Royler Gracie weighs in the black belt that Rolles gave to Rashad

Q:Rolles [Gracie] recently gave a black belt to Rashad Evans. He received the black belt in gi-less Jiu-Jisu even though he has never trained in the gi. What are your thoughts on that graduation?

A:Everyone has their own criteria for giving out belts, who am I to criticize someone who is giving out belts? My principles are that the person needs to have a knowledge of self defense, a basic knowledge of Jiu-Jitsu, of the ground, know how to apply a submission with the gi, pass the guard... It doesn’t matter if the guy is tough, because a guy who is only tough does not represent the "finesse" of Jiu-Jitsu. Not that he doesn’t have the conditions to use it, he has the conditions to use a belt. Rashad is the type of guy that can use any belt, he is a "native" tough guy, he trains but he trains without the gi… Who am I to take his belt away? Rolles is the one that gave it to him, I’d endorse it but if he came to my academy he’d need to train with the gi. But I do not challenge [the decision], I am far from challenging that.

Seems like Rashad is getting alot of critisism about recieving his black belt from Rolles.BJJ guys look down upon no-gi it seems.

I think most of the criticism is coming from the media and the MMA community and not from BJJ people, they all seem to support Rolles decision.

Essentially what Rolles should of called this was “an honorary black belt” just like an “honorary doctorate”.

Kind of what i thought, most BJJ guys i talk to consider nogi almost like “catch wrestling”

by bigc4277 on Jan 19, 2010 10:21 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah pretty much, I wouldn’t say catch wrestling because the rules are so different, but it’s definitely considered different.

Every comp you go to in jiu jitsu you sign up for your weight class/skill level/age etc etc in two categories, in Gi and No Gi (if you’re doing both) so they’re kept separate from eachother a lot and both are just so different in how they play out that they’re just considered two different types of grappling but under the jiu jitsu banner (mostly because of the rules). It’s kinda hard to explain, but if you train jiu jitsu it’s just kinda something you come to accept and understand in that way.

agreed with all your points

except about Renzo, his interview didn’t seem to be knocking down on Rashad, it sounded like his only criticism is to differentiate both gi and gi-less (or submission grapling).

Can I say that Rashad has worked his way up in the correct belt order with a gi? Of course not and I don’t think as a pro fighter he will be doing gi tournaments anytime soon. I differentiate between gi and gi-less and apparently Rolles found him ready for the belt in gi-less..

but besides that, I didn’t see that much of a criticism due to the black belt he received.

Ah you’re correct, I think I was just remembering the Renzo interview differently, all I hear about him nowadays is fighting with Rorion and Rener and all of the G.Uni people so I guess I just associate him with a little more aggressive tone.

Royler thinks Rashad’s belt is bullshit. It’s obvious.

And to be perfectly honest, there is no way Rashad is a black belt. He’d get tore up in competitions by high level brown belts probably.

Or Rashad would wrestle them and just win on points.

If Rashad got a takedown (entirely possible) then that’s 2 points, if he can avoid sweeps or submissions after that… he wins. (Wrestlers actually get a lot of medals in no-gi and in beginner gi tournaments just because they get those 2 points and then play defense the rest of the time).

Rashad wouldn’t outwrestle a lot of black belts at ADCC or the Mundials. Especially guys like Marcello or Garcia. Hell, I’d love to see him against even Xande or Galvao, and try to defensively wrestle his way to a points victory.

Truth.

Plus, has Rashad even competed in grappling tournies? Does he ever plan on doing so? The belt award is a slap in the face to other guys in the gym.

At least Josh Barnett has proven his sub grappling skills and makes use of the black belt he was awarded?

by MMAEruption on Jan 19, 2010 1:57 PM EST up reply actions

Josh is a different situation, he has competed in the gi and in no gi in actual tournaments, and in fact many people think he beat Romulo Barral in that most recent gi match they had.

The criticism

I’ve attendend some discussions about Rashad’s black belt and the practcioners are upset on Rolles decision saying kind of "what am I going to train for six, seven years to get the black belt while Evans doesn’t even need to put on a gi?

BJJ black belt has become business, what is really bad for the sport.

"Once Flamengo, Flamengo until die"

by Eduardo Cruz on Jan 19, 2010 11:04 AM EST reply actions

I don’t practice BJJ but I thought one thing about it was that you could get a belt really quickly if you were just really good. Like didn’t Penn get his Black belt in two years or something? At least in the No Gi world I think its possible that Rashad is really good,.

by SES 84 on Jan 19, 2010 12:27 PM EST up reply actions

Penn got his in 3 years and he lived at the gym training 3 times a day every day essentially. Penn is also a god damn phenom and competed in the gi and won the worlds… in the gi… at black belt; making him the first American to do so and he’s just ridiculously awesome at jiu jitsu.

The no gi worlds are essentially the ADCC… and Rashad would get tooled so very hard by even some of the smallest people there.

The mat is my church, the ground is my heaven, Jiu-Jitsu is my religion. And once you hit the ground you're in my world. My world is like the ocean, I’m like a shark and most people don't even know how to swim - Draculino

by Patrick Tenney on Jan 19, 2010 12:31 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah there is definitely a distinction between BJ and Rashad. I’m just saying that no Gi Rashad is probably better than someone who has put in a lot more time and my understanding was that skill and not time would be the big factor.

As far as ADCC since other wrestlers have done well there, I’m not sure he’d get tooled.

Look at Couture for instance (not in ADCC, but still). He fought to a draw with Jacare in an exhibition.

Once again not saying he deserves a black belt, just making some observations.

by SES 84 on Jan 19, 2010 12:54 PM EST up reply actions

The reason why wrestlers tend to lose in ADCC for the most part are the rules; check out the rules for ADCC for the first part of each match there’s no points counted, points only come into effect later in each match. This is so a takedown/stall scenario is less likely to happen.

Tito and some others have done well on physical ability and some knowledge yeah, but the game has evolved way way past that, people are throwing up 50/50 guard, inverted guardwork, cross controls, the x-guard, so many different things have been invented recently that the game is just way beyond the amount of grappling knowledge guys like Rashad/Tito etc have.

Just look at GSP… he got flying armbar’d in the first round of ADCC when he was in.

From the UG:

Rolles was just on the Fightworks Podcast and he says that this is his first BB that he’s ever awarded. I think giving a belt to a guy so that he can compete in BJJ tournaments who doesn’t even intend to compete just doesn’t make sense to me.

by Nick Thomas on Jan 19, 2010 11:13 AM EST reply actions

Also it’s a bullshit reason in the first place? Why the fuck am I spending so many hours every day training jiu jitsu if apparently all I need to say is “I’d like to compete in the black belt division, but I don’t want to put the time in in the gi to earn the black belt” and then instantly I’m a black belt? WTF is that? Seriously?

Apparently I need to get Rolles’s phone number and ask him to hook me up because I may one day compete but don’t want to compete at a lower level because it’s not as cool.

ARGH WTF I’m banging my head against my desk, seriously.

The gi makes it a different game, but honestly for me I find it more fun. The gi allows for so many more techniques and options and really makes it into a chess match; I find when I roll no-gi I rely on my athleticism and strength training way more.

Also you get less skin infections/rashes if you roll gi… if you wash your gi (WASH IT EVERY NIGHT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD).

I’ve training in a Gi with Fernando Cabeca but the rest of the schools instruction was pretty amature/mcdojo-ish. With Renzo, you know you’re getting world class instruction and great training partners.

And I found that with no-gi that I definitely relied on my natural strength and athleticism cause I’d be able to muscle out of a lot of positions or hold position just by dropping my weight down. Gi was a lot tougher cause I couldn’t do that so I ended up getting angry.

You’ll get over that hulk rage stuff in the gi after some time in it, you learn to use it offensively and defensively to set up beautiful techniques; and yeah at Renzo’s school you get your moneys worth (pricey school, but amazing) Renzo and all of his BB guys (Danaher (sp?)) are amazing. Plus the vibe I got from it when I was there for a day was really good.

I’d personally choose Marcelo’s new academy in NYC though if you’re between schools, Marcelo is well… he’s Marcelo nuff’ said.

I live in Long Branch, NJ…as far as schools nearby, I have Kurt Pelligrino MMA (did a week of free classes, he’s a really good teacher who spends time with each person to show the proper technique) and Renzo’s academy. I’m gonna take an intro at Renzo’s then figure it out. His instructors for the academy are: Instructor Joe Ahlert & Instructor Steve Dollinger.

Do you happen to know pricing for Renzo?

twitter.com/thisredengine

by Matthew Roth on Jan 19, 2010 11:46 AM EST up reply actions

Ah ok, so we’re not talking Renzo in Manhattan, I’m not sure on prices for his affiliates and usually they don’t post them online; but for the quality of instruction and how close it is to his main academy (means Renzo is more likely to be there every so often) it does sound good.

Go in for the intro for sure, the guys there will have way more information than I could hope to provide, Renzo doesn’t hand out free belts so the two guys there are going to be legit and the BJJ community in NY is becoming increasingly amazing so you’ll be in great hands for sure.

I don’t know much about Kurt other than his fights, but I usually don’t like to suggest training at an MMA fighters gym, because they have to concentrate on themselves a lot and usually aren’t around to teach more often than not (not saying they’re bad instructors, just that by nature they’re busier); I like to recommend schools with a stable instruction staff or an instructor that just competes in BJJ (like Marcelo etc) because they’re a little more stable.

Oh, Kurt definitely teaches full time there. But thanks for the advice…I’ve been trying to get my head back cause this was definitely the worst concussion I’ve had yet. I’m finally back to running after a month off cause I was getting dizzy/light headed.

When I finally head over to Renzo’s school I’ll let you know how it is. It’s a full on Renzo academy so it’s not an affiliate. It’s also like 5 minutes from his home so I’m pretty sure he’s there pretty often.

It was about $225/month to train 3-4 times per week when I was at Renzo’s a little over a year ago. I trained there for a few months, and I felt that it was way over priced. However, the other schools in NYC are expensive as well. If you are at a high level, it may be worth the extra money to train with some of the top guys (when I was there my instructors included Rolls, Gordinho and Igor), but as a white belt, it’s totally not.

Also, it should be noted that stripe/belt promotions are given based on the number of classes you have attended; they are NOT based on performance (at least up to Blue belt; I cannot confirm if this is the case for the higher belts). I was surprised that a school as vaunted as Renzo’s would engage in this type of McDojo policy, and it is one of the main reasons I left, along with price considerations.

Sorry...

As someone who has been to Ribeiro bros school and rolled with them, there is nothing funny about that statement to me. It’s a reminder of my shame.

No shame in getting tap’d 3 times in less than a minute with a guy like that.

It was much worse than that...

I was told to not worry about defending, just do anything I could to advance position and throw/chain sub attempts. Not only did everything get shut down, I was handed advantageous position then immediately swept out of it and given it again just to prove a point. The hardest part about it mentally is that everything they did were simple maneuvers. Basics and fundamentals done so fucking well that I was completely nullified. It was a wonderful learning experience.

I bet, training with the Ribiero bros is probably mind shatteringly awesome. And any good instructor will always tell you that fundamentals will be the cause of 90% of your wins and 100% of your losses, the other 10% of your wins come from you screwing around when the other guy doesn’t have the fundamentals down.

In my limited MMA training

that has been the most educational experience. It was physically intense, but the nuanced issues issues with my mental game were recognized and pointed out in short order. Saulo is (to put it lightly) a very eccentric man, but he’s also easily the best jiujitsu instructor I have trained with.

someone get eddie bravo on the phone… get over u jj freaks… gi is overrated… no-gi is more functional… if someone said lets fight would u say hold on let me get my superman costume on ? NO!

no gi is more functional its derived off of the bjj which is intended for use of the gi

this is what we call evolution people… i see no reason as to why rashad cant be a black belt level grappler…thats what its intended for..all this my martial art is precious is bullshit…

it is very easy for a wrestler to win no gi contests against black belts… if a high level wreslter only practices sub defense and postitioning. he would beat that black belt…

and who are you to say…BUT HE WASNT WEARING HIS COSTUME!.. get the fkuc out of here…

JJ guys cant handle that superior athletes came in and took over there sport…

Is this sarcasm?

If it isn’t then I’d love to have a long drawn out debate with you on the matter.

I hope that was sarcasm, cause I don’t think I could handle a long drawn out debete between you and someone who randomly uses the capslock button and punctuation.
