MMA Junkie reports on a fight that was widely-rumored to be happening in the near future:

Sources close to the negotiations informed MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that the two have verbally agreed to the match-up, though an undisclosed injury to Koscheck that scrapped his expected UFC 109 rematch with Paulo Thiago could hold up contracts from being signed.

The UFC 113 rumored card now includes:

Not sure if you're serious..

But Toney in the UFC is a bad idea. Mitrione won his fight with Big Baby, so he gets to stick around. Who else would you match him up with, in good conscience? Kimbo/Mitrione is the way to go.

There was a thread on Toney in the UFC and lots of people myself included would be very entertained by a Toney Kimbo fight. Kimbo Mitrione is fine matchmaking though.

Though, it would be awesome if Kimbo shot on him and sub’d him out. I’d mark out for that..

I still want the Kimbo vs Gracie, and it won't happen anytime soon, but I won't stop clamoring for it.

well that’s unless Kimbo looks really fucking bad (worse) on this fight, and Gracie looks really fucking awesome against Al Turk.

I’m tempted to say you will never see Gracie/Kimbo.

by Blackout612 on Jan 17, 2010 1:23 AM EST up reply actions

If Gracie doesn't look that great against Al Turk,

I don’t see why we shouldn’t see that fight… If Gracie looks awesome and dominating, proving that he is the real deal and ready to take on stiffer competition, (which is a possibility), then I will agree with you on that, and we shouldn’t see Kimbo vs Gracie…

but if Gracie wins/loses in a so so match which still shows that he has a lot of work to do before stepping up in competition, I don’t see why not. Kimbo vs Gracie could be a decent main card fight that would pull in the casuals, either on PPV or on Spike/Versus.

by Anton Tabuena on Jan 17, 2010 1:29 AM EST up reply actions

I don't think it all hinges on Gracie

Kimbo currently has more credibility/value (after his win over Houston). Rolles isn’t going to vault Kimbo no matter what he does against Al Turk. But seriously, (and I know we’ve been over this before) I don’t think this is a good fight unless something changes. Kimbo is going from Houston (who has a lot of recognizability) to Mitrione (who is known from TUF, but for being a bit of a reluctant baby). I sincerely doubt that he’ll follow that up with a fight with Rolles.

not much interesting fights for him out there,

and I think this is an interesting bout for him.. IF Gracie looks as green as he did on his last bout (cause it won’t make sense if it’s a clear clear mismatch).

Their names alone would spark interest, and if kimbo manages to beat Mitrione and Gracie, that would say a lot about his improvement. Not getting subbed by a Gracie would add a lot to his ‘cred’… Maybe not to the Hardcores, but the casuals will take notice for sure.

Rolles on the other hand, would get his much needed cage time, and would get a win over another name fighter in a bout that will be seen by millions. (again, IF he shows that he’s too green for stiffer competition. Al Turk would be a good litmus test for that since he’s not really that good a striker, and Rolles probably has the better jits)

Might not be able to convince you or the others, but if they prove to be not ready for stiffer competition yet, I still would really like to see this bout.

Hopefully Daley is more disciplined than Johnson.

I don’t know how to feel about Rumble/Kos except Kos rebounded from his (alleged) injury well, and Johnson is a bit wild and lost on the ground. Daley also has more precise striking. Hhopefully Kos hasn’t seen the Jake Shields fight yet.

I don’t think Kos is going to be stupid like in the past. In the Rumble fight, it looks like he’s found his wresting again. That, and he wants a title shot, so I don’t think he’ll take that chance to purely stand with Daley. It will be a good test to see just how far Daley’s takedown defense has come.

SMH...

Daley has 8X the experience Rumble has. Daley’s stand-up is better than Rumbles. Sure his wrestling isn’t great but It took Shields late in the 2nd round to sub Daley. If you watched that fight you seen how much of a tuff time Jake had trying to sub Daley. My point is comparing him to an inexperienced rumble is ridiculous.

Rumble doesn't have great striking.

He’s just big with a reach advantage at WW and has epic power. Daley is faster, more technical, less likely to gas, and also has power.

It is kind of a pointless fight, Kos just took out Rumble who I would say had a much better chance. At least Rumble had some wrestling, reach, and power, where as Paul Daley just has power.

by xDieseLx on Jan 16, 2010 8:11 PM EST reply actions

Paul Daley beat higher-ranked competition, and is closer to a title shot. A win over Koscheck, and Daley gets elevated to #1 contender, easy. A win by Koscheck, and there might be enough momentum behind him for that GSP rematch.

Not pointless, but if Kos loses I would be surprised. There has been no evidence in his 2 UFC fights that Daley has improved his ground game at all. I mean does anyone really think that if this turns into a wrestling match that Daley has a shot? He can definitely catch Kos, but outside from that I just see this being a boring fight where Daley could be matched up in more entertaining fights.

That was my point. Obviously, getting the quick KO is his gameplan and he has been successful so far, but since he got the quick KOs he never used his ground game. Im not faulting him for it. Im just saying I would be more excited for this fight if I thought Daley could defend a takedown. This is a fight I would love to see Kos do his usual no wrestling gameplan so we can get a nice KO, but I just don’t see him being that stupid with Daley.

Most of the ranked MWs are already booked I think, so there aren't much interesting bouts for him at the moment.

unless he drops to 170 and takes on the winner Swick/Thiago for the next title shot.. That would be something I’d like to see also.

And you can really justify that title shot with him being a top 10 MW, who would take on a top 5 or 6 WW contender..

by Anton Tabuena on Jan 17, 2010 2:07 AM EST up reply actions

I'm not a big proprietor of Sexyama at 170

I think if he proves he can’t hang at 185, he moves; but he handled Belcher (who is a bigger middleweight) and I think he should play it out. Maybe the UFC is waiting for one of the better fighters to have a non-injury performance and face him on short(er) notice.

yeah, I'm not saying he is bad at MW or anything like that, cause he obviously proved to be a pretty good MW already.

but if he could do a Diego Sanchez and drop a division to get a quick title shot, I don’t see why not, and I think it would be good for his career..

How many wins would it take for him to get a title shot at 185, compared to fighting at 170? .. Plus it would be easier for him to take on GSP rather than A.Silva (in my opinion, cause Silva is a big and bad dude, while GSP is just a bad dude. haha.) Well this is if he doesn’t have problems cutting weight.

by Anton Tabuena on Jan 17, 2010 2:29 AM EST up reply actions

You know

This hold on scheduling him might have everything to do with the fact that it doesn’t matter what class he’s in— he’s not far from a shot based on his pay-rate. I don’t think he’s any more likely to get a shot at 170 than he is 185. Silva is probably holding out for a legit challenger, considering the only one that is seemingly available at present is his friend and training partner (Thunder).

I think if he beats the winner of Thiago/Swick he’d get a title shot already..

At MW, There’s belfort, and winner of Nate/Sonnen, who is already lined up and will likely get the next title shot, while at 170, after Hardy, there’s a shortage of number 1 contenders, unless Daley dispatches of Kos easily..

either way, I think it all boils down to marketing and I think it would be better for his career to go down.. He’d be easier to sell and market as the dangerous top contender at WW as he would be the big MW contender who can be matching up against Anderson, but chose to drop down.

by Anton Tabuena on Jan 17, 2010 2:49 AM EST up reply actions

Even fighting the winner of Thiago/Swick comes too late. The winner of Kos/Daley will have something to say about a title shot. It’s not too unlike the 185 picture, quite frankly.

Great card. I love this time in MMA when multiple fights are being announced or at least rumored. Koscheck vs Daley makes a lot of sense. In order for Daley to be seen as a threat to GSP, he has to be tested against a strong wrestler like a Koscheck or Fitch. For Koscheck, a win will most likely propel him to a Title shot against the winner of GSP vs Hardy. I have to go with Koscheck in this fight. I think that Koscheck will take this fight to the ground, and we may see one of those “Josh Koscheck shots” where he shoots in and just keeps running causing a big slam. Daley is always dangerous on the feet though, but I don’t see this fight staying on the feet for very long.

I don't think that picture is real.

IT’s from MMA Bay and neither of those guys are Wolfslair fighters. I call bullshit!

This should be an easy win for Koscheck, just take him to the ground and pound him out. I have tons ofm respect for Daley but he really has a subpar ground game.

If and I mean IF

Koscheck is dumb enough to keep this standing for any length of time it’ll only end one way.

The difference in punching technique and power it too great, but it was a chance for a double KO.

i dont think Daley is a better striker than Johnson or Kosch …. guys getting way too pumped up.. i mean cmon, if Mclovin tried to kickbox with lets say rumble Johnson or Kosch, he would have got stretched out just as quick, if not faster as Daley did him… that being said i dont think Daleys going to win, no matter where the fight takes place… funny how everyone thinks Daleys some elite striker LOL! Koscheck is going to stamp him with the right hand and put him away!

I LOL'd at this

Koscheck is a better striker than Daley? HA! Kosheck is a wrestler whose fallen in love with striking. I guess you forgot about what happened in the Paulo Thiago fight. Here’s his flawed technique to refresh your memory.

Koscheck is miles behind Daley in the striking department. Here’s some good reading material for you.

i never said anything about Koschecks technique and also definitely agree his a wrestler whos fell in love with his striking, thats exactly how i desribe Kosch also…..

but i still think he can KO Daley … i think he hits harder, and havent fell in the UFC’s pumping of Daleys as some elite striker either …. he likes to slug(more so than box) and i see him getting KTFO slugging with Kosch.

hits harder?

please.

LOLwhat?

Hits harder? NEGATORY. Can he KO Daley? Maybe, but will he? Highly unlikely. His sloppy wide open technique will get exploited, and he’ll get KTFO’d. Also Kosheck only has 4 KO/TKO’s out of his 14 wins (28.5%) while 18 of Daley’s 23 (78.2%) wins have come via KO/TKO. Just sayin’…

man...

wow either you guys are just riding Daley or must have some serious hate for Koscheck, the guy carries a better punch than Daley, and like i said, when they slug, you guys are going to see Daley get KTFO!

You think Daley can go 3 rounds with GSP?? Rumble Johnson would knock Daleys lights out ….. Kosch has been fighting the better competition and winning man, only loss 2 decisions , to GSP and Alves, which i dont see Daley lasting a round with either of those guys… and he got caught by Thiago…. but you guys need to either chill on hating on Kosch or get off Daleys lap, you guys are just being ridiculous.

They are keeping him for special occasions, the UFC don’t want to risk Sexyama oversaturation. His last fight was at UFC 100 so The Sexy One will not fight until UFC 125
