Cheick Kongo vs. Paul Buentello
Anthony Johnson vs. John Howard
And I want Eliot Marshall vs. Vladimir Matyushenko on the main card!

The only thing that sucks is they lost Guida vs Sherk. Damn! I will say this – flamers be damned – I’m more excited by this card than UFC 108.

Guida/Gugerty won't be too bad

Yeah

But Sherk/Guida, in addition to the aforementioned, would have made this card too good for free TV. It almost already is.

That would've been awesome.

Most stacked free card ever. More than UFC 75.

Again, I’m risking setting some people off, but odds are Strikeforce’s CBS card will be the best free card we’ve seen since… I don’t know when. Which is why I am looking forward to this Spring. The free cards look great (Stikeforce, UFN 21, UFC on Versus) the ppv cards look amazing (including the boxing cards), the next round of the Super Six, and hopefully a Aoki-Melendes and Crusher-Thomson Showtime card. We may look back on this as the Golden Age of mma.

by John Nash on Jan 18, 2010 4:29 PM EST up reply actions

YOU SON OF A BITCH

The televised portion of the CBS card might be better than this (can we get some fixed opponents before you bust your load?), but it absolutely, unequivocally, without a shadow of a doubt will not be a better card than this is. Have you seen some of the fighters on SF prelims (Oxley/Gomez)?

You’re telling me you wouldn’t be excited for a Louis Taylor vs. Nate Moore undercard fight? (Don’t worry: I don’t know who the hell they are either).
And in my defense we were talking about cards on TV so that should have narrowed it to televised portions of the card. And I did write this caveat:

but the odds (my italics) are Strikeforce’s CBS card will be the best free card

by John Nash on Jan 18, 2010 5:02 PM EST up reply actions

Still

You need to consider that the UFC actually shows prelims. Would you take four great SF fights over six really good UFC fights? I wouldn’t. Quantity is important when you have fights like those on this card. I’d personally prefer that SF stops doing the Challengers show in its present capacity, and puts some of those bad asses on these undercards and then airs them later as Challengers. Makes for better “big” cards.

(BTW, Craig Oxley is 0-2 and David Gomez is 3-2).

Oxley and Gomez look like a couple of real up-and-comers

Hopefully StrikeForce has got their act together and is able to get a pretty good fifth fight on the card (still makes no sense that Coenen-Modafferi didn’t make the last broadcast).

I think your suggestion is a good one. I know Strikeforce likes to book local talent for the prelims because it’s cheap and helps sell tickets, but hopefully they’ll at least book 2 or 3 good challengers type matches on the prelims for every card. It’s the least they can do. And tape them!

Back to the UFC. If the Brendan Schaub and Chase Gormley fight gets signed what fights are going to make the broadcast and which ones are we going to miss?

by John Nash on Jan 18, 2010 5:21 PM EST up reply actions

I'm still not sure

It might only be a two hour block, but VS seems to not mind going over on WEC broadcasts. They might schedule four and end up showing five or six.

I wouldn’t put too much weight at all in the Strikeforce pre-lims and who’s fighting on them.
They never show a pre-lim fight and use their Challengers series for prospects they want to build.
These pre-lim fights on their major events are just card filler for the ticket buyers.

by scrambledeggs on Jan 18, 2010 6:06 PM EST up reply actions

I bet if you were going to this show, or they actually aired any prelims when they have time remaining, you’d care.

by Blackout612 on Jan 18, 2010 6:07 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah I’d care if there was a chance they were going to televise any pre-lims, but after how early the Carano/Cyborg event finished and they didn’t show any I kinda figured they don’t care about these pre-lims.

For this event however the people on the Strikeforce website seem to be insinuating they’re going to stream the Riggs/Hieron fight.

by scrambledeggs on Jan 18, 2010 6:14 PM EST up reply actions

Carano/Cyborg?

What about the last show? That ended so abruptly, it was just awkward. They really need to get it together with taping prelims and airing them when they have extra time.

by Blackout612 on Jan 18, 2010 6:16 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah the last show ended a little early, but I remember after the Lawler fight was cancelled Showtime came out and said it would be a 4 fight televised card.

The Carano/Cyborg card I worked that night set my DVR which was a 2 and a half hour time frame the show wasn’t even 2hrs. because of early finishes and they showed nothing extra.
I was really surprised at that.

I see this fight being very similar to Kongo’s fight with Heath Herring. It’s very close.

by scrambledeggs on Jan 18, 2010 6:23 PM EST up reply actions

Paul

Doesn’t have anywhere near as good wrestling as Herring (not saying Heaths is particularly good). Overeem didn’t bother standing with Paul, I don’t see why Kongo would.

by Chris Barton on Jan 18, 2010 6:55 PM EST up reply actions

Not sure what you’re talking about. Heath Herring’s wrestling is the worst part of his game, and Kongo won’t be taking Paul down like Alistair did.

by scrambledeggs on Jan 18, 2010 8:05 PM EST up reply actions

Hmm

Hate to burst your bubble, but Herring is actually a pretty decent wrestler. Don’t let the Lesnar fight fool you.

The Lesnar fight, the Jake O’Brien fight, going back to the Tom Erikson fight and Mark Kerr. Fedor took him down at will. The UFC couldn’t wait to match him with Lesnar and Cain Velasquez. Heath Herring is not a good wrestler at all.

by scrambledeggs on Jan 18, 2010 8:26 PM EST up reply actions

Herring never fought Velasquez

And he choked out Erikson, so I’m not sure how that’s making a point.

by Blackout612 on Jan 18, 2010 8:39 PM EST up reply actions

Did you see the fight with Herring and Tom Erikson?

Herring couldn’t get get up off the canvas during fight and it was stood up because of a stalemate then Herring caught Erikson with a shot dropped him took his back and choked him out.
His wrestling was awful in that fight. That’s why I mentioned it.

And yes I’m aware that Herring never fought Velasquez he was supposed to at UFC 99. My point as far as that goes is the UFC after seeing how awful Herring was at defending takedowns in the O’Brien fight matched Herring up with Lesnar when they wanted to get him a win over a name guy and had Herring scheduled for a fight with Cain to help put him over.

by scrambledeggs on Jan 18, 2010 10:24 PM EST up reply actions

He's not a world beater

I didn’t say he’s a great wrestler, but he can wrestle. Diego isn’t a terrible wrestler, but better wrestlers have their way with him. Visiting the original point— is Herring a better wrestler than Burrito? Yes, yes he is. I don’t think Burrito can wrassle up Kongo the way Herring did. He worked side control beautifully in that fight. Knee’d the SHIT out of his torso.

The part where I mentioned that Heaths wrestling isn’t particularly good? Also, most of the people you listed below that were able to take Heath down are amazing wrestlers/ take down artists.

What makes you think Alistair has better wrestling than Kongo, or that Paul has better TD defense than Heath?

by Chris Barton on Jan 19, 2010 11:29 AM EST up reply actions

Paul’s got heavy hands and Kongo’s been dropped more than once.

I agree Kongo can be dropped, but Buentello isn’t as fit as he should be to do it. Kongo is going to be much larger and more solid. Consider how much trouble Strueve gave him, and imagine someone making full use of that body. I’m pulling for the Headhunter, but I doubt he wins.

Gotta go with Kongo on this one even though I am a fan of Buentello. This fight just shows how far the Heavyweight Division has gone (not the fight itself, but the bigger picture) because these one-dimensional sttrikers in Heavyweight slowly but surely seem to be going by the wayside. I guess that these two will be the gatekeepers of the UFC Heavyweight Division (Buentello was already there, but Kongo was very recently in talks of being in Title contention).
