So Ambriz is somehow a more competitive opponent because he’s lost to more notable guys more recently than Banks? Fascinating.

Without pain, without sacrifice, we would have nothing.

This

How is he better than the last guy again?

by cyke on Jan 15, 2010 1:29 PM EST up reply actions

He's not.

And this whole situation has a stink on it.

by woomikee on Jan 15, 2010 1:30 PM EST up reply actions

There's a small difference

We know this guy can take a beating and not get too severely damaged.

That’s about it.

I think this is a worse matchup IMO. I mean the guy has nipple rings.

Here is one with no man nipple at all. Also it hides his gut so he looks like a better prepared fighter.

Ambriz has lost to wrestler/grapplers: Monson twice, Barnett, Ricco, Tuchscherer, Christison all by stoppage. It doesn’t look like a competitive matchup.

I thought Brock Lesnar’s tattoo was stupid. This guy has one with his belly-button as the centerpiece?

by TLow on Jan 15, 2010 12:01 PM EST reply actions

Question – when was the last time Ambriz made 265? I don’t think he had to in either Monson fight, and he was 290+ in Dream.

Another thing that’s funny…according to Sherdog, Ambriz’s last opponent is 5’6 and 125 pounds, with a 7-30 record. I think there’s a fight finder error there. BREEN, get on this.

by Tim Burke on Jan 15, 2010 12:04 PM EST up reply actions

maybe it was changed after your post

but Sherdog now shows that guy at 6’1 and 330lbs. Though the 7-30 record is the same.

Needs to be fixed again!

Because Chris Clark’s first fight was (now) against himself. Of course, he lost. :) I think that fight used to be a loss against Raphael Assuncao, so I’m guessing maybe there’s some other Chris Clark who fights at 155. His record also changed to 7-24.

by mma_critic on Jan 15, 2010 2:53 PM EST up reply actions

My guess, there is a Brazilian guy whose nickname is “Chris Clark”.

I remember reading this cagepotato article about “10 fighters who should hang up the gloves” written in late 2007.

Ambriz’s name makes an appearance at #3.

He went through 2005 and 2006 without a single win, but he’s stumbled his way into a 3-4 record this year, notching victories over tomato cans like Richard Hale and Brian Peoples (who sport a combined record of 6-5 with wins over equally shitty fighters).

Also for what it’s worth, Nick Diaz’ name is on that list as well, which I found amusing given the other names on the list.

He turned down Del Rosario, because he’s smart enough to know that he needs to build slowly. So, if he’s trying to limit the level of competition while his career is in his infancy, then he should also decline the spot on a major televised card as well. Talk about selfis and self-serving.

by argyle on Jan 15, 2010 12:59 PM EST reply actions

Lashley by GnP

Lashley should really use these fights against these journeymen to work on his standup. If Lashley wants the quick win, he can just take Ambriz down and use GnP for the win, but Lashley wouldn’t learn anything or help his growth from doing that.

Scott Coker about Kimbo
"Is he a 21-year-old potential who has a tremendous amount of an upside or is he a short-term solution when we’re really in this for the long distance race?" asked Coker. "I saw EliteXC walk on eggshells trying to match Kimbo… did we really want to be in that situation where we were walking on eggshells to match someone? We just didn’t want to do it."

@Sherdog

Does anybody also found this amusing considering what they’re doing now with Walker and Lashley

Walker isn't a prospect, he has said he only wants 3-4 fights

and he’s doing it for personal challenge and charity.

Lashley turned down Del Rosario which would be a competitive fight, step up in competition, and worth being on the main card. This isn’t Coker’s fault, it’s Lashley and his management. I get the feeling that he won’t be getting much showcasing from Strikeforce in the future if he keeps up this act. Who does he think he is, hand picking fights? A fucking Cracie?

Which, yeah… Roger Gracie vs. Bobby Lashley. Book it, Coker.

Fights like this don’t bother me. Fights like this being broadcast as part of the main card on a major event by the #2 promoter in the sport bother me.

Is it any wonder that some people think MMA is just a bunch of untrained bar brawlers? When guys like Kimbo Slice, Jimmy Ambriz and Herschel Walker are getting broadcast time fighting for what are supposed to be the premier promoters in the sport, it’s hard to argue otherwise.

And people wonder why major networks treat MMA like pro wrestling rather than a real sport.

It is pretty darn obvious that Strikeforce is not interested in testing Bobby Lashley at this point.

by Timmy B on Jan 15, 2010 2:15 PM EST reply actions

Strikeforce is interested.

Lashley and his advisors? Not so much.

Strikeforce offered him a couple of really tough opponents (Del Rosario, Barrett) and Lashley’s team turned them down cold. Strikeforce can’t force him to fight legit prospects if he doesn’t want to.

OVERALL RECORD: 14-12-1

54-52-3

by Llewdor on Jan 15, 2010 2:53 PM EST up reply actions

Why do they do this? Pitting an ‘over the hill’ fighter on a losing streak basically with everything against him and not a shot in the world…against an overhyped ‘rising star’ just to give him the easiest chance in the world to win.

I know a much higher profile fighter wouldn’t take the chance and fight the unestablished Lashley because they would have more to lose. Couldn’t they at least match him against someone along the same lines?
