Junior Dos Santos vs Gabriel Gonzaga to Co-Headline UFC on Versus

The UFC made four fights official for the UFC's first show on Versus. Among those announced, is a heavyweight matchup between Junior Dos Santos (10-1) and Gabriel Gonzaga (11-4).
The fight was originally scheduled for UFC 108, but Gonzaga had to pull out with an injury, prompting officials to bring in Gilbert Yvel as his replacement. Dos Santos remained undefeated in the UFC with a first round knockout of Yvel, and will now face his original opponent in the night's co-main event.
UFC on Versus card so far:
Brandon Vera vs Jon Jones
Junior Dos Santos vs Gabriel Gonzaga
Sean Sherk vs. Clay Guida*

I dunno...
It’s hard to place the blame on Comcast when DTV not only wanted to move the channel to a different tier according to the wiki, but also didn’t even want to pay what they were already paying for the channel.

Looks like they are throwing everything they have at this Versus show. I’m sure they won’t put a title fight up there but it’s a great card nonetheless.
I hate Direct TV, but…

This is awesome
I know a lot of people might complain that it isnt a big name to truly test JDS but let’s face it all the big names are tied up right now and I would rather see him fight then to sit on the sidelines and wait.
Who is a better fight for him?
Gonzaga is one of the most well rounded HWs the UFC has. This is a great test for a guy who is still just 24 years old.

Sounds good to me; I believe he’s actually 25, but either way “The Gypsy” is the top prospect of the UFC heavyweight division.
I believe JDS said that he’d rather fight a different opponent rather than have his fight put off, so good to see that in a way he got to have his cake and eat it too, by both fighting regularly and still getting his originally-scheduled opponent.
I don't really think...
…that getting your face punched in by Shane Carwin and then beating a guy in his first UFC fight by kicking him in the balls as hard as you can makes you a contender. Dos Santos can certainly make a case since he’s been wrecking fools left, right and center, but Gonzaga? Nah.
The winner of Carwin vs. Mir is clearly the #1 contender, being that it’s for an interim title until the Vanilla Gorilla is well enough to smash faces again. If he’s not back in time for the winner of those two, the winner of Nogueria/Velasquez has a viable case for the shot at the interim belt.
I finish beers at 1:55.
i like vanilla gorilla
that should defintely be brocks nickname
but if JDS wins this fight he should get a title shot over the big nog velasquez winner hes done way more recently and beaten a higher level of competition
Looks like a frickin’ PPV card. I feel kinda bad for Spike.

Wow this is intriguing
This is a really strong card…it makes me wonder about the UFCs motivations especially with the Comcast NBC merger.
Yes they definitely are looking to show off with strong ratings and send a message to someone or everyone.
And I think we as MMA fans should be excited about that happening. If Comcast/NBC are looking to blow Versus up into a decent competitor to ESPN, they could look to UFC/MMA as a foundational piece of making that happen.
www.tapology.com | twitter @tapology
With the horrible decision-making at NBC the last few years
I’d wouldn’t bet on them being at all successful trying to have VS compete with ESPN
Goldie: "Michael Jordan-esque in his grappling skills is Travis Lutter."
Rogan: "No, no he's not. No."
I think MMA could get great ratings though
If UFC is willing to put big cards on network TV they get good ratings and as people learn that NBC sports or whatever has UFC they will watch…I wonder if this could also help with a WEC merger.
Assessing NBC’s decision making and it’s ability launch/grow other brands such as Versus is a lot more complicated than that…
Basically I hear what you’re saying, but don’t agree you can draw that conclusion. But soon we’ll see either way…
www.tapology.com | twitter @tapology
and, success is not necessarily defined as equaling or beating ESPN. just being 1/3 the size of ESPN would be a huge success.
www.tapology.com | twitter @tapology
And there are several smaller, but growing sports...
that ESPN pays negligible attention to that could help build Verses viewership. MMA and Soccer are two that come to mind.
Soccer
ESPN has been showing increasing attention to this…They picked up a deal with the EPL and La liga…They also showed the Euros and the World Cup of course…The counter point would be that they lost the Champions League which they lost to FSC, but I don’t see a Fox NBC alliance on that…
I think those are about the only two sports in any case.
Got to go with Dos Santos
I am a Gonzaga fan, but i’d put my money on Dos Santos. Gonzaga seems to easily maul the UFC new guys but then fade when he gets in with the more experienced names. (Apart from when he Cro Cop’d Cro Cop of course)
Meat Feast
RIP GONZAGA
but realistically, i believe this is a set-up to see how he does against a strong ground fighter.
by cagefightonacid on Jan 13, 2010 6:43 PM EST up reply actions
Gonzaga has all the tools to be a top-tier Heavyweight, but the problem is in his head. Against Carwin and Werdum, Gonzaga was winning the fight, and then he just suddenly loses. In all honesty, I feel that Gonzaga is in the top 5 of his Division as far as being well-rounded (not top 5 in rankings, just in being well-rounded), but he just can’t seem to beat fighters who are at a certain level. While we haven’t seen Dos Santos’ ground game, we can expect it to be pretty good, but Gonzaga may have his best chance at winning by taking this to the ground.
Damn right!
This card looks awesome. I’m really liking Dos Santos’ progression. He should be able to KO Gonazaga in the first.

I switched from Comcast to Verizon a few months ago and I couldn’t be happier. With Comcast I never saw download speeds faster than 250K, with Fios I can hit 2mb or higher. Also, with Comcast I would have to watch 1 out of every 4 ppvs online because their ppv service malfunctioned.
It’s gotten better, but we still have to call once in a while because the show we ordered just doesn’t show up. It’s pretty sad that something so unreliable can be so costly.

When I was living with Comcast
it was a very interesting thing. I could pay $50ish for a PPV in standard definition, or (theoretically, of course. Piracy is illegal and I in no way support any such actions) put a decent quality stream on the TV (via HDMI cable) and then pirate it the next day in 1080p without paying any more than standard internet fees. It boils down to getting similar to inferior product once or getting everything of the month for significantly less money.

That doesn’t mean there will be more restrictions on his travel.
before that court date, he had plead guilty to a felony. yet he was still allowed to film the movie in Canada, train in England, and fight in Nevada and Ohio.
I don’t get why everyone assumes that him being on probation will automatically add travel restrictions, especially when part of what happened that day was the felony disappearing.

There are a bunch of different companies (satellite and cable) that we can choose from. Each area has a different selection. But once you get one company, most people don’t like to switch. Each cable provider gets to choose which channels to make available to the customers. Some providers have different packages, so each person can choose what package he/she wants.
Direct TV has decided to stop carrying VS, so people who have DTV cannot get it without switching providers.

My brain says JDS, but I’m rooting for Gabe (as usual).
Guess I have a soft spot for fighters who have all the tools to become the best but fudge things up once they appear to be a rung or two from the top.
I still say, if Gabe can ever get the last one or two quality wins before he’s due a title shot, that he’d beat Brock Lesnar with ease. The problem, for him, is stringing together enough wins. He gets to the big fight, or at least the one before the title shot, and then falls on his face.
This time will be different. I hope.
I specializes in grammar fail.
im a Gonzaga fan too, and he is a monster waiting to be awakened. I believe he has all the tools to be a great champion, he just needs to be confident plus a good game plan.

I heard he never has a traditional type training camp, training specifically for X opponent. Simply just does the same training routine he always does. Kind of strange if true.
Really a lose, lost fight for Junior
If he wins everyone will point to “Napao’s” destruction at the hands of Carwin, Couture and Werdum. But with Gonzaga being a dangerous enough opponent, he could lose and then be years from a title shot. JDS needs top 5 fights.
what a waste
what a waste to have this card on Versus…
I’ll say what I said about this fight the first time, this is a great fucking fight for both guys. Gabe regardless of being snake bit in big fights is going to test what Dos Santos is made of and Dos Santos is going to test if Gabe is up for big fights. I’m slightly going to go with Napao on this one, I just think he has too much on the line to not win this could be a make or break fight for him. While Junior on the other hand can afford a loss and it won’t eliminate him from top contention after he’s basically destroyed his last 4 opponents either way should be fireworks.
By the 21st this card will be whittled down to Ludwig vs Fisher

Im a big Gonzaga fan. I love the guy…I REALLY hope he gets his mind right for this fight. If he does (and its a big if) he can win. I love Dos Santos too, but he’s young and will have plenty of time to be champion in the future. Gonzaga is getting older and I think if he loses this he’ll be demoted to gatekeeper status…unless Heath Herring comes back lolz.
