Georges St Pierre Says His Move to Middleweight Will Be Permanent
If and when he makes it.
From Ariel Helwani:
However, GSP recently explained to the media that it's not that easy. He said that if should ever move up in a weight, he must be sure that his work is officially done at 170, because he won't be able to move back down. Plus, the current welterweight champion added that he has always been hesitant to move up because he has many friends who fight at 185, and he would never consider fighting any of them.
Here's the video:

I dont think he’ll move up until Marquardt is out of title contention.

Which will be soon. Marquardt will probably beat Sonnen and get his second shot at Silva. Which he’ll probably lose.

2 fights left for both before the Spider vs GSP
To be honest theres only 2 more fights left for both(Anderson and GSP) before that fight MUST happen, and that is IF they win both:
GSP vs Hardy and Semtex, if he wins against Ko’s
Silva vs Vitor and Marquardt, if he wins against Sonnen

He should stick to 170 pounds for as long as his body can make that weight.
There is something to be said for being a dominant champion at one weight class for as long as humanly possible.
by Timmy B on Jan 17, 2010 7:35 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
This is actually the case.
I forgot how much GSP weighs nowadays, but he’s literally approaching the ‘safety limit’ for weight cutting to get down to 170. His walking weight (which is essentially his fit, training weight, since he’s a machine) is now in the 190’s. He already declared what the number was that, once he moved past it, he wouldn’t be comfortable cutting to 170.
He’s getting closer and closer.

He said he'll move up when he hits 200.
He also said he was at 196 during training for Dan Hardy (but probably some extra fat on him from rehabbing the groin).

bj does not have the capability to move up a weight class properly
gsp does yet hes too short
only people who should move up a weight class are people who have appropriate size n height
by p123 on Jan 18, 2010 1:35 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
please gsp dont move up maintain ur 170 dominance for ur career this moving up in weight stuff sux ruins champions and it just sucks…
if ur really good at something should u quit n do something else hell no new challengers will present themselves enjoy being on top geeez!
people forget that gsp would be tiny in 185 hes actually a pretty small welterweight height wise… 5’10 no knock out power in middleweight is not gunna go good ..
ull see gsp completely turn into a full wreslter much like a koshcheck in his beggining who the hell wants to see that?

Who is left for him to fight?
Kos has improved since they fought, but does anyone think he’ll actually win? Paulo Thiago and Paul Daley aren’t ready yet.
Everyone else has either lost recently or GSP has already soundly beaten them. It’s time for the next challenge.

On my scorecards he was 1 takedown away from beating GSP in their last fight. So yes, I do think he can win if he implements the correct gameplan.
And I would rather see him fight credible guys for a year at his best weight and wait until the next crop of super challengers comes up… then go to a weight class he is too small for and see him struggle…
by Timmy B on Jan 17, 2010 7:51 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I think a second Koscheck fight would be absolutely worthwhile.
he has the skill and instinct to stifle GSP’s takedowns, something nobody else at WW can say. And while his boxing isn’t fantastic it’s pretty good by MMA standards, aside from that jumping look-down jab thing he threw against Paulo Thiago. I think he is the most compelling matchup at WW for GSP.
If Daley can sprawl through Koscheck takedowns and lay hands on him, he has earned a shot at GSP. If he KOs Koscheck before any TD attempts, then put him against Paulo Thiago if he beats Swick for #1 contender.

yea pretty much themachiavellen ur asking for an undeserving welterweight champ… if everytime a champ wins for a while he moves up and never comes back there will always be controversy for the new champion… why would u want to struggle when ur doing the right thing and the best….
gsp future opponents look a lot brighter than bjs or anderson’s
potential challengers for gsp in the next yr to 2
the strikers
daley and rumble if they square away there td and how to get up quickly off there back
those guys have the power to legitimately put gsp out cold…they are athletic enough to compete with anyone doing anything in mma… george obviously has the edge grappling wise but if these guys can step it up on that end they have to be taking seriously and by the way really fun match ups to watch
koscheck is by far the biggest overall all around threat to gsp right now.. he has ko power his striking has gotten much much better still not georges level but he has more power than george could even out… hes the closest one to george wrestling wise and can be competitive wrestling and striking…no one else can say that besides him
hopefully he beats daley and we get to see this fight im looking forward to this most at 170
daley and rumble need more wrestling and subd…hardy gets this shot koscheck gets next gives time for these two to max out their potential on those aspects and u have 2 good fights for 2011

thiago alves after a few wins is also a major threat. Gsp brutally electric blanketed that guy I mean he fought him smart but he clearly feared thiago’s stand-up game

Those brazilian fighters will be dangerous
the day they understand that wrestling > BJJ/striking in a hierarchy of skills. You can’t use your BJJ/striking if you can’t wrestle you way into the proper position.
I think Alves is in a perfect position to learn that lesson.
There is no such thing as innocence, only degrees of guilt.

Alves was really good at stuffing the takedowns of Hughes and Kos and I think he stopped one or two of GSP’s attempts.
Alves has good TD defence but GSP is just that good.

i agree… mentioned below that alves td is sick already gsp might be just that damn good…
i think kos has the best potential to beat gsp a wrestler with ko ability who is experienced kos gameplan seems to be the issue but his gameplan seemed just fine against rumble

1. Use the “reply” feature.
2. Use grammar & punctuation.
3. I think you’re disagreeing with me, so I’ll answer with that assumption in mind.
I don’t think it’s possible to have an “undeserving” champ if GSP moves up – once he’s out of the WW field, he by definition can’t be the best WW in the world, so someone else would move into that position. Rumble wouldn’t beat GSP now – he couldn’t handle Kos’s wrestling, so GSP would dominate him. Daley’s improvements in TD Defense are unknown, but if they’re still at the same level they were for the Shields fight, he’s getting GnP’d. Fitch got destroyed and hasn’t ooked great his last few outings. Alves got outworked by an injured GSP, so he needs a few wins before a rematch. Kos does look better than before, but he doesn’t have the tactical ability necessary unless he begins using his wrestling again, and then GSP is probably bigger & stronger, so I don’t have confidence in Kos’s improvements being enough.

yes daley vs kos will be a good measure if daley has improved…
fitch has no shot and never will…
i mentioed daley and rumble as future as i said 2011 clearly…
hardy and kos for 2010 hardy eh kos yes im excited if he can get by daley
and kos is starting to use his wrestling again just because some fighters stray doesnt mean that its for them they are more trying to improve that skill and what better than real world experience?
if your not happy with those guys then who are u happy with guy? these are the legit challengers theres no one else get over it
by p123 on Jan 18, 2010 1:39 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
My point is that only either Kos or Daley is left as a legit challenger, and then neither might not be ready for a title shot.
GSP should go to MW after cleaning out WW, and it’s looking like he’s done that already.

It's a profession for rice cakes
I, on one side think that the respect these guys display for one another generally is what makes MMA in 2010 really special and is a good reason why the sport has broad base appeal. Now that being said these f**kin guys need to take this whole he’s my friend bit and put it aside. The rules are such that they can be sportsman. The best need to fight the best in order for it to have legitimacy. I as a fan feel entitled to say I want to see GSP vs Nate Marquardt , Big Nog vs Little Nog, Shogun Vs Wandy, Anderson vs Machida, So many fights amongst friends to be had. so i think the only option is guys to take the diego sanchez approach which by today he shoulda probably stayed with jackson and moved to lw but no one can predict the future…
do not join camps with top contenders in ur weight division if u are a top contender simple as that…theres plenty of camps around and honestly its not bad if one or two guys cant fight
it gets bad when its 3 or more like kos fitch n swick
but thats really only two kos n fitch,,,, swick really isnt top 10 no matter how hard u push

too big of strikers too big wrestlers…bj has a shot against most of them obvi but he cant be dominant it wont happen he cant maintain that much weight for his frame and his cardio would not be good…
i dont want to see the best fighters out of their best weight… meaning they arent reaching their full potential… a bj penn at lw is 100 and at ww is a 90 same with gsp and honestly anderson….why would i wanna see another 90 fighter when i can see 100?

It cannot be easy for him to cut that much weight, and there are not too many elite 205 wrestlers out there.

It makes sense for GSP to move up
If GSP beats Hardy then the Semtex – Kos winner who would be next. Alves – Fitch winner? From the UFC’s and St. Pierre’s perspective, why would he fight guys he dominated in the last two years again? They can’t hype that fight. That can’t get buys for that fight. I’m sure GSP gets paid a percentage of PPV buys so there is no incentive either competitively or finanically to continue to fight at 170.
Just looking at financial potential, is there more to gain from a third Penn fight or a Silva fight?

i agree with this… if gsp beats hardy then kos then lets say rumble and daley get it together and there are no other challengers ok i understand then..
but ur talking about 2 yrs of fights ur telling me nothing in the heirachy of the ww division is gunna happen by then..
u my friend are seriously underestimating mma its a continuous evolving sport look at hardy look at daley look at kampman there will be others..
i agree with ur logic but also feel that shit if ur the best 170er in the world its not a bad thing ride it out as long as u can… gsp is what 28 or 30? how long can he maintain that for 3 to 5 yrs? it wont be worth it if he goes mw and gets killed..
obvi hendo is gone but u dont think hendo wouldnt give gsp major problems if not annihalate him? hes kos (BY THE WAY the person who has the skills to beat gsp) with a chin …
actually hes kos with better wrestling better hands more power and better chin…
hendo would kill gsp

I think most people would say for the forseeable future there are no WW with a complete package that can negate either St. Pierre’s world class wrestling skills or his top notch stand up. Alves just needs better takedown defense to be a true challenger to the title. So I’ll concede that point.
But I will say this. Most of us have played some sport or trained in martial arts or have been in some competetive venue once in our life. If I was the best student in school I’m not going to the local community college if I can be at MIT. It’s likely that I might sink in a big pond but true competitors (assuming St. Pierre is one) will search for a different challenge.
On the Hendo point, I don’t think any of us can speculate on how a 185 GSP will fight. Obviously he is an athletically superior WW which is why he is the most effective mixed martial artist with regards to takedowns. His strength may translate to a bigger weight class. Also if I have to speculate on a imaginary Hendo – GSP fight. I think the only way St. Pierre wins that fight is to use his speed to win the exchanges and pull out a decision win. That is possible as well as probable so I wouldn’t go so far to say annihilate.

On the first point I meant to say that Alves can get better takedown defense but people have been saying that about Kongo for years so how likely is that type of evolution?

Just because one person does not evolve doesn’t mean another will not either.
Alves is younger and trains in USA where Kongo trains in UK.
GSP has improved his wrestling since he began fighting too… just a bit.
Hard work and natural athleticism (of which Alves has both) will certainly give him all the tools to master new skills.
