UFC on Versus Preview: Jon Jones Plans to Be Faster and Smarter Than Brandon Vera

via sherdog.com

Jon Jones (10-1) talked about his upcoming match against Brandon Vera (11-4) in an interview with macsmma:

I'm just going to go out there and bite him on the neck, to see if I can get him to bleed. [Laughs] Nah, I'm joking... It's going to be a good fight... I'm just planning to be the better fighter than him.

Everyone says he's more technical than me. I'm just planning to be the smarter fighter. It doesn't matter who's more technical, it's who fights better that night. I'm going to be faster, smarter, overwhelming.. Just all over him. I feel really good, really confident. I've never taken a fight that I thought I was going to lose, so I feel good.

This is a very intriguing match up. While both guys choose to use their tools a bit differently, they are both essentially reaching in a similar toolbox, with both having similar backgrounds, skill sets, and even career paths when they first stormed in the UFC. It would be interesting to see if this would be Bones' coming out party, or if Vera uses his experience to draw out the line between prospect and contender.

Jon Jones looks to be the faster and more unpredictable fighter, but his downfall, as shown in his last fight, could be his inexperience. Betting lines are still favoring the 22-year-old fighter though, as he is at -250 while Vera is at +210.

Video on the extended entry.

I’ll definitely be rooting for Bones, but I’m worried he’s in a bit over his head with an experienced guy like Vera.

vera at +210 is almost a joke. he’s a notch above in every bones does, except bones is “explosive”

sounds similar to comments made before jones/hamill

not really what i was saying

by GregS123 on Jan 19, 2010 10:56 AM EST up reply actions

exactly… jones is younger, probably quicker, and very creative, but that doesn’t change the fact that Vera is a brown belt, sub-olympic level greco wrestler who gave couture fits, who has technically sound muay thai. I’m sensing a bump in Jones’ progression. And i’m not necessarily saying Bones won’t win, because he was very impressive against hamill, but to have Vera at 210 is almost a little insulting if i were Vera.

by Austin Martin on Jan 19, 2010 10:58 AM EST up reply actions

It may be insulting, but Jones presents vast problems.

Heck, even Keith Jardine took Vera down in their fight, and used unpredictable striking to avoid getting hurt and win a decision. Jones brings all that with better wrestling, more athleticism, and a longer reach.

by Hardcharger on Jan 19, 2010 1:00 PM EST up reply actions

“While both guys choose to use their tools a bit differently”

You mean like how Bones will use them at any time in any situation while Vera chooses to not use them at all?

I think Jones will come out looking to beat Vera up and Vera will come out looking to be technical. In the end I think the young hungry aggressive and confindent Jones takes Vera down hard. This will not end well for Vera

by nsiegel on Jan 19, 2010 10:50 AM EST up reply actions

Yup

^ This. Non-trigger-pulling Vera is going to get beat down.

when was the last time vera got beat down? seriously I would have to look up on fight finder when/IF vera has actually gotten beat down. has he? and didnt he also come into the UFC un defeated and at heavyweight?

by waldog on Jan 19, 2010 11:47 AM EST up reply actions

This is a big step up in competition for jones, but I think he will still handle Vera quite easily.

I thought Matt Hamill was going to be Jones’ toughest test but I’m sure Brandon Vera will be a serious test for him.

by VeeisAnimated on Jan 19, 2010 11:01 AM EST reply actions

Hamill could’ve been his toughest test, but unfortunately he broke down to bits after that trip…

by dancingChicken on Jan 19, 2010 11:04 AM EST up reply actions

Vera is getting merc'ed.

I like how some people are pointing at the Hamil fight as a sign of weakness. He “lost” because he fucked up a guy too brutally.

by SidHartman on Jan 19, 2010 11:02 AM EST reply actions

not weakness..

just that we has fans, and jones as a fighter knows he isnt going to break a shoulder every trip.

its not a conspiracy theory. its just saying that IF hamill didnt break his shoulder. Being a seasoned fighter, I would expect him to get back to his feet at some point. and with 2 more rounds the fight could have played out quite differnt. so its not really sayign that hamill was going to win.. but that we really didnt get a lot out of the fight to analyze..

by waldog on Jan 19, 2010 11:52 AM EST up reply actions

He completely dominated a guy a lot of people had him losing to both on the feet and on the ground, what more do you need to know? Bones barely got touched while completely imposing his will on Hamill.

by ufc4 on Jan 19, 2010 12:11 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

To be fair...

the “completely dominated” part of the fight happened after the trip & shoulder injury…up till that point the fight was far less than dominated by Bones.

by Razreshat on Jan 19, 2010 12:19 PM EST up reply actions

Up til the incredibly dominant throw on a great wrestler, in Rd 1, Jones hadn’t dominated that much? I guess so.

by Hardcharger on Jan 19, 2010 1:02 PM EST up reply actions

That throw was awesome...

and I think he went to it because the stand up fight wasn’t going exactly as planned.

Not terribly, but I think Hamil was alot more effective than anyone, including Jones, thought he would be.

by Razreshat on Jan 19, 2010 1:21 PM EST up reply actions

The most interesting thing to me

is how the Greco will play out between these two.

by Chris Barton on Jan 19, 2010 11:20 AM EST reply actions

i doubt it would that much..

I have a feeling they’re going to stand until Bones drops, or Vera loses a decision. (the only two likely outcomes I think)

by Anton Tabuena on Jan 19, 2010 11:38 AM EST up reply actions

Or Vera gets KTFO’d.

by ufc4 on Jan 19, 2010 11:40 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

has Jones “KTFOed” anyone in the UFC? ..has Vera been even close to being KOed?

This ends by decision, or a Jon Jones TKO loss.

by Anton Tabuena on Jan 19, 2010 11:57 AM EST up reply actions

And Vera’s only TKO in the last three years is Mike effing Patt, let’s not pretend like he’s some kind of feared striker. He can hit hard but he doesn’t give you any reason to worry about him actually doing it. Ask Matt Hamill how much Jones’ striking has improved.

by ufc4 on Jan 19, 2010 12:04 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

No doubt he has improved his striking... but that wasn't my point.

All I’m saying is that Bones doesn’t KTFO people and Vera doesn’t get KOed… the likely scenario is they stand until they reach a decision, or if Bones gets stopped..

we know Vera can take a shot, but we can’t say that about Bones, hence, why I said the likely outcome is either a decision towards either guy, or a Bones TKO loss.. I’m not hating on your boy, so don’t be all defensive already. haha. :)

by Anton Tabuena on Jan 19, 2010 12:09 PM EST up reply actions

I know I’m just saying I don’t agree that the only way Jones can win is a decision.

by ufc4 on Jan 19, 2010 12:15 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I think it’s not the only way he could win, but in my opinion, if he wins, that’s the likely outcome.

by Anton Tabuena on Jan 19, 2010 12:22 PM EST up reply actions

You mean when he wins? :)

by ufc4 on Jan 19, 2010 12:28 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Wow that line is a joke.

I think vera winning is a much better chance. 2 reasons. bones looked good last fight but he did gnp a fighter with a brokenn shoulder. I dont see him breaking a shoulder every throw. fluke like w to me.. means nothing.

next Vera’s only prblem is he hasnt finished anyone in a hand ful of fights.. other than that.. HOF coutures best Greco couldnt take him down and keep him there, and anyone on there feet including machida and shogun.. better be afraid of HIS quickness.

i think I would actually bet on this fight.

Yeah, because Jones wasn’t tooling Hamill on the feet before he broke his shoulder.

by ufc4 on Jan 19, 2010 11:57 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Not really (assuming you are being sarcastic).

The stand up far from being dominated by either fighter. I seem to remember being suprised by Hamil’s ability to land given Jones’ reach advantage.

well we shall see after the bones fight wont we :D

by waldog on Jan 19, 2010 11:53 AM EST reply actions

What is funny tho

is that when Jones had Hamil mounted he couldnt KO him, and almost looked like he ran out of ideas to finish him off. Boes did dominate Hamil for sure, but he couldnt put him away and was even looking for the ref to stop the fight even tho Hamil was still protecting him self. That there makes me doubt Bones Jones.

Not many people get KO'd from mount

usually they get beaten down like Hammill until the ref stops it.

by Well Read Idiot on Jan 19, 2010 12:39 PM EST up reply actions

you're right,

but to be fair, Before the illegal blows, Bones was trying to con the ref into stopping the fight… and that’s also a testament to Hamill’s toughness who was still defending himself even with the shoulder injury.

by Anton Tabuena on Jan 19, 2010 12:43 PM EST up reply actions

i think he was more worried that Hammil was taking unnecessary damage and wondering when would the ref stop it. then pretty much “snapped”, then landed the illegal elbows.

i dont think Jones will have mercy on his next opponents.

I think so too.

I just hope he doesn’t be the champ now. haha…

but damn, he’s this good now.. imagine him 6-8 years from now on his athletic prime. Scary.

by Anton Tabuena on Jan 19, 2010 12:14 PM EST up reply actions

Definitely.

I don’t doubt that Jones isn’t a future force in the LHW division. The guy seems to have some natural ability in the fight game and the kind of creativity that is going to give more structured fighters fits. I think he has some issues to overcome, but training with a good camp will solve that in no time.

by Razreshat on Jan 19, 2010 12:29 PM EST up reply actions

Dear Anton:

Why the hell are you the only person thinking Vera has a good shot at winning this? I’m totally with you. Vera has fantastic wrestling, particularly his defense. His jiujitsu is solid, and his ability to get off the mat is second much only to prime Chuck. And if Bones can’t get this to the mat, I think his wildness and inexperience striking will be his undoing. Yeah, Anderson Silva makes things like the back elbow thing from Ong Bak, capoeira movement to a flurry, leg punches, and that weird skipping behind the back wrap around kick work, but that’s because his experience and fundamentals are outstanding and always there to keep people off guard. Jones doesn’t have those tools yet. He doens’t have the head movement to avoid getting tagged. He’s never fought somebody who can comfortably switch their stances in the middle of an exchange. He’s never had to defend against heavy leg kicks, and Vera probably has the nastiest low kicks at LHW after Shogun. Off the top of my head, I don’t think we’ve really seen his chin tested. His attitude is great and upbeat but we don’t know if that will hold when he faced adversity in the ring. He might be easily frustrated, we don’t know. I love watching him develop and think he’s one of the most entertaining prospects in MMA right now, but I’m not sold on the hype yet.

pdl prediction: Vera staying back and having a boring feel out process for a round while gradually chopping away at his legs. In round 2, Jones gets frustrated and presses forward too much and Vera circles out working the jab from a southpaw stance and cutting out his legs some more. Round 3, we see how Bones has improved his gas tank since his debut. Vera gets more aggressive late, but is unable to finish. The Truth by UD.

Jones has looked impressive as of late, but you are right. Outside of Jones hitting some spinning roundhouse or spinning back elbow, I really don’t see Jones winning the standup. Jones has been working a jab lately, but Vera has been using jabs and leg kicks for years (among other strikes). It’s the difference from someone who has solid fundamentals (Vera) and someone who doesn’t (Jones). Don’t get me wrong though because I am a fan of both, and Jones is capable of winning, but I really do feel that many MMA fans are underestimating Vera here.

by chrisbboy82 on Jan 19, 2010 1:27 PM EST up reply actions

So you are predicting that Vera will take one of the most exciting and creative fighters in MMA and turn the fight into a boring decision? Sounds about right actually.
