Chael Sonnen and Ed Soares Trade Barbs

In separate interviews with MMA Weekly, UFC middleweight Chael Sonnen and Ed Soares, who manages several UFC fighters including middleweight champ Anderson Silva, have tossed some harsh words back and forth regarding Silva.

Sonnen:

Chael20sonnen1_medium

"You want me to let you in on a secret, Anderson Silva speaks perfect English. He just has such a low amount of respect for you and all the rest of the media that he pretends he doesn't. I've had conversations with Anderson Silva in perfect English, and on top of that he's so boring to listen to that he and his rocket scientist manager, Ed Soares, who is also about as exciting as watching grass grow, have decided that Ed is better on the mic than Anderson, so just let Ed do the talking."

"It's quite ironic that all the media comes on and talks about how great this guy is for reasons that are completely un-understandable to me. How great Anderson Silva is, and all of us fighters are in the back going, 'jeez, they're out there massaging his ego, Anderson hates them so much, he pretends he can't understand them,’" Sonnen stated.

"That guy's no more the top fighter out there than Bigfoot is roaming the woods," said Sonnen. "That is an absolute myth, and all these guys can buy into it, but there's a young man out in Portland, Ore., that is not signing up on that bandwagon.

"If Anderson ever signed to fight me, which is highly unlikely, he'll be getting a verbal beating like you've never seen. And his language barrier won't be the point of interest."

Soares's response is after the jump...

Star-divide

Soares:

Anderson-silva-ed-soares_medium

"I think Chael's a really super nice guy and every time I've met the guy he's always been really cool to me. That's weird that he would say stuff on the radio, but I think at the end of the day, Chael's not a dumb guy, he's a pretty smart guy," Soares commented. "I think no one will really pay attention to what he has to say unless he probably talks about Anderson."

"Anyone that has a mouth can say what they want," he said. "I don't think people pay too much attention to what Chael does. Saying that Anderson's boring or Anderson's this, Anderson's that, we don't even need to go back and see what Chael has done. If you really want to analyze Chael's career over the past couple years, he's had some wins, but he said he didn't tap against Paulo Filho. If the ref wouldn’t have stopped the fight, Paulo Filho would have his arm in Brazil with him.

"And when he beat Paulo Filho, he was 35 to 40 percent of a Paulo Filho and he took him to a decision. Then he went and fought Damien Maia, got submitted quick, and now he's going to fight Nate Marquardt which Nate just ended up knocking out Damien Maia. I think Chael should be really focused on his fight that he's got against Nate Marquardt because I can tell you right now that's probably going to be the hardest fight of his life. I would put my money on Nate."

Never one to mince words, Sonnen may simply be trying to build some heat, and perhaps he's thinking that if he can start up a little rivalry with the Spider, he might pave his way to a title shot if he can defeat the very dangerous Nate Marquardt at UFC 109.  Of course that's a very big "if", and like Soares, many are betting on Nate to win that fight.  Nonetheless, nothing's ever stopped Sonnen from drawing attention to himself and he sure knows how to sell a fight, even if that means drawing the ire of the fans.

Soares is right

The only way Sonnen could get a headline is to talk trash about Anderson… and Marquardt is going to cruch him!!

so sick of fighters doing this

it’s like when wandy was trying to do the same thing to anderson. they’re afraid they won’t EARN a shot against him, so they try to bait him into GIVING them a shot. it’s pathetic.

and for the record. if anderson does speak perfect english i still wouldn’t care less that he does most of his talking in portugese. he’s brazilian, most people he knows and loves are probably brazilian too. i get really sick of this “anyone not trying to be just like us is disrespecting us.”

had no opinion of sonnen before, but i do now. and oddly enough it has nothing to do with ever wanting to see him fight.

He does have major “go-away heat.” He’s not someone that I would pay to see get his ass kicked. I think that he is a good fighter and one cannot take away his wins against a tough Dan Miller and Yushin Okami, but he constantly sounds delusional in these interviews.

Wow Chael...

I met Anderson Silva three weeks ago. He was totally confounded by the term “It was a pleasure to meet you”. Does Chael believe he puts on this act when Soares isn’t nearby? If that’s the case, then that’s fucking amazing— Andy Kaufman level shit, to be sure. Sonnen better get his fuckin eye on the prize because, while he’s improved drastically since his move over from the WEC (and I find him to be terribly underrated as a fighter), Nate “Tekken” Marquardt ain’t nothin to fuck with. He’s going to have problems chaining together syllables after that fight if he’s looking over Nate’s shoulder at Anderson— a fight which would be the new first worst beating of his life it happened.

Sonnen is probably just playing the heel

If (and its a big if) he gets past Marquardt he pretty much has a fight against Anderson locked (If Anderson beats Vitor then a title shot).

I don’t blame him for making himself hated in order to get a bigger payday.

Keep yapping away Chael.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Sonnen figures that he needs to get his name out there, knowing that the UFC doesn’t give title shots for just winning, due to the lack of official contendership fights. Besides, as a real estate agent when not fighting I would think that he knows the value of talking a good game.

The most interesting part about this is that Soares didn’t deny the part about Anderson being able to speak english because if that’s true then Silva is truly full of crap on multiple levels.

by Raker on Jan 23, 2010 2:57 AM EST reply actions

Cool story. I can corroborate that level of engrish. A lot of these guys speak some English, but aren’t comfortable enough with it that they feel like they’re conveying what they truly mean to say. It doesn’t mean they can’t hold a conversation, but that they would rather have a translator intimate their view in a more succinct manner. Somehow, Chael doesn’t understand that concept. He’s too busy filling his spittoon with Copenhagen and staying out of Lindland’s guard.

Right.

You can talk to most Brazilian fighters in English and they’ll get your general point and know the words to respond, but it doesn’t work with the media. Shogun is just about the top of the list for guys like that, Anderson as well. In fact, Demian Maia is one of the only (current) Brazilian fighters I’ve met that speaks english confidently and conversationally.

He said that he met— may not have met them. All of them that I’ve met get a little shaky with their English. It’s natural to not speak to your ability when you’re anxious about what’s coming next. Hell, I speak fluent Arabic and on my first trip there this Summer after not having been there in many years, I felt like a complete moron for the first week.. Couldn’t put together proper sentences to save my life.

Ah - I missed the "having met" clause.

My second language is French, & I have lots of opportunities to use it here, so it’s been a while since I’ve been hesitant. I don’t blame you for being shaky on Arabic – everything I’ve read & heard about it says it’s vastly different than English. It took forever for me to find a translation of the Qur’an that was considered acceptable.

I learned Arabic as a child (being that both of my parents were from Lebanon), so the integration was much easier. I don’t have many opportunities to use it, however. I felt ashamed that my arabic was so broken when I initially went over there. But after spending over two months there on two different trips, I now speak it better than I ever have. I now know local lingo/slang terms, like how to say “Oh, for sure” in slang, which for them is “100 in 100” (mee-eh be mee-eh— basically how they say 100%). I now try to speak it with my brother (which we have rarely done in the past), out in public and the like. It’s fun to talk about people in their presence. Why I never realized this before is beyond me.

This was a rather gratuitous attempt to brag about hanging with Silva. So you punched him in the chest with a “100% blast” — what was the point of that story? Why did people rec this? You failed to use "Fail" correctly

You just engaged in a second order failure. It happens. (Interestingly if I fail in this post I will have engaged in a rare “meta-failure”.)

Why you "fail"ed — You granted that some of his post could be construed as bragging and thus unnecessary. My claim was that the post was gratuitous. I’d say that you basically support my claim. What happened is that, since you’re (in all likelihood) a true believer in all things that are or are about Anderson Silva, and since my post could be construed to reflect, in some tenuous way, negatively on Anderson Silva, you turned off the critical part of your mind and went with the first insult that popped into your head, resulting in a “fail”.

Good thing you are going along with your profile name and retiring à la Marcus Jones. Good thing you are also both big babies. I wonder if Marcus Jones likes to hate on people who admire others. MMA legends do have a superhero status to them. You “fail” because you can’t make the simple connection that people love hearing about their heroes, and they sure don’t love holier-than-thou philosophers like yourself.

I think that I “succeed” because I can correctly identify seemingly unhealthy hero worship. It’s the sort of thing that causes people to blindly follow dictators, launch inquisitions, blow themselves up, etc. It’s just manifesting itself in a different form here.

I have no doubt that you’re right about not most people’s not liking people like me.

For someone that’s doing as much calculation about reasoning, you seem completely devoid of it.

Let me help you

Your point is that the connection that I’m drawing is unhelpfully tenuous, not that I lack self-awareness. (What could my lacking self-awareness have to do with the accuracy of what I’m saying? Absolutely nothing. That’s why arguments like that are a fallacy (ad hominem).) My point wasn’t about his writing about his encounter with Silva but rather that it is representative of an odd, off-putting hero worship (and also an egregious example of validation seeking behavior — fortunately you were there to help him on that front)). I shouldn’t be surprised but people on this site seemed more intelligent, on the whole, than posters on other sites (which is tantamount to being the best dressed clown in the circus, I suppose) and less likely to be rabidly devoted to a fighter beyond what’s reasonable but that doesn’t seem to be the case with Silva. I find rabid devotion repulsive and in general it should be viewed as a vice as opposed to a virtue. These are the same characteristics you see in religious fanatics, in people who blindly follow demagogues, etc. My point doesn’t seem that ridiculous to me, and if it were ridiculous on its face there’d be no need to comment on it but you did. In any event, I don’t really care to push this point further and I need to work.

On the bright side, fan’s biases are exploitable because they tend to skew betting lines. Silva’s lines haven’t tended to be too crazy however so maybe his rabid devotees aren’t gamblers, which is unfortunate.

by The Darkness on Jan 24, 2010 5:35 PM EST up reply actions

Silva’s lines haven’t tended to be too crazy however so maybe his rabid devotees aren’t gamblers, which is unfortunate.

This may have something to do with Silva not being as worshiped as you think. Seriously, you should try to browse some posts about Silva and try to find those “rabid devotees” you’re talking about. The most common comments about Silva are that he’s ducking opponents, is faking injuries, wants big money, his manager is lying.
If you find rabid devotion repulsive, I expect you to post some of those bitter comments in threads about Fedor, because you wont find more worshiped fighter than him.

That sir is an ad hominen attack and I will not stand for it, but I will post a reply to it: I’m not a hater but I am somewhat baffled by all of the intense devotion that Silva seems to have inspired in the posters on this site. Weird, unflinching, unreflective, uncritical devotion from people that generally seem mildly intelligent (unlike people who post on just about every other MMA related site out there). If the Silva fans (at least the ones who post) were religious I’m guessing they’d be some sort of fundamentalist christians, which is a very bad thing.

Perhaps I’m just jealous that I wasn’t able to punch silva full “blast” or relate a story about my girlfriend giving the “squad massages”. Weird, gratuitous anecdotes that I frankly hated. So I guess I am a hater. You’re right.

by The Darkness on Jan 23, 2010 4:36 PM EST up reply actions

You’re assuming that “ad hominen [sic]” attacks are always irrelevant. When you attacked the initial post and whined about Silva fans, that too, was an ad hominem attack, because you never explained why their character was an issue. In this case, however, you’re doing exactly what you criticized others for, making it hypocritical. My point it out is also not a fallacy because I am saying the issue itself is your hypocrisy, making it relevant.

by Scott C. Broussard on Jan 23, 2010 5:36 PM EST up reply actions

Almost there but not quite

Your “point[sic] it out” is a fallacy since my point is about the character of Silva fans not about my character. If my point hinged on my not being hypocritical then you’d be right, but it didn’t and you’re not. Also I’m not being hypocritical unless you’re claiming that I’m exhibiting unflinching, unreflective, etc. devotion for Silva. Perhaps you mean that I’m being weird since I called some Silva fans weird. OK fair enough. You got me.

I like to look for common ground — You’re right that ad hominem attacks might be warranted (e.g., they’d be relevant at a hearing about a judicial nominee or a witness’s credibility ) in some instances. But you’re otherwise completely wrong.

I give you an A for effort (and for spelling ad hominen correctly [turning red]) but a non-passing grade on the argumentative front. You failed and I’m sure you’ll fail again if you reply but perhaps if you keep at it you’ll at least fail better.

Haha agreed. He always seems to be his own biggest fan. He says so many things that he knows are gonna rub people the wrong way. I’ve cringed listening to some of his quotes in the past for sure, but one thing is for sure; he is always a great interview.

That does it, this guy is my favourite heel in current MMA. I almost want him to win against Marquardt now, just to see what kind of absurd shit talking he comes up with next.

Rashad Evans

usually jokes that Anderson Silva understand and speaks English well. However, I think that a guy that usually nods agreeably and replies with short phrases for the most part does not have a command of the English language.

Often it’s easier to understand a language than speak it. He may know what’s being said, and know what his response should be, but doesn’t know how to articulate it, so he just nods in agreement.

Chael Sonnen cracks me up.

He lays on his heel routine so thick and gets people so riled up it is hilarious.

That said, I don’t think he has enough game to beat Marquardt, much less Silva.

no way

he would not be able to dent anderson that way!

I can’t speak for the other things, but Silva does speak English. I had a conversation with him at a strip club. It wasn’t fluent by any means, but he understood everything I said and was very engaging.

Sonnen also said that he and Maia were #1 and #2 MW’s before their fight…

and Fedor never fought anybody good and sambo is a joke because it’s not a HS sport…

Making up dumb stuff is his bit…

Nate will wreck him.

by iiowyn on Jan 23, 2010 6:32 PM EST up reply actions

haha, Sonnen is hilarious. I love it. He’s definitely trying to position himself for a title shot if he beats Nate. I think I might actually root for him to do it after witnessing one of the best “bad guy” wrestling routine in recent memory.

Once his career starts waning (perhaps after Nate beats him), he should fully embrace the bad guy wrestler persona and insist on only fighting women (a la Andy Kaufman).

Sonnen clearly isn’t a cryptozoology enthusiast, big foot is clearly roaming the woods.

by bigstupidsmile on Jan 23, 2010 4:22 PM EST reply actions

strongly agree!!

Although it is quite possible Chael’s moving up to hw eventually, and trying to hype a fight with Antonio Silva.

Keep firing Assholes!

Mind numbing, tedious and ultimately self defeating.

by Ubernoober on Jan 23, 2010 5:13 PM EST reply actions

I somewhat agree with what Sonnen is saying in the sense that I believe Silva is really a bit of a fraud when it comes to his displays of class and humility. However, I believe the essence of Chael’s statements comes from the fact that one seems have to act like half a pro rassler to separate themselves from their divison rather than just beat the best of his peers. Its no secret the ufc holds back fighters with styles they percieve as boring. I really thought it would be more time before mma adopted this kind of bs. A classic case of “dont hate the player, hate the game”.

by Ozone on Jan 23, 2010 7:29 PM EST reply actions

Everyone always hates on Sonnen…but I really believe he has a shot to win this fight. Chael has only been stopped twice in his career via TKO or KO…once by corner stoppage and the other by a cut…never literally stopped in a fight. I can’t see Nate submitting him…so I ask, how is he going to finish him? Chael is 13-1 in decisions while Nate is 7-5-1…Advantage Chael. Chael will have the advantage when it comes to wrestling…what happens if and when Nate ends up on his back? If Nate wins this fight in impressive fashion…I will never agree more that he’s ready for Anderson. Chael is always hated on, always underestimated, and as of late, has risen to the occasion.

And he’s only talkin the smack to Anderson because if he wins he’d be right in the mix. But, he knows Anderson won’t fight him because there is no PPV buys in it…So Chael does what he has to do…talk Sh*t. Get um’ Chael…I’m heading your fan club bro. Hope ya win.

by Hbkfuel on Jan 24, 2010 9:16 PM EST reply actions

How can you not see Nate submitting him? He’s been submitted a bunch of times. He was submitted by Forrest Griffin.
