2009 Bloody Elbow Reader Awards: Knockout of the Year

via UFC.com

"You're walking right towards the back hand, mate!  Get off his back hand!  It's absolutely pathetic!"

A fighter may never receive advice as apropos as what Michael Bisping heard in between the first two rounds of his fight with Dan Henderson at UFC 100.  Bisping fought the first round like a NASCAR driver jaunting clockwise around the track.  Whether it was misguided machismo or a five minute brain fart is an exercise in semantics.  Even Andrei Arlovski and Herschel Walker put their Russian Roulette game on hold to comment on Bisping's futility.

The second verse proved same as the first.  Bisping continued circling left, trapping himself General Cornwallis style.  Unfortunately for the Count, Henderson didn't demand a simple exchange of swords as a sign of surrender.  Instead, he followed a leg kick feint with an overhand right.  Whch landed.  Well.

As Bisping's toes curled, Henderson decided Bisping's face was so much fun to punch, he wanted another crack at it.  Bisping would admit in later interviews that podiatrists had to separate his toes from his heels after Dan's infamous Enola Gay show.

Full results after the break.

Mine was Sylvia-Mercer.

There was the knockout itself, and the nervous glance we got from Sylvia for starting a Fedor chant while he was getting into the cage. Also, I don’t know if I was sitting directly behind Tim Sylvia’s parents, or if some other old people got front row seats, seemed bored through all the fights, and then cried after he lost.

Also, MostDiabolicalHater, if you mark that frame an 8, you are entering a world of pain.

I respectfully disagree

While this one has more noteriety, because Bisping was the UFC’s “boy” in the UK they were coddling along since his winning of the Ultimate Fighter. I would say that the Faster, even more dominant, more athletic punch that was laid on UNDEFEATED Demian Maia by Nate Marquardt far out shined this.

by SimplePsych on Jan 24, 2010 12:28 PM EST reply actions

3 things

That one was good, but with TUF season full of hype this is a great payoff.

Plus, Maia said he wasn’t knocked out so i dunno if it counts lol

Also, I think Marquardts Tekken TKO of Gouveia was better than the Maia KO

by IRodC on Jan 24, 2010 12:42 PM EST up reply actions

While I can’t argue with the Hendo/Bisping winning, I’m really surprised there wasn’t more love for Marquardt/Maia. The ONE PUNCH factor, the fact that it was basically the first punch of the fight, the fact that Maia went airborne… that was one hell of a knockout.

by Verklemptomaniac on Jan 24, 2010 1:13 PM EST up reply actions

Sorry

For what it's worth

give credit to Henderson for his amazing footwork in cutting off the cage so that Bisping HAD to circle into Dan’s power. Watch how every time Bisping would try and move to his right, Dan would aggressively cut him off by moving to his own left, meeting him where he was trying to go. It forced Bisping back into his bad habit of circling left.

The second punch is one of the more repugnant acts in recent MMA history. A guy flat out admits he intentionally struck an opponent he knew was out “just to shut him up a little bit” and he gets deified for it. Pretty despicable all round really. If Babalu got cut for holding a choke for 3 seconds too long, “classy” Dan Henderson should have received a lengthy suspension and a fine from the AC.

Also, Brock’s post-fight tirade probably took some of the heat off him

Mark it 8 Dude.

by Earl Montclair on Jan 24, 2010 1:43 PM EST up reply actions

Right.

It may have been a poor show on his part and a tad dishonorable, but the fight wasn’t over yet. There was no ref stoppage, no bell… it was a legal shot. Babalu was holding a choke after a tap, and Rampage was throwing power bombs on a KO’d Wanderlei while the ref was trying to pull him off… those are illegal and should be suspensions. Hendo’s paratrooper forearm drop was a bit of a dick move, but it’s also a dick move to cover your opponent’s mouth when you have top control. Still allowed to do it.

by Day Man on Jan 24, 2010 2:27 PM EST up reply actions

Babs was holding onto that hold as the ref was attempting to pry him off. It was outright rebellion against the ref. I saw that fight and wanted Babalu expelled from the sport and I’m not kidding. You could seriously hurt a guy as the ref is trying to stop it. Dan just slipped in a punch before the ref could get him. It was a shame and I lost a bit of admiration for Dan when he did it. But oh well.

by Dooda on Jan 24, 2010 7:57 PM EST up reply actions

how many times did brock lesnar's fist hit frank mir's face just perfectly in that fight?

it think it was more repugnant of the referee to not call that fight sooner. same with jon jones vs matt hammill. even jones looked at the ref and gave that look :what do you want me to do to this guy before you call the fight..

i'm all about covering the spread and moneylines. i was building a house, i don't deserve this, deserves have nothing to do with it. bang. "unforgiven"

except he was dumb, and then lost due to illegal blows. brock just kept hitting frank’s face with ham hocks

by Austin Martin on Jan 24, 2010 1:51 PM EST up reply actions

The problem was, Hammill was flailing his arms in defense. He wasn’t out and he still looked aware. I don’t think it would’ve taken much more for the ref to stop it though.

by Dooda on Jan 24, 2010 7:59 PM EST up reply actions

Flailing?

He was covering up and still trying to get some hip movement to set up an escape. Hammil was getting beaten like a rented mule, but was intelligently defending until Jones stopped intelligently attacking.

That was this year.

Not that I condone facism or any ism for that matter. Isms are in my opinion, not good. A person shouldn't believe in an ism, he should believe in himself.

I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me". Good point there, after all he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. Wouldn't change the fact I have to bum rides off of people.

Ah. Right. Calendar fail.

Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.

People frown on this for its whole “squash match” feel.

Sarcasm boys

It was a hit at those that actually think that. I could watch MMA 24/7.

This thread should be a must read for anyone that hasn’t been on BE for more than a couple of months. There should be quizzes and there should be a collegiate course based on this thread. Eegads, it’s everything good about MMA and the universe in general.

And

This isn’t even the most outrageous of the recent posts.
