WEC 46 Results: Benson Henderson Guillotines Jamie Varner, Unifies WEC Lightweight Titles

Jamie Varner put it best in the post-fight interview: Shit happens.

Varner looked sharp from the opening bell, after nearly a year out of the cage healing a hand injury.  Benson Henderson matched Varner step-for-step, providing a very close two rounds.  Varner looked to be the more technical fighter, using his boxing and wrestling to outpoint Henderson in the opening periods.

And then it ended oh so quickly.

In the opening minute of round three, Henderson stuff a takedown and locked Varner's neck in a guillotine.  Henderson quickly jumped into guard, and before Varner had a chance to react and defend, he was forced to tap.

Varner continued to cultivate his heel persona following the bout, complaining that he came to fight while Henderson came to grapple.

As I stated in the Live Discussion thread ..

I guess all those body locks and takedown attempts Varner was attempting fall under the "boxing" gameplan he had.

Was thinking that too.

The whole first round Varner wanted to grapple.

Thus is why he tapped so fast, of course. Really, he pussed out, and tapped to a pain choke. If he “came to fight” he sure as shit would have at least tried a slam. Not trying to fighter bash, but, damn.

its not a pain choke, its a blood choke, and slams just make it worse.

So fighting involves tapping like a ____?

Guillotine.

by iiowyn on Jan 11, 2010 9:18 AM EST up reply actions

He came to grapple....

and it worked, varner….

It worked

So embrace the douchebag persona and realize this is mma, not wrestle-boxing.

This is mma Jamie

you know mixed martial arts which means you can use everything not just boxing or kick boxing but wrestling, grappling, Jui-jitsu,anything. You want to be a boxer go box.

If you cant deal with a certain aspect of the sport you part of I suggest you find a new sport and way to be classy as always.

I love how he had no problem with Ben at the end of the first and second rounds hugging and high fiving but the moment he loses then he thinks Ben didnt come to fight.

maybe i'm bein' captain obvious here, but...

if you’re online enough to keep up on that kind of news, then you should already be able to sniff out these kinds of “huge announcements” a mile away (as nothing new at all), before getting worked up over them. not everyone who watches these shows is up on all the latest zuffa happenings, so i’m sure it was “huge” to some people.

And Varner, that is why people hate you

by bradlabo on Jan 11, 2010 12:06 AM EST reply actions

this is obviously pure speculation...

…but does anyone know varner’s current contract status? with all the sour grapes he was spilling leading up to the fight, along with the quick tap (and the nonchalant attitude about losing his belt), it seems like the guy isn’t too happy with his current situation. wouldn’t be surprised if he tried to jump ship to get on cbs, now that he’s free of any champion’s clause restrictions.

also, i’m sure they’re gonna do henderson/cerrone 2, for henderson’s first defense, but i’d rather see cowboy beat up varner again, and erase the controversy from the first fight.

by woooburn on Jan 11, 2010 12:10 AM EST reply actions

“Beat up Varner again” implies he beat up Varner the first time. He didn’t.

by iiowyn on Jan 11, 2010 9:17 AM EST up reply actions

I don’t think Varner wants to to fight Cerrone again. And I think being out for a year with numerous injuries might count for being “beat up”

by Lunchbox15 on Jan 11, 2010 9:47 AM EST up reply actions

Varner has no class. His shtick is old and tired. He should fight James Tomey if he just wants to stand and throw hands. Dream could promote it. It would be like Jose Conseco v. Hong Man Choi. Varner needs to go away.

by Caligula on Jan 11, 2010 12:15 AM EST via mobile reply actions

Varner said “I came to fight, he came to kick” not grapple, he was referring to the fact that Bendo only threw those roundhouse kicks.

Definition of irony:

Irony is the act of spending half of the first round in a MMA fight trying to sub your opponent and then complaining after you lose the fight by submission that your opponent came to grapple and kick, while you came to box.

Congrats Jamie Varner,

You just earned the worlds biggest hypocrite award.

by moonlapse88 on Jan 11, 2010 12:36 AM EST reply actions

YEA!! Ben brings back WEC Lightweight Belt back to THE LAB!!

Thats what I’m talkin’ about!!! Varner doesn’t make it easy to like him does he??LOL I see some are trying to stick up for Varner but he’s showing the poor character he’s becoming known for, being a sore loser. If he wanted to just box, go into boxing because in MMA we grapple as well as strike. I guess the difference between Jaime and the “Champ” is, one is better at MMA than the other.

I love that Varner had a guillotine on Henderson for like thirty seconds and got nothing and Henderson snapped it on Varner and got the tap out in two.

Not true at all

I missed Brown vs Morrison, but got to check out everything else.
I called that Henderson would have a “smooth” victory, and he did. Varner should just embrace his new found heel turn.

Benson is my new hero, I loved how he exposed Varner for the quitter that he is, he says he came to fight what a joke really as quickly as he tapped i’d say he came to tap.

by iiowyn on Jan 11, 2010 9:23 AM EST reply actions

Varner is a bitch, everytime he gets hit in the mouth he calls timeout. He was getting rocked in the Franca fight and out of nowhere called a timeout because his mouthpiece came out. After that fight i’ve always hated him, not to mention he did the same thing in the McCullough fight.

So aside from Cerrone

who else is in line for a title shot?

http://www.wec.tv/index.cfm?fa=fighter.AllFighters&did=5&LName=

My personal guesses are Ricardo Lamas and/or Dave Jansen. Any other names?
