The Week in Quotes: January 10th - 16th
IF YOU WILL NOT FIGHT, THEN YOU WILL MEET YOUR DESTINY
"There is only one champion, so I believe this fight must happen." - Yoshizo Machida, on the failure of Golden Boy and Top Rank to put together a fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. Or on his son fighting Anderson Silva. (Portaldovt.com)
"Deep down, everyone wants to know who is strongest." - Machida. Couldn't they just arm wrestle or something?
"Friendship is friendship, but they're not amateurs." - Machida. Like collegiate athletes?
"The eventual winner isn't my concern. What matters to me is how they win, and their strategy. This would be a mental battle." - Machida
IT'S A TRAP!
"We made the decision early on that if we were to bring on a partner, it wasn’t for financial reasons." - Zuffa CEO Lorenzo Fertitta, on selling 10% of the UFC to Abu Dhabi-based Flash Entertainment. (TSN)
"We didn’t need to raise any money, that wasn’t the purpose. If we were going to bring somebody it was going to be with someone that could really be a true strategic partner and could help create an increased value for the company long term." - Fertitta. Oh, and our casinos are going bankrupt and we kind of need some cash to keep them afloat to avoid a takeover from Boyd Gaming.
THAT FACE YOU MAKE...LOOK I SO OLD TO YOUNG EYES?
"He's in as fine a shape as Muhammad Ali or any of these people we've had the care of." - Allan Fields, chief physician for the Florida Boxing Commission, on Herschel Walker. We gonna get Ali-Holmes II in Miami? (HeraldNet)
"This guy is 47 going on 22, as far as his physical fitness goes." - Fields, who had been evaluating Walker's youthful split personality.
"Jose Canseco, it's insulting, the guy never trained. I'm a guy that's serious about this. This is fighting, you get hurt." - Walker. He understands the risks of fighting, so give this guy a license!
YOUNG FOOL...ONLY NOW, AT THE END, DO YOU UNDERSTAND
"With more rigorous oversight, training and medical requirements - mixed martial arts has made considerable strides to ensure the safety of participants." - David Catalfamo, spokesman for former New York Governor George Pataki (NY Daily News)
"With these measures in mind, Gov. Pataki would be supportive of allowing the sport in New York in today." - Catalfamo. I guess when your state is nearing a one billion dollar deficit, you let all sorts of trash and rabble rousing in.
YOUR OVERCONFIDENCE IS YOUR WEAKNESS
"A fight is a fight. I definitely came to fight. It seemed like Ben was doing a little bit more running." - Former WEC lightweight champ and douche-of-Spencer-Pratt-proportions Jamie Varner, on his loss to Benson Henderson. (Bloody Elbow)
"I started going out. I was trying at first and then it was just done. He had it in." - Varner, on the standing guard guillotine choke that ended the fight. Varner tapped quicker than a fourteen year old virgin with the prom queen.
WHITE NOISE
"When another fighter starts dictating a drug test, first of all Pacquiao’s never tested positive for any drug but Floyd’s going to make him go through drug testing? That’s ridiculous." - UFC President Dana White on the Pacquiao-Mayweather mess. Gamesmanship or not, are we really going to blast Floyd for wanting as much of a guarantee of a clean fight as possible? (5th Round)
"That fight not happening is insane, it makes no sense to me." - White. What, forty million dollars means something to you?
"We gotta put people in there who have a better shot at beating B.J. Penn. And Gray Maynard didn't sell me on that last night." - White. What about when Gray Maynard beat Frankie Edgar six ways from Sunday? (Cage Writer)
"Frankie Edgar has looked great in his last few fights and he's been dominating good opponents." - White. Is Veach, Sherk, and Franca that much better than Diaz, Huerta, and Miller? Really?
PARTING SHOTS
"You know if you look at his face compared to mine right now you'd think there was no way he beat me in a fight but I've never been too popular with the judges." - Nate Diaz, on his loss to Gray Maynard. Won't your eyes be all puffy and red, KID FROM STOCKTON? (Gracie Fighter)
"I went BOOM and I was back." - Aaron Simpson, on his comeback win over Tom Lawlor. Ari Gold called and wants his catch phrase back. (MMA Mania)
"I think if the UFC says 'Hey, Jon Fitch, you're the champion and Josh Koscheck is the number one contender,' then this is a business." - AKA trainer Javier Mendez. So...Fitch and Koscheck are never fighting then? (MMA Fighting)
"I’ve never seen anybody tap out from tickling, but then again I’ve never tried it." - MMA legend Dan Severn. Who wants a mustache ride? (Star Exponent)

Should’ve gone for the “that was sarcasm…really it was” route.

I only take consolation in the fact that JEDI was the worst of the three and the one I hardly watched.

Dude, I gagged a bit
when I first read your statement, with the sun-glare on my TV, as reading “Varner comments were more shiny than my 12 year old sister.”
Not your fault, it’s my damned 61" RPTV. But still…

yeah, it stands for
rear projection television. They don’t really make them any more, I guess? But man, what a cheap way to have a freakin’ theater in your living room. 61" of 1080p for ~$2k. I don’t even buy PC monitors..just make sure my laptop or desktop have graphics cards with HDMI out and I’m all good.
Fallout 3 rules on my TV. So does posting on BE.

If the whole thing with Mayweather wanting as much of a guarantee of a clean fight as possible didn’t have this enormous asterisk next to it (that being there most likely having some sort of ulterior motive like getting in Pacquiao’s head or something else, and that Pacquiao hasn’t failed a drug test), then I would be in full agreement of doing it. Mayweather’s camp has claimed that any fight that Mayweather is in that his challenger would have to go through with that particular drug test that he wanted for Pacquiao. If that doesn’t happen with Mayweather’s next challenger, and they still fight, then that will be proof that Mayweather and his camp lack any type of credibility.

I honestly cannot understand the people who think that all poor little Floyd wanted was to make sure it was a safe fight for him. That’s seriously swallowing the tackle, right there. Like, the whole pole.
On the grounds that any advance in drug testing is good for both protecting fighters and legitimizing the sport, I’m all for a major increase in the drug testing standards of all combat/competitive sports. And while Floyd’s little display can be part of the process for bringing about that change, it’s absolutely petty and feminine to accuse your number one competitor for the top spot in the sport of being a cheater when there is zero evidence to support that claim.
If there were no standardized tests, or if top people were popping positives left and right in the world of boxing, Floyd would have something of a leg to stand on. This is not the case.
I just don’t get how intelligent people willingly try to swallow the whole damned boat when Floyd drops the line. It’s really quite stunning.

I know what you mean. If Pacquiao actually failed a drug test, then Mayweather and his camp would have a legitimate and credible reason for Pacquiao to do this specialized test. There are many people, including a good friend of mine, that believe that Pacquiao is doing steroids claiming that he looks bigger. I am of the belief that while it is entirely possible, unless he does test positive, I have no reason and don’t believe that he has done them.

gray over frankie but gray isnt there mentally…how can u throw someone in against a monster like bj who isnt ready or just doesnt want it…
frankie seems up to the task grey will get his oppurtunity.. i think grey will go after bj when he feels totally confident in his game which he isnt yet…
to me it feels like gray needs to go after a diego or kenflo or sherk before making that big step

That interview Maynard gave in the cage after the Diaz fight…he sounded like someone who did not want to fight BJ Penn. Edgar wants him. He’s looked good recently. Let him have it.

In regards to Edgar’s recent opponents, Sherk was the last LW champ before BJ Penn, and Franca actually challenged for the title before.
Beating Diaz doesn’t seem to be worth much these days, he hasn’t exactly been setting the world on fire.
MMAth of “He beat this guy!” aside, Edgar has looked much more like a guy who is ready to challenge for a title than Maynard. Maynard is still looking green. Although I see him having a shot at it after a few more fights.
That said I think Edgar is gonna get worked. Sadly. Too small and BJ will probably outskill him. Which makes me sad, because I really like seeing BJ Penn lose.
