Quotes of the Day: Nate Marquardt and Mike Swick - "Dan Hardy Doesn't Deserve His Title Shot Against Georges St. Pierre"
"Some of the fans, hearing them talk and stuff, some of the fans are very passionate about Dan Hardy. Georges is just on another level. I honestly don't even think [Dan Hardy] deserves to be fighting Georges, but anyone, especially Dan Hardy, definitely has knockout power and Georges has to take that seriously."
"He's so well rounded, and Dan Hardy's definitely not. I think Georges could beat him in just a stand-up war, but when you throw everything else in there, Dan's in some serious trouble."
"I think it should be an easy fight for Georges."
--Nate Marquardt, believes that his friend and training partner, Georges St. Pierre will easily defeat the popular British fighter.
"You know, we both went out there and fought and he won. But I don't think he's put the time in to get a title shot in the UFC and I really want to get a rematch with him. I don't want to make any excuses about the fight, but I'm 100 % confident that I'm the better fighter and I want to prove it with a rematch... If I were to win this fight [against Paulo Thiago] and get a choice between a title shot or Dan Hardy, I would choose Dan Hardy."
"I don't think there is a chance [that Hardy beats GSP], man, I really don't. I mean [Hardy] could catch him with those punches and he hits pretty hard, but I just don't think GSP is going to go in there and play that game. I think GSP is going to go in there and take him straight to the mat and I think GSP's ground game is going to be too much for him."
--Mike Swick, who recently lost a number one contenders match to Dan Hardy, ironically also thinks that Hardy doesn't deserve his title shot.
Both guys think that Dan Hardy, despite being undefeated in his four UFC bouts, doesn't deserve his title shot, nor does he stand much of a chance of winning against the dominant welterweight champion, Georges St. Pierre. The odds-makers seem to agree as well, as St. Pierre's current line is at -600 while Hardy's is at +534. Pretty steep odds for someone who believes he's GSP's kryptonite.

Hmm
A title shot or rematch with The Outlaw? Don’t be silly Swick you pick the title fight every day.
"of a world thats doing its best, night and day,
to make me everybody else"
If he hopes to achieve a victory, then the rematch with Hardy is the right call.
Hypocrisy by Swick aside, both takes on Dan Hardy are pretty correct. I expect GSP to completely destroy Hardy in short order.
“Dan Hardy is getting the title shot? Who has he really beaten? Me?? That’s not worth a title shot.”

Swick really needs to fall back. He had 3 rounds to prove his worth.
Kos is very entertaining.

He Doesn't Deserve a Title Shot.
Get Over It.
There are a list of guys who didn’t put their time in and did not deserve a title shot.
Anderson Silva
Brock Lesnar
Randy Couture gets so many title shots it is ridiculous.
BJ Penn did not necessarily deserve a title shot at 170lbs in his 2nd GSP match.
Matt Serra put in work on a TV show, then got a title shot . . . so did Travis Lutter.
Many argue that Forrest Griffin didn’t deserve a title shot and wouldn’t stand a chance against Rampage.
Dan Henderson came into the UFC with TWO title shots.
Quinton Jackson argued against a title shot against Chuck Liddell.
And to sum it up . . . if Kimbo Slice was actually a talented MMA fighter, you better believe he would get a title shot with 2 or 3 UFC victories.

to be fair, hendo wasn’t handed those title shots, they were unification bouts as Dan had 185 and 205 gold from pride

Your right, he wasn’t handed those title shots at all but you can easily see how other fighters would probably moan and complain how his title shots were not fair.

I think you should clarify the difference between “did not deserve a title shot” and “ignoring their accomplishments elsewhere did not win enough fights in the UFC to deserve a title shot”
Giving Shogun his props. I had the fight 48-47 Machida but Shogun put up a monumental performance and I am honored to have seen it in person.
Mental Edge
Marquardt, being one of GSP’s training partners, is running the risk of taking away GSP’s edge. GSP underestimated Serra and got pounded. If he doesn’t go into this fight with some “good fear”, I’m afraid we could see another upset. He needs to quit talking and help his buddy prepare for war.
Nate was also on UFC Primetime saying that GSP was better in every facet than BJ Penn, had better training and training partners than BJ Penn, and that he saw no way BJ could win the fight. That didn’t seem to jinx it any.

I don’t get what people are talking about. I can see swick being a little whiny, but who else is GSP supposed to fight?
Let’s look at the rankings
1 GSP
2 GSP just kicked his ass
3 GSP just kicked his ass
4 GSp already beat, and the loss to thiago sucks
5 oh, look hardy

I totally agree
Divisional dominance seems to be a two-edged sword. On one hand people are impressed with your ability, on the other hand people (not everyone- certainly not me) get bored watching you fight because they think the outcome is pre-determined. I think fans have very short memories because it seems only yesterday we had all these upsets happening to top fighters (GSP included).
Would I bet on Hardy? Hell no. That doesn’t mean the fight shouldn’t happen.

Agree
GSP is going to be the clear favorite against any current WW they put him in with. While you can always quibble about who gets the shot, Hardy is, at most, one or two fighters removed from the most logical matchup.
I think Hardy has a legitimate chance here. GSP will probably dominate, but I don’t put it past Hardy to work the sprawl and take advantage of what might be a slight edge on the feet. It’d be a huge upset, but less huge than say, Sera beating GSP.
And if Hardy does win, it sets up the British striker superfight between he and Paul Daley (assuming Daley knocks Kos’s teeth in, of course).
Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.

Based on their established skill sets...
I would say a Hardy victory is a much larger upset than the Serra one was.
Serra is at least a very strong BJJ blackbelt who was known to have heavy hands, where as Hardy is an effective striker with an unknown ground game. At least Serra, in theory, was better prepared to deal with the takedown that GSP is know for.
When (not if) GSP gets the takedown on Hardy, I expect something like what he did to Sherk with finishing by elbows.
Not only that,
If swick would have won I guaruntee he would have believed he earned the shot. But if they wanna play the game of who has hardy beat, then who has swick beat? He would have beaten hardy and who else? Davis? Bottom line if swick didn’t think hardy deserved the shot he should have beat him.

Before his win over Swick, Hardy’s biggest win was arguably Marcus Davis. Before fighting Hardy, Swick’s biggest win was also over Davis, I cannot see any reason for Swick to complain. Wasn’t it him who begged for a title shot after beating Goulet?
The bolded quote, to me, means Swick was looking at the number of fighters in his win streak vs. Dan’s lower number of fights. No way Swick is going run himself down pointing out the quality of fighters Hardy beat. That’s what Koscheck’s for.

hardy can win, what if gsp has staph and is hospitalized until few days before weigh ins, then has the flu the night of the fight, then during the fight blows his acl and his groin is pulled again… bam, hardy victory.

Gareth Davies from Fighters Only gets personal
in regards to Marquardt’s comments:
I may be open to a bit of criticism here of ‘in defence of British MMA fighter Dan Hardy’ favoritism, but can’t help feeling that Nate Marquardt’s comments today were beyond the pale.
Marquardt has been quoted as saying that Dan Hardy is not deserving of a title fight v GSP, but will NM ever be rounded enough to enter the Octagon again against Anderson Silva ?
I think Marquardt has come on well in the last 18 months, two years, but didn’t Silva school him like a novice when he went in against the Brazilian for the UFC middleweight title ?
Pot, kettle, black…?
