2009 Bloody Elbow Reader Awards: Disgrace of the Year
What a difference a small cup of urine makes.
On June 22nd, the California State Athletic Commisison released a statement announcing Josh Barnett testing positive for the anabolic steroid Drostanolone. Barnett was denied a license to fight, Affliction couldn't (or didn't) find a replacement for Fedor Emelianenko, and the card was canceled. Twenty-two fighters lost out on paydays. Affliction's MMA promotion folded. The shit hit the proverbial fan.
What makes the situation even more disgraceful? Barnett tested positive seven years ago following his victory over Randy Couture for the UFC heavyweight title at UFC 36. So, not only is he a dirty cheater, but he's bad at being a dirty cheater.
Full results after the break.

She has a black style.

Ubernoober- "It like two guy who just stand and swing for fence and try to knock each other shit out it awesome"
yeah, I don't like the things she said either
…but for someone to vote her for Disgrace of the year? I don’t know.

Yeah
Maybe because of the word “disgrace” but I can understand the implication. Embarrassment might be more sufficient, but I get it.

I think,
she’s more of “face palm” of the year, rather than disgrace.

I say these results should be high on the list next year.
Sylvia being dumb and getting knocked out is worse than Kyle effing Maynard fighting? Jose Canseco fighting a big kickboxer is worse than the greatest robbery our sport has yet known? An NFL star with a TMA background getting a fight against inexperienced an MMA fighter (just like on TUF, which we all crapped with joy ourselves at) is worse than a professional fighter going apeshit at a party and assaulting several people, possibly women, after weeks of documented alcoholism and statements that he wishes he was dead… and nobody helping him? Not one mention of Junie Browning? Hell, even Golberg’s commentary getting noted about Gus Johnson’s?
My vote next year goes firmly to “Priorities of MMA fans.”

Ugh...
My own inability to edit a sentence without putting all the words out of order will be in the number 2 slot for voting. Embarrassing…

who voted hendo at ufc 100 the biggest disgrace?
by kanodogg on Jan 13, 2010 1:22 PM EST via mobile reply actions
I didn't vote for that
But he said he was throwing in an extra punch to teach him a lesson or break his jaw…Something like that…So its a fair vote.
To shut him up
Is what he said.

wow is all i have to say
these are truly awful results, to think that people think a person trying to achieve his dreams after being born disabled would be a worse disgrace than nazi sponsors. Or that a knockout by a former heavyweight boxer was worse than junie telling the nurses trying to help them that he was going to assault them. This is fucked up shit, and i am extremely disappointed seeing these results. I don’t know if people voted in jest or something, but this is almost a disgrace.
to elaborate, this list should be included for next years vote.

From Josh Barnett's Twitter:
“Thank you very much! RT @BloodyElbow: 2009 Bloody Elbow Reader Awards: Disgrace of the Year @joshbarnett . I thought Sylvia-Mercer was the bigger black eye for the sport so to have us come in 1st and 2nd for disgrace of the year is a huge honor!”

Seriously?
I’m glad he finds humor in it..
Blackout612- "Wuts teh UFC?"
Ubernoober- "It like two guy who just stand and swing for fence and try to knock each other shit out it awesome"
So why did he headline it “From Josh Barnett’s Twitter”?
Blackout612- "Wuts teh UFC?"
Ubernoober- "It like two guy who just stand and swing for fence and try to knock each other shit out it awesome"
Yeah
I realize that now. I initially attributed it to my complete lack of knowledge regarding Twitter.

Nope. not a real tweet.
he’s trying to be funny by editing Joe’s “acceptance tweet”.

Sorry folks. I guess I should have been more explicit. I was editing the Joe Rogan tweet that Anton just posted in his twitter roundup…
Here’s the original tweet from Joe:
Thank you very much! RT @BloodyElbow: 2009 Bloody Elbow Reader Awards: Commentator of the Year @joerogandotnet http://bit.ly/5ok0F5... Schiavello is my favorite commentator so to have us come in 1st and 2nd for commentator of the year is a huge honor!"
I have to say...
These results are awful. Nazi sponsors, stumps fighting, and Rampage’s coaching should all be ranked MUCH higher.

I think we should just ignore the Nazi guys.
by Anton Tabuena on Jan 13, 2010 1:54 PM EST up reply actions
Ignoring Nazis has a history of not going well...
Then again, I guess we could just send the Inglorious Bastards to their HQ to handle things in the future.

Re: neo-Nazi sponsors — it’s not as disgraceful because of the quick shutout from UFC, WEC, and Strikeforce.
The stumps thing? That’s… his own fault, as evidently good of a wrestler as he is, it would have been more disgraceful if Alabama had had an athletic commission in the first place to go/no-go it… or DMX/Coolio vs. Eric Martinez.
They weren’t nazi’s they were just misunderstood :D
by who me on Jan 13, 2010 2:24 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Hey, I understand calling him a stump is a bit off color
But calling him handicapped really doesn’t give you the correct sense of exactly how FUBAR this thing was.
A handicapped fighter would be someone like Matt Hamill who I think everyone supports, even though his handicap does cause some issues and questions, like his inability to properly decipher the referee in his last fight due to blood in his eyes. These are issues that cause problems for an otherwise extremely capable fighter, these are things that can be overcome.
Not having any legs can not be overcome in an athletic competition based around physical combat. It’s just not possible, the rules are not made with it in mind, and even if they were it’d still be a really cruel joke. Let’s say we take another hypothetical fighter, but he has one leg. Are we fine with that? Is he allowed to wear a prosthesis in the cage? There has to be a base level of ability before we allow you into a ring, and if we as a community have a problem with the ability of one time champion boxers like Toney who we all agree would get destroyed, then we should have an absolutely massive issue with someone missing limbs.

All the people getting bent out of shape about the voting is really cracking me up. Its a write in internet poll of course there will be a couple of oddball things on it. Heck some of the worst disgraceful things this year just didn’t get much coverage so they weren’t going to get as many votes. Chill out, its the internet.
At least it seems that a worthy party came out on top, hard to beat destroying a entire event and killing a company with a cup of hot pee.

Dana’s “faggot” and “dumb bitch” rant was my lowpoint as a MMA fan this year.
"I’m not going to stop yelling because that would mean, I lost the fight!"-Kenny Powers

I am amazed that didn't even get one vote
It was certainly one of the most embarrassing moments that got picked up on by the mainstream media. Most of the stuff on this list completely flew under the mainstream radar, but Dana’s Hunt rant was all over MSM outlets.
