if buentello couldn’t, roy won’t be able to. Its not like he has a glass jaw, he just got fed to JDS too early

And while dos Santos was hurting him he wasn’t ever out cold. His chin is actually very solid.

High five!

Giving Shogun his props. I had the fight 48-47 Machida but Shogun put up a monumental performance and I am honored to have seen it in person.

I thought Fight Night 21 was the Versus card, with Vera/Jones and Dos Santos/Gonzaga. I thought Fight Night 22 was the card before the TUF 11 Premiere…. IDK I’m confused.

by KKamikaze on Jan 14, 2010 6:49 PM EST reply actions

It’s called – UFC on Versus: Vera vs. Jones. So UFC Fight Night 21 is this one now =)

Man, I love Struve but I have a hard time seeing how he wins this.

by moopwontplay on Jan 14, 2010 6:58 PM EST reply actions

Nope, for all Struve’s natural talent, Nelson is too much for him on the ground.

by AJB on Jan 14, 2010 7:08 PM EST up reply actions

Nelson's strength on the ground is control

not necessarily submission defense. If a scramble leaves him in a bad spot, he could get caught.

by Trysdor on Jan 14, 2010 7:32 PM EST up reply actions

This is a great first fight for Roy and a good step up in competition for Struve, but that face off pick just made me chuckle.

I’m rooting for Roy only because I want to see that asshole get DEMOLISHED by a top contender like JDS.

Roy Nelson by TKO

He’s going to overpower Struve on the ground.

by superflat on Jan 14, 2010 7:18 PM EST reply actions

If by overpower, you mean

use The Buddha to suffocate Struve prior to working some really weird-ass submission, I think you’re probably right.

Dammit. I like both these guys and don’t want to see either of them lose.

by thekiltedwonder on Jan 14, 2010 7:26 PM EST reply actions

nelson is a lovable dbag, but struve is the MAN. If we went back to the comments from the liveblog of his last fight, i remember every saying after the postfight how sweet he was.

3-5 years from now

I can see a Struve vs. JDS rematch for a title. They each should have at least 7 more years in their careers, and fans love both of them.

from my complete novice view point...

I think that struve might be able to get the leverage to reverse R2D2 on the ground… i think struve might be a surprise here…

by Beren on Jan 14, 2010 7:29 PM EST reply actions

on the contrary, i think their ground skills will cancel out, and nelson won’t be able to handle the reach… If Struve keeps improving as much as we saw him last time, I think he’ll take this and get to medium high HW contender status.

by Austin Martin on Jan 14, 2010 7:32 PM EST up reply actions

thats what i was getting @ i havnt seen roy dominate taller strong guys that have some decent skills on the ground; he smothers smaller guys who cant either over power his mass or leverage it to move him…

i see knees and jabs coming nelsons way.

by Beren on Jan 14, 2010 8:04 PM EST up reply actions

Guys with Struve's body type tend to have relatively poor upper body strength

See Durant, Kevin.

I don’t think Struve has the explosive strength to get the big belly off him.

by Trysdor on Jan 14, 2010 8:36 PM EST up reply actions

Well…Kevin Durant and his well covered lack of desire to work on his strength is a bit different from a guy in Struve whose body we’ve seen get bigger over the past few fights

Surprising and interesting match up. Nelson has good takedowns and will use his low center of gravity to drag this to the ground. Struve is good but I don’t think he"ll be able to get bowling ball Nelson off him.

Tidal forces

More excellent matchmaking

It would be a huge notch in Struve’s belt to submit Roy and I hope he’s worked on some of his wonky striking and gliding around on his feet. He’s got a totally underrated chin, is getting bigger by the card and if he can learn to use that length with some competent striking, he’s going to be a fucking monster. I’m going to make a ballsy, early choice here and say Struve by Bermuda Triangle (okay, I’m mostly saying this because I’ve been trying to get that to catch on).

I cant wait to see capt. flubber do his thing

I rooted for Roy Nelson throughout the whole ultimate fighter. I think there is no way Struve comes away with a submission in this fight. Roy Nelson is a jiu jitsu black belt.

by Lions1788 on Jan 14, 2010 8:33 PM EST reply actions

so is struve? is he isnt he must be close with 7 years bjj experience…

by Beren on Jan 14, 2010 9:52 PM EST up reply actions

He's also submitted a BJJ BB once already in his career

Mr. Mario Neto:

Mario obtained a black belt under the able guidance of Carlson Gracie. Most of Brazil’s top fighters hail from this gym. Some of the them were Murilo Bustamante , Paulo Filho, Vitor Belfort and Mario Sperry. He then joined the Top Brazilian Team and for two years trained with them. From there he fought in Russia. He also became the head coach at Wolfslair. Some of the ranks he has earned over the years embrace the Judo black belt, BJJ black belt, three-time Brazilian champion in BJJ, International Master Seniors BJJ, and the also heavyweight champion of the WAFC.

Neto was also submitted by Justin McCully

so I don’t think his BJJ translated very well to MMA ;)

by Scott Haber on Jan 14, 2010 11:00 PM EST up reply actions

If I remember correctly, Neto was pretty darn gassed.

So is Roli Delgado

Roy’s grappling credentials are much more impressive than Struve’s.

And yes yes, BJJ competition is not the same as MMA…but I still think there’s no way Struve comes close to submitting Roy. Then again, I would have said the same thing about Mackens Semerzier and Wagnney Fabiano, so who knows?

by Scott Haber on Jan 14, 2010 11:03 PM EST up reply actions

I predict that Struve's length

will be somewhat marginalized by Roy’s width. Which makes me chuckle a little bit.

I think Roy has better striking, wrestling, and jiu jitsu than struve but man is that reach advantage going to make it hard for him to show that. Tough fight for Roy.

Although i have been saying that Roy needs to start towards the top of the division and this fight is definately in the skill level range that i wanted.
