Quote of the Day 2: Kenny Florian Predicted That Diego Sanchez Would Return to 170

"You know, I pretty much predicted that. The skill level at 155lbs is the best in the UFC, if you look across the board, in terms of well-rounded fighters. You are not going to come in to the UFC 155 division and start finishing guys right away. People see me doing it and what do they think I'm doing, just lying around not training? I train my ass off every single day to be able to do that and it's not an easy thing to be able to finish guys at 155. That's something I really pride myself on.

The only guys, I think, at 155 that are consistently finishing people are me and BJ Penn. I think that takes a special skill to be able to do that. Not everybody can do that, I don't promise to be able to do that all the time but that's the way I fight and that's the way I train to fight. Diego thought he was going to be able to go out there and just smash people at 155. Not going to happen, Diego. The skill level is too good out there. You have to be very, very well rounded. He thought what he was able to do at 170, he was going to do even better at 155 and that's just not the case. It just shows me the talent that is out there at 155. In my opinion, Diego just never looked great at 155."

but i think hes right diego never did look that great at 155 i think the cut was too much for him

For telling the truth? Diego did not look good against 2nd tier lightweights and then was massacred by Penn. Kenny on the other hand finished both of those same lightweights with ease and his fight with Penn, while one sided, had a lot to do with trying to utilize a gameplan that worked for GSP because of his size.

I have truly felt for some time that Kenny Florian is the 2nd best lightweight in the world. But I just think he shared his conscious opinion on why he thought Diego went to 155, and with how quick Sanchez was to move back up to 170 I’d say it’s accurate and not being a douche.

The only guys…at 155 that are consistently finishing people are me and BJ Penn.

I think he’s right – and Aoki is probably the only non-Zuffa fighter you can throw in there as well.

And Alvararez, although probably at a lower level of competition.

by Sventsh on Jan 24, 2010 7:23 AM EST up reply actions

yeah I know it was a long time ago and at middleweight, but a good comeback for Diego would be… well…, I finished you didn’t I Kenny?

by kanodogg on Jan 24, 2010 12:07 AM EST via mobile reply actions

And Kenny’s response would be, “Hey, I’m still here, you’re the one leaving MY division.”

by argyle on Jan 24, 2010 4:09 AM EST up reply actions

And Kenny hasn’t bounced through divisions either?

by Hardcase on Jan 24, 2010 9:11 AM EST up reply actions

Not the same

TUF was only accepting MW, so he bulked up. After, he dropped to WW, and once LW opened up, he went there because that was his natural weight all along. He just did what he had to do to get into the UFC.

Exactly, people forget that the first tuf was 185. If you watched it Kenny was a fat shit. Dude was 30 pounds over his natural weight.

Seems pretty similar to me. Kenny moved through divisions when opportunities opened up for him – MW for TUF, WW for subsequent fights, and then to LW so he could get a crack at a belt. Diego has done pretty much the same. Only now Diego has decided to go back to WW. More power to him.

by Hardcase on Jan 24, 2010 1:05 PM EST up reply actions

They both moved around weight classes, but Kenny was never beaten out of one. I think he always intended to drop out of MW, win or lose TUF – the loss to Sanchez in no way influenced that decision. He did well at WW, but LW is an even better fit for him, so he dropped one further when the division was reopened.

The effect is still the same though regardless of the cause – they changed weight divisions. Doesn’t make either guy a greater or lesser fighter, IMO.

by Hardcase on Jan 25, 2010 6:40 AM EST up reply actions

Since it was an 185 pound TUF you had people fighting outside of their natural weight class. And when the UFC restarted the LW division Kenny dropped down cause that’s his natural weight. Diego got beat twice at WW and then dropped. It’s not the same at all.

Diego’s crazy cardio wrestling/BJJ blitz worked great in the WW division but at 155 he was just one of the crowd.

Keep firing Assholes!

Mind numbing, tedious and ultimately self defeating.

Just like Kenny finished Roger Huerta and Din Thomas (freak injury)? Almost no one finishes Clay Guida or Joe Stevenson.

Methinks Kenny’s is talking to get Diego to stay at 155 for a rematch.

Almost noone but Kenny Florian

by bigweeze on Jan 24, 2010 12:35 AM EST up reply actions

and BJ PENN. fact is kenny is BJ’s own personal gatekeeper. If they cant beat kenny they cant beat BJ

My thoughts exactly. This does sound like Kenny trying to bait Diego into a fight though

by dissever on Jan 24, 2010 1:12 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

ww vs lw

fitch should fight kenny to see who the best personal gatekeeper in the ufc really is

by cagefightonacid on Jan 24, 2010 6:52 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Thats why 155 is the most entertaining of all the divisions (for me to watch), has the most well rounded fighters and lots of them.

This is smart smack-talk by Kenny, probably because he has a pretty decent shot at beating Diego.

Catchweight of 163? I’ll watch.

I give Diego about 3 days to respond to this nd it’ll be another “Quote of the day” type response

I really want to see this fight.

They need to do Maynard vs Gomi for the next title shot and kenny vs diego

That's EXACTLY what I was thinking

Florian/ Sanchez rematch would be pretty sick. The only thing is that I think Diego was killing himself trying to get to 155, and I think his power & conditioning suffered as a result. Maybe if they really wanted to do the fight, they’d set it up at a catchweight, maybe like 160ish.
