UFC 112 Expected to Be the First Outdoor UFC Event

According to f4wonline.com:
"We're going to have a big press conference in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday (Jan. 27th), with our new partners from the region, Flash," said Marshall Zelaznik, UFC's managing director of international expansion.
"(Zuffa CEO) Lorenzo and myself will be there with some of the biggest names on the UFC roster. I don't want to give away the official announcement, but this will be a very unique show and not just because the card itself will be as good as any in UFC history."
The show is expected to be the first outdoor UFC event in history.
UFC 112 now includes:
- Anderson Silva vs. Vitor Belfort
- BJ Penn vs. Frankie Edgar
- Matt Hughes vs. Renzo Gracie
- Mark Munoz vs. Kendall Grove
- Rafael Dos Anjos vs. Terry Etim

Awesome! Now Frankie Edgar will get an uppercut from Penn that will cleanly send him to the Persian Gulf.

Should have sold 15%, maybe then the stadium would have had a roof.

I’m gonna go ahead and assume that anything they announce on Wednesday is intended as a birthday gift specifically for me.

I thought that they were trying to avoid an outdoor show
due to the extreme heat. Although considering the ridiculousness of Abu Dhabi, they can probably air-condition the outdoors there.

Also, according to mmalogic’s cryptic hints this show will be on free tv:
Except that the fights you listed, with the exception of Kimnbo – Silva/Belfort, Penn/Edgar, Rua/Machida, Evans/Rampage – have already been booked on ppv card . They’re going to pull those fights off those cards?
- nottheface aka sexiest man on BE
why are you assuming every show is a ppv? giggles feverishly
-mmalogic aka MMASuPreMaCy
So the UAE show is going to be free?
-nottheface
Pretty accurate descriptions IMHO..

2 outdoor stadiums are available
Sheikh Zayed Stadium and Sheikh Bin Zay Stadium both seat around 60,000. I don’t know how popular UFC is in the region. That seems like a lot of seats to sell (or comp)..
I don't think they have to worry about selling tickets.
Remember, the UFC is co-promoting this event with billionaires.

I guess you’re not familliar with bowe Holyfield 2, for one of many examples of successful boxing matches outside. If it’s at night you can’t even tell it’s outside.

they also did it with WM 24
Tickets for the event commenced sale to the public on November 3, 2007.5 WWE and the City of Orlando hosted festivities that spanned a five-day period within the central Florida region.6 For the second consecutive year, WrestleMania broke the record for the highest-grossing pay-per-view in WWE history, as well as for the Citrus Bowl, grossing US$5.85 million in ticket sales. According to a study by Enigma Research Corporation of Toronto, the Citrus Bowl’s record-breaking attendance pumped an estimated $51.5 million – surpassing the projected $25 million – into the local economy and generated $1.8 million in local tax revenue.7 The Central Florida Sports Commission reported that the event created jobs and brought approximately 60,000 visitors to the city.8 Over one million people ordered the event on pay-per-view, grossing $23.8 million in revenue.9

does fighting outside compared to inside affect stamina? Last i checked its dry as shit out there
1/20/2010- Has been declared BROCK IS BACK BITCHES day B.I.B.B. for short. Im working on making it a national holiday
They have soo much money
they bought sun shine 85 degrees and 45% humidity.
Depends – BodogFight had events in Costa Rica outdoors – fighters were completely gassed after the first round, so they didn’t have the energy to finish the fights. Painful to watch. I’m hoping they don’t have that problem here since it’s much a drier climate.

Survivor’s Mark Burnett invests in King of the Cage, secures deal with HDNet for 2010
FiveOuncesofPain.com has recently been able to learn from sources close to the situation that reality television kingpin, Mark Burnett, has invested in King of the Cage, and through this recent founded partnership the company has managed to secure a broadcast deal with HDNet Fights for the year of 2010.
Sources close to the agreement have indicated to 5 Oz. that the promotion’s founder and current majority owner, Terry Trebilcock, still has a controlling interest in the company.
FiveOuncesofPain.com has also been able to learn that the debut of King the Cage on HDNet in 2010 will kick off with a show targeted for March 26 from Reno, Nevada… (Five Ounces of Pain)

will they televise that on HDNet also?

Maybe..
The PI show is scheduled for April and they start airing events on March. SO, I think there is a good chance.

The last time I watched an outdoor fight I believe it was BodogFights Costa Rica.
It was a mixed event, some great fights, some really bad ones. Prangley, Alvarez and the prestigious Roy Nelson were all on the card.
But I remember a fight between two women, which was actually going fairly well in terms of pace and skill and then Rosi Sexton kind of rolled Windy Tomomi backwards and her ankle was caught and it just broke her whole ankle, it looked very disturbing.
It was one of the first times I’ve absolutely cringed watching a MMA event.
So this barely related story is my last recollection of an outdoor event in MMA overall it added a decent atmosphere, but your production, music, entrances will all have to be improvised rather quickly given the difference in the arena scenarios, the outdoor event for Bodog felt too casual for a fight and the audience seemed almost disengaged from the tension in the ring.
Likely it will only be likely a crowd of 8000-11000 people that will be “sampling” the sport for the region, so I’d imagine the UFC might be willing to “co-promote” on the production and perhaps even let Flash create their own original production and introductions and have their own announcers to do the show for the Middle East/Asian territories.
The UFC has to give a little in this situation to expand, I think 112 will be a test and an experiment at large and they will be willing to try new things to substantiate their need for continued growth. And it will be very exciting to see what steps the UFC is prepared to make to bolster their claim of becoming the “most popular sport in the world.”
I just don't see it as being viable for Flash Entertainment
to get anything other than a co-credit with Zuffa at the end of the show, and I even have a hard time imagining that.
There is no such thing as innocence, only degrees of guilt.
Sorry UFC

I wonder if Abu Dhabi is extremely hot, dry, and bright (or freezing, dry, and pitch black so there’s big ass floodlights at night). Ah never mind, probably shouldn’t affect a fighters performance right?

What happens if there’s a bedouin attack mid-event? Or worse yet, the Tusken Raiders? Sure they’re easily startled, but they’ll soon be back, and in greater numbers.
