay attention.

"You hit too hard, too hard, too hard..."

by spectaa on Jan 25, 2010 9:14 PM EST up reply actions

I was under the impression everybody had different meanings for the numbers and that was the point of the code. Your corner could yell two and your opponent wouldn’t know it was a jab as opposed to just yelling “jab.” I actually thought they were usually different combinations.

The man know simply as "Christmas Cheesesteak"

by Neil Manich on Jan 26, 2010 12:26 AM EST up reply actions

Some of them do use different number systems, but “the 1-2” is pretty universally recognized as a jab-cross combo, and it was clear that they were referring to Forbes’ right cross in this instance.

by smoogy2 on Jan 26, 2010 1:32 AM EST up reply actions

Cool, I didn’t know that.

Something similar cost Shogun. I’m of the belief that your corner guys should be skeptical at all times and express to the fighter that every second of the fight should be spent trying to finish the fight as the victor.

torres needed to lose

now that hes got a fire under his ass he can maxiize his talent

i see benevidez getting destroyed and the rematch with bowles being a battle i love bowles but i have diffuculty thinking he can beat a fully motivated torres, bowles has extreme power though so he always has a shot to end fights at any given moment

I like this move.

I wish Cro Cop would do the same thing. It’s hard to breathe stagnant air.
