UFC Fight Night 20 Results: Aaron Simpson Outlasts and Outpoints Tom Lawlor

Photo by Dave Mandel via Sherdog

Many prognosticators expected Aaron Simpson to out power Tom Lawlor. Instead he had to survive a brutal and grueling war to get his split decision win.

The very funny Tom Lawlor came out and sent a message to Arizona Combat Sports by repeatedly tagging Aaron Simpson in the first round. But Simpson somehow survived the first round.

Simpson came out in the second shooting for a take down but got stuffed and ate more punches for his troubles. But about a minute into the round, Simpson got the take down but he couldn't keep Lawlor down. Lawlor dominated most of the round, but Simpson scored with punches towards the end of the round.

The third round opened with a furious exchange and both fighters scoring hard shots. Simpson got a major slam but Lawlor got back up and answered with a take down of his own. But Simpson followed up with another take down and got Lawlor's back and sunk in his hooks, working for the rear naked choke. But Lawlor fought him off and survived.

Understatement of the year?!?

This judges are damn near impossible to figure out. Lawlor was winning the first 4mins of the second round and cause he doesnt score clearly in the last minute the judges some to forget all the damaged he inflicted that whole round…wtf No way did I see simpson pulling out 2 of those rounds.

It’s a fight and you gotta finish it. Simpson had the tank to take that punishment in the first and control Lawlor till the end. I say, one more round and Lawlor wouldn’t have lasted.

Time for 10-8 and 10-10 rounds. Good Unjust Lord.

Tom Lawlor has just become one of my fav. fighters, who thought he would beat Aaron in the stand-up.

Also, i dont think Lawlor won the last two rounds, but i do think the first round was a 10-8, so it should of been a draw.

I could see a draw, if 10-10 or 10-8 rounds we’re used.

But nooooooooooooooooo way Simpson won.

if you can see it being a draw how can not see simpson winning if it was that close

Yes. That’s what I’m saying.

How I scored it

1st 10-8 Lawlor
2nd 10-10
3rd 10-9 Simpson

Lawlor was robbed, but he has to work on his killer instinct he had Simpson ready to go and let him off the hook in the first big mistake.

Lawlor got robbed and Simpson is an asshole, same goes for his crew… You know I’m speaking to.

by BSurely on Jan 12, 2010 4:47 AM EST reply actions

Simpson really needs to work on lateral movement and standup defense. I speculate that he knows his conditioning is top notch and will be able to recover.

I had it a draw. 10-8 in the first round, and then Simpon won the last 2, in my opinion. UFC was hoping to come out of this fight with the next big time prospect for MW, but instead they just saw two very good but still flawed prospects.

Lawlor got robbed

When will all the poor officiating come to an end???
Tom Lawlor won that fight hands down and the stinking judges give it to an aging boring fighter like Simpson.
As a fan of the sport I’d just like to see bad decisions curtailed as it’s somewhat out of control lately with way too many bad decisions.

I didn’t really consider the second round in doubt for Lawlor, and I thought the first was 10-8 as well. Simpson is made of iron, though. Lawlor literally took a year off his life in the first two rounds. Could not believe he survived that. Tom wore himself out beating on him.
