Sean Sherk out of UFC on Versus fight with Clay Guida:
"Sean Sherk has turned down a proposed lightweight bout against Clay Guida for UFC’s debut on Versus on March 21 at the Odeum Colorado in Broomfield, Colo."
"Monte Cox, Sherk’s manager, told Sherdog.com on Friday that the Minnesotan wrestler had been offered the bout, but couldn’t accept it due to a lingering injury."
"Sherk was forced to pull out of a Jan. 2 bout against Jim Miller at UFC 108 when he cut his forehead three weeks out from the event and needed multiple stitches... Sherk also bowed out of a bout against Gleison Tibau at UFC 104 last October when he suffered a "Grade II AC separation" in his right shoulder while rolling with a training partner."

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK
I saw something earlier about Gugerty getting the fight. This sucks man..

I thought that fighting against Sherk would be a dangerous fight for Guida
Guida is on a two fight losing streak with his last loss being more or less dominated by Kenny Florian. While the fight would probably be fun to watch, I don’t think that Guida would beat Sherk. Guida vs Gugerty is a much safer fight for Guida.
I honestly think
that this would be one fight where keeping it standing would be an advantage for Sherk. His striking (while seriously lacking) is much better than Guida’s, and he would without a doubt in my mind be able to stuff Clay’s shots.
Too bad it’s not happening, it would’ve been a freaking slobberknocker

I was really excited to see them fight. They both have excellent cardio and Sherk would have been hurting him with inside strikes for sure.

O/U Gugerty getting subbed is set at 3:45 mark of round 2.
Matt Hasselbeck's satellite TV signals would get intercepted.
I’ll take the over since Clay hasn’t subbed anyone in over 3 years

This sucks I wanted Clay to get right back in title contention win a win over Sherk, the Gugerty fight basically is a lose lose fight for Guida now. He loses he’s almost on his way out and if he wins he doesn’t go up the ranking much. I’m really starting to sour on Sherk he needs to get his stuff together before he finds himself out of the UFC with this crap.
imo no way he would've beat Sherk.
I'm like PacMan fightin you silly kids... throw ya Hatton the ring, and get knocked outlike Ricky did.
lol.

Can't believe that I'm saying this
But I think Sherk would have outbox’d him.

@deowade
Sherk isn't a terrible boxer
But he’s not as good a boxer as Frankie or Beej and his reach is a major hurdle.

Yea, I've never had a problem with his technique. It was always the reach (Insert "That's what she said" Joke Here)
But I did see Guida getting peppered every time he tried to close the distance.

@deowade
Yeah, he would definitely get close enough for Sherk to connect on his strikes. I bet he’d knock Guida out, honestly..

Really?
Sherk has never shown fearsome power in his strikes. Guida has shown an inhuman ability to absorb punishment and keep excitedly hopping up and down in a post-fight/belch celebration. Unless you believe that either of Sherk’s hands have more power than Diego’s left leg.

Not that I know what we should be suspicious about
…but between his problems in the past, the comments from Dave Meltzer after the first cancellation, the weird way he dropped out for a tiny cut, it feels like either he has more extensive health problems than we’re being led to believe, or there’s something else going on.
I’m of course hoping that either:
a) this is all just crap luck and he goes on to a fabulous career starting with his next fight, or
b) there’s some hysterical hijinx going on that I can mock for the next 6 months.
Either would be fine.

I mean, “pulled out of a rumored fight”? That’s some tenuous stuff right there.

Sherk might be shot. Rumors about his knees blowing out and that’s why he’s stopped wrestling, pulling out of fights because of a lingering injury. Is this the end for stubby arms?
The man know simply as "Christmas Cheesesteak"
Might be
I hope with all my heart it isn’t true..

Serious question
I’m curious – why are you such a big fan of Sherk’s? He seems like an okay guy and all, but I’ve never found his fights compelling, and the whole PED thing really put me off him.
Don't believe a word I say, I don't train BJJ.

Pretty simple, really
He’s from Minnesota. I’ve watched him fight live on numerous occasions. I’ve been to his gym. I’ve met him multiple times (and he’s a really nice guy). And he’s one of the most undervalued fighters of all time (33-4-1 with wins over Griffin, Karo twice, Florian, Nick Diaz, Franca, Ghosn, Radach, Gamburyan), not to mention quite possibly the best 155 pound wrestler in MMA history. Honestly, I don’t get why people hate him so much. The whole steroid thing was poorly mishandled by the CSAC and, while other guys get popped and people conveniently forget about it, Sherk gets vilified for it constantly, no matter what he does. (I mean, the dude is obviously battling serious injuries and people keep shouting “sturoidz!!” like that’s totally plausible given zero reasoning). He’s one of the few remaining old guard and a good guy, and I’m going to be sad when he’s done fighting.

Fair enough
…though you know why he got vilified for the steroid thing: he never came clean. People are TOTALLY willing to forgive fighters (politicians, etc.) that make a mistake, own up, and move on. But we never got that from Sean.
You’re right that there’s no reason to think this is all about steroids. I’m certainly not suggesting that. But at the same time,
a) There may very well be some common thread connecting all of this, and that would be one thing that would make sense.
b) A look at the careers of other people who’ve been caught shows that there’s a surprisingly high rate of recidivism.

Re: Coming Clean
The lab that tested Sherk for steroids also found evidence of steroid usage in a cup of water:
Sherk presented stronger evidence of misconduct when, in a subsequent visit to Quest Diagnostics, a "water blank" was also shown to test positive for Nandrolone. Still, the CSAC was adamant in refusing to acknowledge contradicting evidence.
I mean dude could be roiding, any of these people could, but there’s some pretty compelling evidence that the CSAC/Quest Diagnostics screwed the pooch with his case.
Yep
I don’t want to get into a huge pissing match here with anyone (since people know my feelings on the matter), but they also tested his factory sealed Xyience supplements and told him those tested positive for Nandrolone. And the guy got a “half sentence”, meaning he was half guilty? What the fuck does that even mean?
I personally don’t believe Sean has ever used steroids. My brother used to train at the same fitness gym as him and, based on that and his well-known training regimen, nobody works harder to be in the kind of shape that he’s in.

That's the sad part
Sherk works so hard and lives what looks like frankly a very spartan life, even by fighter standards, to be in the shape he’s in. For a lot of people, that hard work is moot because of one sketchy drug test.
I wouldn’t even really call myself a fan of Sherk, but that’s a positive test from the era of testing that, by the CSAC’s own admission, was worse than no testing.
Sadly, the same thing seems to be happening to Arona.
=(

Did he injure himself signing with the UFC?
by John Nash on Jan 16, 2010 4:07 AM EST via mobile up reply actions 2 recs
LOL...he signed to fight at UFC 108?
Really, he has been battling knee problems since 2007-2008. He fought at Bitetti Combat and looked pretty bad against Eastman (blamed injuries). I’ve been waiting for him to fight stateside since rumors started in 2007 but nothing ever came out of it. Wish he could have fought in the UFC in his prime. Same with Gomi.

Sherk is 36, and I would imagine that he has had a lot of wear and tear on his body after fighting for as long as he has against some of the top fighters out there. I still see Sherk as a top Lightweight, and there are fights for him in Lightweight that are very intriguing.
If he can ever actually get to fight.
Man, I sure hope that this is just a bad string of luck that he can snap out of.
