WEC 46: Varner vs. Henderson Post-Fight Press Conference

Jaime Varner - "I thought I was winning, definitely pushing the pace. I like to go forward. ... I heard Ben got some new boxing coach and all this stuff because we live in the same city. I was expecting him to try and trade punches with me and that wasn't the case. He had a good game plan. He used his kick to keep me away. I guess that's the M.O. on me; use your kicks, keep me away, that way I don't have to touch you."Video after the jump.
"A fight is a fight. I definitely came to fight. It seemed like Ben was doing a little bit more running. A little bit more countering and that's game plan. We all have our strategies and his was good."
"I was definitely trying to box. I was trying to punch and when that wasn't working , I figured I'll try and kick his legs out a little bit. Maybe he won't run so much and when that fell through I got caught in a guillotine. ... I started going out. I was trying at first and then it was just done. He had it in."

Seems like a nice dude and respectful fighter
“My opponent was running”
“I was the one fighting.”
“I just got caught.”

Well, he was backpedaling from his previous statements,
but still comes off like a dick. Yeesh.
Don't believe a word I say, I don't train BJJ.

Varner is beyond a d-bag, He’s the 155 Tito, whining and making excuses.

Varner
This dude let his true colors show in the post-fight interview. He tries to look like he is respectful with the high fives and “Good luck” statements, but you can’t hide his cockiness. So glad to see him tap. Hopefully it is a tap into obscurity.

yeah, i remember thinking when he beat rob mcculloch, that it would be nice to have a champ that was a bit more humble, but he ended up being even worse.

Sounds like he was looking for a brawl and hoping to catch Bendo with a KO shot.
What I’m seeing is Varner, a fighter, got beat by Bendo, a Mixed Martial Arts Artist.
I think that’s the major difference between champions and the rest of the pack. Those guys that say that they don’t believe in gameplans and strategies and that they’ll be fine wherever it goes because they’re just better at everything than their opponent will most likely never be champions.
Stand and bang is not a intelligent winning gameplan.

just to echo what has already been said
Jamie, he jumped on you then strangled until you gave up. How is that not beating you in a fight?

Cerrone
I’m thinking he probably gets the next shot at “Smooth” but I would love it if he and Varner had a chance to fight again.
What’s cerronrs next fight.. He should win another before title shot

A rematch between Cerrone and Henderson feels a little too soon for me. The thing that I just realized with Henderson though is that he has beaten a good amount of the top Lightweights of the WEC like Njoukani, Roller, Cerrone, and Varner. I personally want to see Cerrone get his hands on Varner.

Varner showed last night that he doesn’t have heart. Cerrone is all heart. And last fight I had Cerrone winning before Varner took the easy way out to win via DQ.

It wasn’t a DQ the fight went to the judges scorecards for a decision. The knee stopped the fight but it was late enough into it that it could go to the judges and Varner won a split decision.
Varner is a grade A jerk but that doesn’t mean he’s not a good fighter.

And last nite Varner tried the same type shit again, tried to play it like he got an eye poke or something, turned his back an went towards the cage after getting a big shot to the dome, hoping that the Ref would stop it or some shiet. That alone was enuff to make me wanna see him get whooped on hardway…dudes a biatch, thought for sure he was gonna do the ole’ Mouth guard trick..
How do you Know where Im at? If you dont Know where Ive been...Understand where Im coming from??
Since Varner was whining about Henderson not wanting to box with him.
I’d like to see him in the ring with the likes of Alfredo Angulo, James Kirkland, Paul Williams, Sergio Martinez, or Kermit Cintron since he wants to box so bad. He’d get KTFO by all these guys at 154lbs.
Oh boy. Some people just don't have the skill to deal with the public.
He might a good fighter but his people skills suck.

Any1 notice
Varner saying he was trying to strike and ben was trying to grapple…… even though he caught a kick shooting for a takedown???? seems like ben was trying to strike and when you went to grapple he stuffed your takedown and choked you out. Can’t wait for cerrone to destroy varner.
