UFC Fight Night 20 Post-Fight: Gray Maynard Wants a Title Shot, but He Won't Use Cheesy Lines to Get it
"The gameplan and technique went out the window once I saw that dude across from me and I just wanted to throw. I saw his face and I wanted to fight. It was stupid but I hope you guys enjoyed it... I ain't gonna make a cheesy speech about students and masters. If they want it, I'm here for him. UFC if you want me to do it, let’s fight."
--Gray Maynard, takes a slight dig at Kenny Florian's speech, on his post-fight interview that didn't make it on the Spike TV telecast. Maynard is undefeated at 9-0, but has been criticized for being a 'boring' fighter, since all but one of his bouts went the distance.

You know, before the fight I thought Maynard was the more deserving challenger to BJ Penn, but that fight was so close I’m not so sure anymore. He squeaked by Nate Diaz in a razor thin decision. I’d be fine if they gave Edgar the next shot at BJ Penn and had Gray Maynard fight, say, Tyson Griffin in a declared #1 Contender’s match.

And that was his first problem
You don’t say you wan’t BJ’s belt. You say you want THE belt. Emphasizing that it belongs to BJ shows you have the wrong mindset.
Frank Mir on the other hand, regardless of outcome, was right to say to Brock and Dana: I want MY belt.

I never thought I would say this, but I think I would prefer to see GSP vs. BJ 3 over anybody in the LW division…..
I think a warm up fight vs. Mike Swick would be nice….. followed by a contenders match vs. Koscheck to fight GSP……
or just give him the title shot at mw vs. Anderson…..hahaha
You have a point there with GSP vs BJ 3
I like Frankie Edgar, but I do not believe that he could beat BJ. At best, Frankie could have a competitive fight against him. Maynard only further proves after this fight that he has nothing to offer BJ Penn as being any sort of threat to him.
by the lookz of this fight..
gray would get ass-raped by BJ…. Edgar iz definatley the right choice for the next contender..
"If I told you I was good, you would think I am boasting. If I told you I was not good, you would know I am lying" Bruce Lee
frankie edgar would get equally ass raped….. I don’t think the commission should sanction any light weight fighter to fight bj……its not safe….really

Me too..
Maynard did himself no favours tonight. A good win no doubt but surely not the kind of performance that will lead to a title shot..?
Hopefully Gomi can come in and stomp some heads and make things a little more interesting..

Give Edgar the title shot next, let Maynard fight Kenny and if Maynard wins he gets the shot after Edgar, put Griffin against Gomi and work it out from there

Id rather watch Penn fight Gomi even if he doesnt deserve it at all. It just seems much more interesting then maynard or edgar

1. Edgar
2. Gomi
3. Aldo

I hated the idea of Penn moving up before.
But I’d be ok with Gomi, Koscheck/Fitch, Alvez, GSP. Assuming he wins each fight before moving to the next. Is AKA + Alvez before GSP a brutal WW schedule? Fuck yes it is, but he’s gotten three free WW title shots before and those are all interesting fights. Plus, its more time for him to acclimate to higher weight and do it properly with Marinovich.

UFC take out your big check book and go shopping for 155lb fighter in Japan.
Penn needs a proper opponent.

“And I will laugh my ass off, when Aoki submits BJ.”
I don’t think so, bro. BJ will knock Aoki TFO long before Aoki would get a chance to submit him. Not even a guarantee that Aoki could submit BJ.

Yeah, dreams are funny that way.
But you should set an alarm so you can wake up in time to see BJ smashing Aoki in the face.

Lol wut, Aoki is one of the few that could sub BJ, why is everyone getting butthurt?
"You hit too hard, too hard, too hard..."
Could sub him on planet "Imaginopolus"
Not so much on earth.
Aoki is a small lightweight with a terrible record of fighting bigger opponents. BJ is a natural lightweight (though he could probably cut to 145 if he tried) who is undefeated at middleweight and came closer to beating a 225-lb Lyoto Machida than anyone except Shogun.

No. Aoki’s ground game is flashy, but it is nowhere near as technically sound as Penn’s. Aoki subbing Penn would be like Dustin Hazelett subbing Demian Maia.

I’ve been the biggest Gray Manard defender since I saw him handle Frankie Edgar, but I’m done right now. I see Gray getting the Okami treatment, where he gets to face some good guys until he loses. Gray almost lost the fight, because he was scared of Diaz’s BJJ, what is he going to do with a BJ Penn’s world champion BJJ? Oh yeah, and he would be lucky if the fight got to the ground without BJ knocking him out first. I say, Make Edgar v Penn, and Maynard v Florian/Sherk/Sanchez..
Standard Views about Beating Penn
I often hear that if BJ is ever going to lose at LW it will be to someone with the wrestling prowess to handle him like GSP did or the stamina to push him to the late rounds where his cardio gives out . The problem is that I can’t see anyone at LW with the size and power to pull it off. Even Hughes had a hard time taking down Penn at WW. Sherk got demolished. As for cardio – we all saw how much “trouble” Sanchez gave Penn as the fight progressed.
With those two angles dead (imo) I would actually like to see someone with the ability strike and keep the fight standing challenge BJ. Edgar might be something close to that kind of guy. I’d have to rewatch it, but I recall him handling Sherk (t rex arms…) on the feet but importantly kept the fight standing as well.
Of course, the problem with Penn at the end of the day is that he is great on the feet and the ground…so pick your poison. But I still think there are more strikes against the wrestling and cardio angle now than keeping the fight standing.
i really dont think it matters who fights penn next. diego sanchez had some mystery about him, even kenny florian. but i dont think anyone give edgar/maynard/florian/sanchez/huerta/sherk/guida/ben henderson/griffin/ … anyone else an honest chance at beating penn. i really think penn’s legacy is already intact, i think its time to move back to WW and fight thiago alves, koscheck, jon fitch, and maybe, just maybe GSP.
I'm old school hating Lesnar, I've been hating Lesnar since '08
yup
Its time for Penn to move up. As far as the ufc goes no one comes close to Penn in the LW division.

I think a healthy and recovered Josh Thompson
would be a better fight for BJ than anybody Zuffa can offer right now other than a motivated and trained Gomi. BJ vs. Alvarez, Kawajiri, and maybe Melendez are good fights at LW. I think BJ handily wins each of those, with some trouble against Alvarez, but those are what I see being interesting. Unless Zuffa picks up one of those guys, then Fitch, Alves, Koscheck time.

Maynard is boring, bottom line I cant stand watching his fights and I dont care if he wins. Watching a fight is about excitement and anticipation not watching a guy being timid and afraid and hoping to win by decission. I dont care if some purist say how they enjoy the technical aspect of his game because in the end it was still another boring fight. The general public including myself watches MMA to be entertained and until that guy wins a few fights in entertaining fashion deserving or not Im not gonna pay to watch him fight. Putting him against BJ Penn is an insult to Penn.
There was nothing technical
about what he did last night. I can deal with “boring.” I like Jon Fitch. Maynard was just bad.

Edgar or Maynard
It doesn’t matter. Neither one get to round three with BJ Penn.
i fear maynard would make it to decision with Penn. Penn is NOT boring, but he does pick his shots. as we saw with diego sanchez backing away, you can last till the end (unless he turns your forehead into a vagina). i think maynard showed last night he has very good striking defense, and that may be just enough to make Penn vs Maynard boring.

Maynard or Edgar, Penn beats both in the end. I just think Edgar would make a better fight and main event than a Maynard fight. My .02

I think Edgar would make for a more exciting, but probably shorter fight with Penn.
Maynard style might get him further in the fight, but at the cost of having an interesting or exciting fight.
Edgar at least has a puncher's chance.

Also: as somebody who was in the crowd
I didn’t boo the last round of Maynard/Diaz, but the people who were seemed genuinely pissed that what should have been an awesome grappling display turned into a boxing match between T-Rex Arms and Pillow Punches Jr. There were a lot of people yelling stuff about “I didn’t pay for a lame boxing match!”

"The gameplan and technique went out the window once I saw that dude across from me and I just wanted to throw."
He’s such an idiot. He even said in the show intro he wanted to knock Diaz out. He just didn’t succeed in his plan. Couture even called him out for acting stupid in the fight. He really doesn’t have a clue (Lame standup =/= Exciting fights).
As for the fans booing, I really didn’t think the fight was that horrible. In a way, I got pleasure knowing that Maynard [probably] screwed himself out of a title shot. As been been said above, for all the dumb quotes, the dumb nickname, the dumb brother, Florian always tries to prove that he’s worthy/ready for a title shot. Maynard is just coasting until someone beats him.
Maynard and Edgar should rematch. Winner gets the shot. Neither deserves it right now. I know that leaves BJ without an opponent but I don’t wanna see him go Anderson Silva on us and get pissed off having to fight the Cote’s and Leite’s of the LW division.
by IWillPartyHard on Jan 12, 2010 10:17 AM EST reply actions
Having BJ Penn fight and crush an unworthy opponent
Is much more valuable to the UFC than leaving him on the shelf while those two dingbats (Maynard, Edgar) fight more the undisputed title shot.
Agreed.
The UFC has a real problem if they follow that thinking because it would put BJ, GSP and Silva on the shelf for a long time waiting on a legit threat, that they haven’t already beaten, to come to the top of their respective divisions.
I’m glad I wasn’t alone in my opinion of Maynard last night. Completely underwhelmed is how I came away from that fight. And I kept picturing, over and over, what it would look like if he fought BJ. It wasn’t pretty.
Aoki/BJ would be an interesting fight, at least… though honestly, I’d be all for getting to see Penn eat Florian alive again. That would never get old for me.
enough already
Gray your standup looked terrible and I’m supposed to be convinced that you could knockout BJ? You surely aren’t taking him down. And enough already of other fighters mocking other fighters, just be yourself. Kenny is a classy guy and says some odd things but he could kick your ass.
