Phew!…? It makes more sense than Ambriz, I see it playing out similar too Sims/Wren from TUF.

by CSKit

Will Bobby Lashley reach Justin Wren status?!?!?!?!
Any time to get this finalized would be nice.

by Ubernoober

I guess we get to see how he would have done on TUF.

Sims via personality.

Great fight!

Lets see Lashley try to figure out how to beat Sims who has a impregnable takedown defense!

If botter said it I’m sure it’s being discussed but nothing is for sure with Strikeforce until all the t’s are crossed and lower case j’s dotted.

Yea, I can think a lot of adjectives to describe this news and “fantastic” isn’t one of them.

Maybe he is a sarcastic fellow?

Fantastic news to me would be “hey guys, we are going to try to treat our athletes like professionals and do our match making earlier than 2 weeks before the event.”

by DirtyML on Jan 20, 2010 9:15 PM EST up reply actions

Except that didn’t come off as “sarcastic” at all because… we’re on the INTERNET and it’s 140 characters. In all honesty, I took it as a shot at the match-up… but that’s from years of sparring with idiots to get that kind of keen sense.

Brother, it’s WES SIMS. Any sentence that uses “Wes Sims” and “fantastic” is going to be comedy-related in some fashion.

LoL

Maybe the roles should be reversed. Sims via pro wrestling, Lashley via MMA. One has personality, the other has the personality of a wet towel

I hope Sims has worked on his “flopping like a fish and pass out” routine, if Lashley were to get him in a choke hold.. it didn’t look too crisp in TUF10.

Wes Sims

The only man to defeat Frank Mir on two seperate occasions.

by ufc4 on Jan 20, 2010 8:40 PM EST via mobile reply actions

I now you're being facetious, but

Those two fights are what has always kept me from considering Frank Mir an elite fighter.

by John Nash on Jan 20, 2010 8:49 PM EST up reply actions

Sims said it on one of the TUF episodes.

by ufc4 on Jan 20, 2010 8:51 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

LOL, with the exception of about three episodes you should have skipped the fights too.

by ufc4 on Jan 20, 2010 9:01 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

You do realize Wes was lying when he said that right? Mir won both fights, in the second fight Mir knocked him out.

by who me on Jan 20, 2010 8:54 PM EST up reply actions

I know, he and I were both joking.

by ufc4 on Jan 20, 2010 8:59 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I was trying to figure out how the fights with Wes Sims kept someone from considering Frank Mir an elite fighter, that was directed at the other guy.

by who me on Jan 20, 2010 9:07 PM EST up reply actions

Have you seen those fights?

by John Nash on Jan 20, 2010 9:11 PM EST up reply actions

Yes I have, Mir was killing Sims on the ground the first fight before Sims blatantly cheated and Mir knocked Sims out in the second even though Sims strength was supposed to be his striking. Considering Mir had only been fighting MMA for two years at that point I didn’t see anything in any fight that made him look that bad.

by who me on Jan 20, 2010 9:18 PM EST up reply actions

yeah, i was blazed out of my mind and sims/mir II came on unleashed. i owe my mma fandom to that fight.

We're just a million little gods causin' rain storms, turning every good thing to rust.

by Anthony Pace on Jan 20, 2010 10:13 PM EST up reply actions

Mir beat on Sims to the point that he wore himself out by the end, he killed the guy and the only real issue for Mir was that he didn’t finish him earlier.

Their first fight was even more lopsided, Sims only real offense the entire fight was the illegal stomps that got him DQ’d.

by who me on Jan 20, 2010 10:18 PM EST up reply actions

That was one of the ugliest, sloppiest fights to ever grace the Octagon. It looked like the scene from They Live.
I had just watched a bunch of Cro Cop fights (Big Nog, Barnett, and Aleks Emelianenko I think) then I saw Mir/Simms. Unfortunately for Mir, whenever I see him I think of those fights. It’s like seeing a hot chick fuck Ron Jeremy, she’s ruined for life.

by John Nash on Jan 20, 2010 10:22 PM EST up reply actions

It was only sloppy for the last minute of the fight and then it ended in a huge knock out, the entire first round of the fight Mir worked him over so bad Sims had trouble getting back to his corner. Perhaps you need to go back and watch it again. Hell both Mir and Sims had only been fighting two years at that point, it shouldn’t be compared to highlight reel Cro Cop fights (some of which were such mismatches it was hard for him not to look great).

by who me on Jan 20, 2010 10:28 PM EST up reply actions

I should note that Big Nog, Barnett and Aleks isn’t the mismatches I’m talking about but if you look at Cro Cop’s Pride fights about half of them were real head scratchers.

by who me on Jan 20, 2010 10:32 PM EST up reply actions

I never said Mir isn’t good, I said because of that fight I havea hard time accepting him as an elite fighter. They memory lingers with me, but I’ll suck it up and watch those fights again one of these days,

by John Nash on Jan 20, 2010 10:32 PM EST up reply actions

You don’t have to be apologetic for not thinking Mir is an elite fighter. He’s not.

by scrambledeggs on Jan 20, 2010 11:28 PM EST up reply actions

how many other two-time champs can you say that about?

According to half the BE members Tim Sylvia is a can.

by John Nash on Jan 21, 2010 1:04 PM EST up reply actions

just rewatched both fights

1st fight:
Mir clean takedown, half guard, mount. punches from mount, head and arm choke attempt, Sims rolls over, rear naked attempt, Sims rolls to back. Mir rolls for armbar, fails, Sims stands up, stomps, fight over.

Pretty clean fight for Mir other than not ending it from mount.

2nd fight:
Round 1:
Mir clean takedown, side control, mount. punches, failed sub attempt, back to side control for Mir. Mount again. Sims gives up back. Mir flattens out and goes for punches. Sims rolls onto his back again. Mir goes for head and arm choke. Sims survives and gives Mir “the bird”. Mir is exhausted, controls from mount for remainder of round.
Round 2:
Mir goes for awkward kick, falls down, gets up, takes down Sims easily. Sims pulls guard. fight stalls, Big John stands them up. Mir failed takedown attempt. Clinch, things getting awkward here, Mir exhausted. Mir holds lame single attempt, goes to his knees. Sims elbows from top, literally goes for double axe handle from top here, (wow this is getting ugly). Mir gets takedown, Sims pulls guard. Lay and Pray. Big John stands them up. Mir lands 2 strong knees with plum, then 2 big punches, TKO stoppage.

In summary. Mir looked good in Fight 1, looked bad in Fight 2, especially in Round 2.

real question

but the UFC never have to find a replacement the week before the show?

by DrTopo on Jan 20, 2010 9:36 PM EST up reply actions

Has the UFC ever had a fight rejected because it wasn’t competitive two weeks out and then tried and failed to push Jimmy Ambritz on people and then though Wes Sims was a “fantastic” idea? This is way beyond just having some last minute problems with a card.

by who me on Jan 20, 2010 9:48 PM EST up reply actions

Alright, lets step back a minute.

This scenario ridiculous. Totally out of hand, and never should have happened. But it’s only one fight on the card. Diaz-Zaromskis, Cyborg-Coenen, and Lawler-Manhoef are all sick, competitive fights that were made in advance of the two weeks notice thing.

And lets remember that they couldn’t find a good replacement for Lawler’s opponent on the last card on short notice after a last minute injury. They put him on the next (this) card with an awesome fight.

The Lashley situation is totally effed up. But it’s ONE fight. Let’s not act like the whole card is fucked.

"Someone is WRONG on the internet. What do you want me to do? LEAVE? Then they'll keep being wrong!"
-Randall Munroe

by pdl on Jan 20, 2010 9:54 PM EST up reply actions

Even if the UFC didn’t exist this would still be crap booking, there’s no reason to even bring the UFC into it from either side. Heck it wasn’t even the only fight that they were dreadfully late announcing an opponent for(Walker’s opponent wasn’t set until Jan 8). Sometimes bad things happen to a card and people get injured but there isn’t an injury problem here it’s just that they can’t find an opponent that doesn’t get laughed at. You got to really work at this kind of mess and it just takes one dumb ass move like this to overshadow your entire event no matter how good the rest of it may be.

by who me on Jan 20, 2010 10:10 PM EST up reply actions

I said nothing about the UFC… you did. Their existence has nothing to do with anything.

There is a problem with ONE fight on a five fight card. The lowest billed fight on the card. It’s a hugely public clusterfuck of promotional fail (for this one fight), no matter who is to blame for it. You said there are problems with the card… but there aren’t. They could drop this fight, bump up Heiron vs. Riggs, and then have an awesome night of four competitive fights and one publicity stunt. The card is not in trouble at all, and it’s not losing either of the two title fights or the insanely compelling technical brawl. Lashley is not a proven draw, and they haven’t sunk any money into promoting him yet. There’s no huge loss if the fight does not happen.

Strikeforce is not in trouble because of this fight. It is just indicative of problems they need to fix in the future. Stop being so alarmist.

by pdl on Jan 21, 2010 11:35 AM EST up reply actions

The guy I was replying to brought the UFC up not me. Where did I say there were problems with the card, I was pointing out that this one problem overshadows the rest of the card, look how much talk there is on the internet about this and how little buzz there is around the rest of it. Strikeforce isn’t in trouble (and when have I claimed that?) but this one fight is screwing up the whole cards promotion, not to mention the Walker fight which is a complete joke.

by who me on Jan 21, 2010 7:46 PM EST up reply actions

Sure they do

because of injuries and medical issues, not because of Athletic Commissions rejecting the cans they tried to serve on a silver platter to some fighter they’re trying to hype.

by Scott Haber on Jan 20, 2010 9:50 PM EST up reply actions

The first one that comes to mind for me was Tim Boetsch coming in on a weeks notice to fight David Heath, which was just epic.

by brad23 on Jan 20, 2010 10:22 PM EST up reply actions

This is about as close to fight fixing as you can get without actually fight fixing… the other popular method is fucking with the weights and getting guys to cut more than expected to engineer the outcome.

Having a guy you want to promote prepped and ready and then giving his opponent a week notice is common practice in your local bar circuit… but clearly “Strikeforce is in another league”.

And to top it off they are main carding this and the Hershal walker shenanigans over an actual fight… a fight that determines their next challenger for their title.

This is about as stupid as you can get. This is a local show currently being televised nationally.

Wes is a super nice guy and he could do something in MMA……if only he trained with people that could actually teach him a thing or two. Although I must say I don’t really think he is all there: After he had his arm broken (from sparring Loveless in Houston) and had rods put in he actually though he would be a better MMA fighter.

And like I said SUPER NICE guy. He was kind enough to come meet my underage ass outside the Ritz in Houston.
