2009 Bloody Elbow Reader Awards: Commentator of the Year
For the second straight year, Joe Rogan takes home the Bloody Elbow Reader Award for Commentator of the Year.
What Rogan might lack in broadcasting polish, he makes up for in knowledge and enthusiasm for the sport. Unlike his partner Mike Goldberg, Rogan keeps up with the sport outside of the UFC and isn't afraid to namedrop non-Zuffa fighters during a telecast.
Rogan dominated the rest of the field this year in similar fashion to last, but Michael Schiavello will provide a tough challenge in 2010. Fans solidified Schiavello in the number two slot after taking over for MMA's resident zombie, Kenny Rice. It will be interesting if fan allegiance changes when Schiavello's given a full year of work.
Full results after the break.

schiavello
is the worst commentator i’ve ever heard in sports much less mma…. the only time i press mute is when he is ‘working.’ i can’t believe people like him.

I’m with you. At the end of a fight when he’s flipping out, I have to mute it a lot of times. Can’t handle it at all. The same sayings over and over and over and over again. And they are all bad.
“he dropped faster than a dress on prom night” or whatever… eghhh. give me goldies flubs any day over that.

I can’t believe 2 people voted for Mezger. He can’t even get the rules right half the time, much less have a lot of insight.

How did Gus Johnson get even one first place vote?

Schiavello
Schiavello is a strong #2 and I hope he stays there. He blows up way to much for any decent exchange or reversal. He’s at a 10 when the action only only calls for a 4. I would say that he seems more knowledgable than Rogan as he name drops bizarro or ancient fights all the time. It’s just his over the top garrishness makes him hard to deal with. Plus, Rogan is funny.

This is Awesome!!
WTB more of Schiavello in 2010.
Him and miller were quite entertaining on at the Dynamite NYE show.
Would love to see more commentators show that much enthusiasm during brodcasts.
Jeez
Rogan had to do so much to win this against the competition he faced.
/fuck Goldberg and blue mountain state
My prescription is for 'medicinal purposes' only
The joke that has to be made:
Frank Mir voted Miguel Torres as the best announcer of the year.
If Pat Miletich worked more, he’d be damn near the top. His commentary is fantastic by MMA standards, and I’d say is the most professional of anybody on this list.
"Someone is WRONG on the internet. What do you want me to do? LEAVE? Then they'll keep being wrong!"
-Randall Munroe
"Good night Irene, it's the big kaboosh, the big boom-shaka-lacka"
Love that guy lol, he’s crazy. Would love to see him in Strikeforce because Gus Johnson almost makes me not want to watch Strikeforce, even when they have a good card.
Isnt Michael Schiavello the guy with the Austrailian accent and who does the K-1 events??
"Everyone has a game plan, untell they get hit." -Mike Tyson
There’s a guy with an Aussie accent who does PBP work for HDNet fights. Might be related.

ive been begging for this forever
el guapo is by far the most entertaining personality in mma and hes a pretty good announcer the ufc should absolutely add him to their commentary team
My ultimate commentators
I’d take Rogan and KenFlo. Mir isn’t bad, but his head is too deep up his ass.

He did do a great job
But one event doesn’t even get a guy any vote, in my mind. Maybe for 2010.

What a stupid award
Nobody deserves any award because the talent is so terrible. Joe Rogan the guy that made it sounds like Machida v Shogun was a landslide
“Ewww nasty leg kick”
my personal favorite: “HE’S GOT A GUILLOTINE!!!”
You should dub over a live fight and put that shit on Youtube. You’re a shoe-in for 2010.

Schiavello is great, I remember when I first heard him during the Contender Muay Thai finale,he was awesome.
Mir was much more tolerable at WEC 46, hes getting better. Rogan > Bas > The Voice > Mir > Anik > Jim Brown > > the voices in my head > Gus Johnson

^ This.
Frank Mir is very underrated as a commentator. Knowledgeable and enthusiastic.
certified warlord
I agree
I got in to MMA by watching Wreckage reruns late at night, and I loved how Mir was able to break down what was happening. He was able to really educate me to the point that I, a completely green fan, was able to understand what was going on. He was also able to keep it fairly exciting.
Yeah, he gets biased sometimes, but I think that’s more of the exception than the rule; it only occurs when he’s actually friends with one of the fighters.
Michael Schiavello deserves some extra points to take into account the different atmospheres of the shows he is annoucing. The Japanese fans are way more subdued then the beer slugging, rowdy and extremly loud NA fans that Joe Rogan deals with at the UFC events. Schiavello’s over the top emotion is a much needed jolt to shows where a knockout of the night draws a few gasps and then some polite claps, and really livens up the broadcast for us spectators at home pulling the all nighters watching at 430am on saturdays.
