WEC 46 Results: Urijah Faber Chokes Out Raphael Assuncao

After five minutes eroding his ring rust, Urijah Faber emphatically staked his return to the WEC cage.

The Sacramento crowd started hot from the opening notes of "California Love".  Faber responded in turn.  Raphael Assuncao matched Faber's speed and strength in a closely contested first round.  But from the opening bell in the second round, the fight was all Faber.

Urijah dropped the tough Assuncao twice.  In round two, Faber nearly ended the fight with a guillotine choke before Assuncao defended and escaped.  But after giving up his back in round three, Faber pounced, locked on a rear naked choke, and got the tap out.

Jose Aldo entered the cage following the bout, setting up a future title fight with Faber.

I thought that Faber would win, but not by a rear naked choke, so I am impressed. I am looking forward to Faber vs Aldo, but I feel that Aldo would take that.

I thought Faber’s speed would be too much for Raphael to overcome but in the end Faber gets the RNC … great fight, enjoyed it …… I’ll take Aldo if and when they fight.

Do you have the earlier ridiculous choke escape?

Faber's such a classy, good dude.

Happy to see him get a win. Very creative and entertaining fighter to go along with his great personality. I know a lot of people think he’s overrated, but he’s a class act all the way.

im the opposite, i think he is underrated but slightly not classy. but it was a good win for him.

How so? I’m not a huge fan of the guy or anything but he’s always seemed really respectful of his opponents win or lose and genuinely grateful to be where he is.

just a little too arrogant for my taste, cocky, etc. Nothing big.

Faber should beat Aldo

and Brown will beat Faber again and things will be right again in the WEC world.

by cyanide on Jan 11, 2010 12:57 AM EST reply actions

no he wont

aldo is way to talented and impressive, he’ll give faber way to much trouble in the standup and faber wont be able to take him down and try to gnp him to escape

also this is maybe the one time fabers gonna enter a fight with no speed advantage its pretty even with these guys

by milk72 on Jan 11, 2010 1:07 AM EST up reply actions

I’d bet my house on it being a very quick, rough night for faber if he fights aldo.

No if there, that fight is gonna happen.
