Quote of the Day: "The Ultimate Fighter Could Be the Saturday Night Live of Pro Sports"

Spiketv_medium

SI.com: How much longer do you see The Ultimate Fighter being a viable product?

Diamond: I think it can go as long as we can all come up with new concepts and ways to keep it fresh each time. That's the challenge for us. In 10 seasons, and now 11 because I kind of know what's going on for the next season, as long as that exists it can keep going. We always have new fighters coming up. Fortunately we have the luxury right now of five weight classes, so we can mix that up. It's a feeder system that just keeps feeding itself. I don't think there's a lack of interest in it. i think guys watching love to get into the idea of character, and for them it's a vehicle because they've seen the gestation period go from start to finish. Hey, I watched the show. I got to know Kenny Florian. Now I really like him and feel invested in him watching pay-per-views over the next couple years. We could be the Saturday Night Live of pro sports.

Sounds about right, because it has become a joke.

And once they make it big time they falter like Jimmy Fallon.

I think this is false because it would imply that at some point it will go through another good period.

I dislike Matt Hughes. Shogun beat him like a dirty horse.

And people will always complain it was better back in the old days, remembering stuff like Griffin-Bonnar (Coneheads) and forgetting the lame stuff (bad drug humor).

It’s really the only sustained effort to allow fans to get to know the fighters, especially in a serialized form. The format and editing are ridiculous at times, and the cast is usually pretty questionable, but the alternatives are few and far between. The Tapout show was interesting, but it doesn’t look like that is coming back.

Theres a huge billboard for the next season of Tapout right off the 10 freeway in L.A. so if you enjoyed it youre in luck.

Giving Shogun his props. I had the fight 48-47 Machida but Shogun put up a monumental performance and I am honored to have seen it in person.

people are so pessimistic

i’m optimistic. i say it’s a good idea. along with getting a certain amount of money for winning they could add bonuses for knockouts and submissions for the season. i liked the idea when it was country vs country. usa vs canada, usa vs brazil. somebody just has to come up with the right ideas and it works.

i'm all about covering the spread and moneylines. i was building a house, i don't deserve this, deserves have nothing to do with it. bang. "unforgiven"

And I may be showing my Futurama Fanboy colors here, but does “feeder system that feeds itself” make anyone else think of the Slurm Queen sucking syrup out of her own ass?

No?

Who is the Slurms McKenzie of TUF?

Forrest? He loved his public persona until he got Silva’d, now he’s tired and just wants to be left alone…

If you're going strictly TUF...

Forrest is a good choice. I think Chuck fits the bill pretty well for rank and file UFC, since he still has this image as a wild and crazy guy but if you put some bright lights and an HD camera in his grill, shit gets ugly. I’d put money on his eyes being identically bloodshot.

Why doe people think TUF isnt valuable no more? Or that it should go off the air?

Let me ask you this, isnt the show about taking prospects and finding out which one is the best and adding new talent to the UFC?

Now forget coaches fighting, house antics and all that shit, the show is still about getting prospects and adding new talent to the UFC.

Why wouldnt they do it forever? Why would you stop? This is the way you find out about fighters, you see upcoming prospects fight, you see what they are like, you become fans of them.

Just look at the fighters in the UFC right now that came through TUF.

Not even the winners, there are stars and great fighters all over the place, and even recently guys like Shaub, guys like Ross Pearson, Winner, Bader, Efrain etc.

The show still serves a purpose, and if you like mma and like watching and finding new prospects, how can you think the show should go away?

by KRS827 on Jan 24, 2010 4:32 PM EST reply actions

i agree Krs827

i stilll look forward to every season, i cant wait for wed nights. I wish it would go year round . Also maybe they have good years and bad, but i am certain alof of the veiwers are brand new. And it helps the sport grow more and more.

by #1 piggy on Jan 24, 2010 4:35 PM EST up reply actions

It's simple
Now forget coaches fighting, house antics and all that shit, the show is still about getting prospects and adding new talent to the UFC.

You can’t forget the bullshit and antics, because this is what SpikeTV wants. The show has become less about getting new prospects, and more about how stupid these guys can act.

A house + fighters + alcohol =/= them caring about the fights.

Agreed

That’s why guys like Tyrone Woodley get passed up despite now being considered a legitimate prospect while head cases like Junie Browning and his even less talented little brother get to pass through and get numerous breaks for their borderline psychotic behaviour.
