2009 Bloody Elbow Reader Awards: Submission of the Year
Toby Imada didn't just pull off a swank submission. When he wrapped Jorge Masvidal in an inverted triangle choke, he gave fans a reason to watch an experimental niche promotion that aired on a niche foreign-language cable network. Only the hardest of the hardcore saw the submission "live" on Bellator's weekly ESPN Deportes show, but Imada's brilliance spread like wildfire through the MMA community by means of new media giant Youtube.
Other challengers popped their heads up, but the specter of Imada acted like a Whac-a-Mole hammer throughout the year. The final voting became a mere formality.
Full results after the break.

That was both an amazing sub as well as an amazing comeback.
The Maia win over Sonnen was also simply incredible too, set up so well.
Anyone who voted against the inverted reverse standing triangle is patently incorrect.

Objectively and demonstrably incorrect.
I can’t believe anything else got a first-place vote.

I’ll only assume those that didn’t give the Imada submission a #1 vote was due to not having seen it. Cause there is no way anything came close to being so amazing. Not only that, Imada was losing the fight if I recall when he suddenly pulled off that surprise sub.

I read this quickly and saw "Toby Imada didn't just pull off a wank submission."

Yeah this had to be the winner
Who nominated Mir/Kongo? Frank Mir and Miguel Torres?

Everytime i see pictures of that, it just looks painful. Usually i dont think of the triangle as something that hurts but it looks like hes going to squeeze Masvidal’s head into exploding.
It does hurt, but not badly and never for long. By the time the choke is taking effect, you’re going in and out of consciousness anyway.
I’ve been triangled enough times by Ryan Hall to get a good feel for how well the choke works.

This.
Getting blood choked in general is a weird feeling, it’s far less painful than an pressure choke on an airway, but it’s definitely uncomfortable and your body goes into emergency mode.
Everyone needs to be put in a blood choke at least once in their life.

Remember the first time it happened to me...
My body could not understand what was going on and I felt like the strange discomfort was something I could handle and fight through without an issue. Just felt a little light, was seeing a black spot that started growing, heard my heartbeat in my ears, then woke up with three people standing above me going “You good?” before I had a chance to panic. It’s difficult to understand the first time and it often is a conscious consideration later on, which I love to take advantage of. People fighting a blood choke and looking for escapes get sent into panic/tap mode if you talk to them. Whispering “Shhh shhhh… it will all be over soon…” or “There will be no dreams…” work really well on beginners and recent wrestling converts.

Haha, I get the black spot thing too, it’s literally like I’m going into a tunnel. That’s when I know I need to tap, generally I’ll wait for the tunnel to appear before I stop trying to defend and just tap.

You are a smarter man than I.
I always have a voice in my head telling me “Nah dude, you’re right there, just a little more and you’re out!” I usually wait until I hear my heartbeat before I get ready to tap. It’s a bad strategy, especially since I’m not very good and am in bad positions a lot!

But the plus side to your strategy is that you get to wake up feeling nice and refreshed all the time. In training though… maybe let your brain have a rest and just tap a sec earlier!

I know, man...
Intellectually, I know when to tap. I’m just too dumb and stubborn. Obviously I don’t go out constantly or anything, but more frequently than most. It’s a problem.

theoretically, a perfect triangle doesnt hurt. you definitely feel the pressure building up and combined with the not breathing thing absolutely sucks. but, if its not perfect a lot of times it can be a jaw crush/neck crank as well. The only time i’ve ever gotten completely choked out i was drilling a triangle combination with a partner and it didnt hurt at all

The Imada sub
is definitely a sick submission and deserves the award no doubt. But Maia’s sub on Sonnen is execution at its finest.

What I loved about the Maia sub was...
that it was amazingly clear that he was thinking 3 or 4 steps ahead of Sonnen. Brilliant.
Now he just needs to work on his 1-Punch-KTFO defense.
Maia's is a perfectly good second place.
But I don’t know how anybody could have thought it was better than Imada.

Simple vs. fancy jiujitsu.
If you like the purist Gracie style, then Demian wins. If you like things like Aoki or Hazelett, Imada is the obvious win. Both were brilliant in their own right.

it was crazy when i saw it the first time … in replays it’s like a fine wine: just keeps getting better.
if nobody comes close to something like this in 2010, i say we just give Imada the award again. so awesome it deserves submission of the decade, IMO.
We already have a worthy candidate for 2010: Cole Miller’s Inverted Triangle/armbar (americana?) against Dan Lauzon.

Great choke.

What makes this sub totally ninja
is Imada was having his ass handed to him throughout the fight before he clamped this bad boy on. He looked all Rocky n’shit after the win.
