WEC 46: Live Results and Commentary

Photo

As with every major show, BloodyElbow.com will be here to bring you live results and commentary for WEC 46: Varner vs Henderson.  The live blog will start with the beginning of the Versus broadcast (at 9PM ET) so make sure to make Bloody Elbow your home for this event.

As always we have our one rule: NO SPOILERS! In the interest of not ruining anything from the undercard that may make the broadcast we ask that you do not discuss the results of the undercard in the comments until either the broadcast ends or the fight makes the air.

So again, join us for the show and share your thoughts as the event unfolds.

We're about to begin.

Mackens Semerzier vs. Deividas Taurosevicius Nice smack talk from both men before the fight. Then we get energy drink and video game ads. These names are making me dread liveblogging this one! We'll go with Mackens and Deividas They touch gloves.  Round 1 Deividas charges in, forces it to the cage. They're in over/unders, fighting for control. Mackens locks his hands behind Deividas' back. Grip is broken. Mackens gets slammed down. Deividas in side control, Mackens going for an ill-advised guillotine. Deividas stands, Mackens throwing up kicks. Deividas in guard, passes, side control. Elbows. More elbows. Woah! Mackens stands up off an interesting move from guard. Leg kick from guard. Deividas shoots, working a single. Mackens going for a guillotine, gets slammed again! Mackens with full guard. Tight guard by Mackens. The ref restarts them. Premature IMO. Deividas shoots again. Again Mackens threatening a guillotine. Bell rings. Bloody Elbow scores it 10-9 Taurosevicius. Round 2 Lots of feints from both fighters. Deividas is threatening some awkward kicks. Leg kick by D is answered with a head kick from Mackens. Deividas throws Mackens, countering Mackens' attempt at a judo toss. Deividas standing with Mackens back. Another slam. Mackens lands an upkick, then threatens a triangle. Deividas kicking the downed Mackens, bulls into his guard. Deividas trying to get the distance to land blows. Mackens keeping him close. Deividas has him stacked against the cage. Landing punches on the downed Mackens. Elbows. Working to pass but not getting there. Landing more shots from the top. Mackens rolls but gets nothing. Deividas gets side mount. Then back to 1/2 guard. Bloody Elbow scores the second 10-9 for Taurosevicius. Round 3 Mackens looking for the big strike. Body kick by Mackens. Deividas catches a leg and forces Mackens down. Mackens fights his way to his feet. Deividas charges in, Mackens stuffs it and is working for a d'arce. Nice reversal from Mackens, but Deividas is working for a heel hook. Mackens tries a heel hook of his own. Now Mackens is standing and raining down shots on a downed Deividas. Mackens is landing some shots. Now he's in Deividas' guard, passes to 1/2 guard. Mackens working a guillotine near the end of the round but he gives up top position and Deividas escapes. Bloody Elbow scores round 3 10-9 for Semerzier and the fight 29-28 for Taurosevicius. The official judges score it unanimously for Deividas Taurosevicius 29-28.

They're advertising the UFC Fight Night with Jon Jones and Brandon Vera which will be the first UFC event on Versus.

Mike Thomas Brown vs. Anthony Morrison Morrison: "I'm him, just black." Sincere handshake before the fight. Round 1 Brown keeping his guard up high. Head kick from Morrison. Brown coming in with his head down. Morrison firing punch/kick combos. Brown shoots in, muscles Morrison down. Immediately gets crucifix position and starts doing the Roy Nelson. Morrison explodes free but Brown gets back to mount. Now gives up his back. Mike Thomas Brown gets the tap by rear naked choke at 1:54 of the first.

Dave Jansen vs. Kamal Shalorus Round 1 Jansen circling to his right. Kamal stalking him down. Jansen firing combinations, Shalorus looking for the big right hand. Sharlorus lands. Jansen shoots, gets stuffed. They're swinging wildly but missing. Trading kicks. Shalorus with a nice leg kick. Jansen shoots, stuffed again. Jansen circling. Shalorus winging wild punches. Shalorus takes Jansen down. Jansen fights back to his feet. Shalorus lands a combination. Jansen is cut. Jansen charging behind a punching combo. Crowd chanting U-S-A. Shalorus tags Jansen. Stuns him. Shalorus lands again. Bloody Elbow scores it 10-9 Shalorus. Round 2 They're trading to start the round. Shalorus throwing bombs. Jansen coming in behind combos but not connecting. Shalorus lands again. Again. More ugly exchanges, few shots landing. Shalorus with a double leg take down. Back to their feet. Jansen lands a combo. Shoots, gets stuffed again. Jansen lands an overhand right. Stuns Shalorus. Back to trading punches. Shalorus lands a straight right. An overhand right. Shalorus looks tired. More winging punches  miss. Jansen shoots, gets stuffed again. Bloody Elbow scores it 10-10 10-9 Shalorus. Round 3 Shalorus lands to open the round. Another Jansen shot lands him in a headlock. Back to the feet. Shalorus drops Jansen with a straight right. Jansen survives but he's bloodied. They trade shots. Shalorus getting the better of it. Jansen shoots, Shalorus walks out of it easily. Shalorus gets a takedown. In Jansen's guard. Back to the feet. Jansen gets stuffed again but lands a punch. Then lands a knee. These guys are tired. Shalorus with another easy take down. If this guy were ten years younger he'd be a serious prospect. Shalorus drives Jansen to the fence. Jansen stands but still in a headlock. Bloody Elbow scores it 30-27 Shalorus. Unanimous decision for Kamal Shalorus.

Preliminary fight: Mark Hominick vs. Bryan Caraway Round 1 Hominick moving forward. Caraway with the take down. Hominick gets guard. Elbows from Caraway. Caraway trying to pass. Hominick plants his feet on the hips. Caraway throwing from the top. Eats an up kick. Lands more punches from the top. Back to full guard. Hominick gets a triangle! Forces the tap out! Very surprising. Mark Hominick by submission (triangle choke/armbar) at 3:48 of the first.

Urijah Faber vs. Raphael Assuncao Dramatic entrance for Faber in front of his home town crowd. Again with the corn rows. Round 1 Assuncao takes center cage. Urijah with a body kick. Assuncao charges in, drives Faber to the cage, has double unders. Faber spins, gets out. Faber lands a front kick. Faber bullrushes, gets pushed against the cage. Back to center cage. Faber lands a right hand. They clinch. They break. Faber with a left uppercut. Faber charges and eats a knee. Assuncao working for a take down from the clinch. They're trading punches. Faber with a left hand. Body kick. Leg kick from Assuncao. Tough round to score. Bloody Elbow scores it 10-9 for Urijah Faber. Round 2 Faber shoots, classic scramble. Assuncao in guard. Faber throwing elbows. Faber with a guillotine. Assuncao spinning around and around to escape. Great sequence! Faber kneeing the body. They're back to their feet. Assuncao landing punches. Faber seems to be having a hard time establishing range. Faber drops Assuncao with an overhand right! Down to Raphael's guard. Assuncao looking for an armbar. No go. Holding Faber close. Looking for a sweep. Faber landing elbows. Assuncao gives up his back, trying to work to his feet. Faber looking for the choke. They separate and trade as the round ends. Bloody Elbow scores it 10-9 Faber. Round 3 Faber shoots and scores a single leg take down. Assuncao gets back to his feet. Assuncao shoots. He's in deep working for a single leg. Faber fights it off. They're clinched up against the fence. Brutal clinch battle for position. They break. Faber coming forward behind punches. Faber lands a front kick but gets tripped down. Faber gets back up and drops Assuncao again! In Assuncao's guard. Faber lands an elbow. Faber gets his back! Faber working for the choke. Faber gets the tap out! The crowd goes ape! Urijah Faber by submission (rear naked choke).

Jamie Varner vs. Benson Henderson Round 1 Varner taking center cage. Clinches and slams Henderson who immediately goes for a leg. Varner elbowing the hamstring. Now Varner has Henderson's head in a front headlock. Varner kneeing the body. Varner with a guillotine. Really torquing it. Knee to the face! Henderson crumbles. With Henderson keeping his knees on the ground, Varner can only knee ot the body. Ref Herb Dean stands them up. Henderson lands a body kick then Henderson drives Varner back across the cage. But Varner reverses and gets Henderson's back. Now they're clinched standing. Bloody Elbow scores it 10-9 Varner. Round 2 Varner again seizing the initiative. Varner charging in behind punches. Leg kick by Varner. Lots of feints. Henderson seems flummoxed. Henderson charges in behind punches and kicks. Varner catches the kick and slams him down. Henderson charges again. Henderson shoots, no go. Varner firing to the body, pushes Henderson to the cage. Very hard round to score. Bloody Elbow scores it 10-9 Varner. Round 3 Varner again claims the center of the cage. Sherk’s boxing is much better than this. These guys are throwing the kind of looping hooks that you throw if you haven’t trained standup enough and you rely on your instincts.

by TruthSeeker1223 on Jan 10, 2010 10:25 PM EST up reply actions

The trouble with Frank Mir is that he does no prep regarding the individual fighters and match-ups. If something happens that strikes his interest, he might speak with some authority on what is happening. Or he might take a shine to one competitor mid-way and just focus on that.

That said, he is better that most of the other color guys, but—similarly to some of his fighting career, oddly enough—he just doesn’t live up to his full potential.

Because the shit was not formally announced, we all heard through the grapevine…

And haven’t you learned, the “hardcores” don’t amount to much in MMA, they’ll step on our balls all day if they see fit.

If Faber strikes with Aldo with that quick one shot style, he’ll get eaten. If he sticks to lightning fast shots and ground and pound, he has a solid chance of victory.

Not that I condone facism or any ism for that matter. Isms are in my opinion, not good. A person shouldn't believe in an ism, he should believe in himself.

I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me". Good point there, after all he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. Wouldn't change the fact I have to bum rides off of people.

Brown looked slow as fuck compared to Aldo, while Faber will make Aldo react a lot faster and I think that gives him a great chance of getting him on his back.

One of my personal favorite uses of profanity. Example of my close second favorite: Tito’s excuses after the Forrest fight were douchetarded. Varner acted like a douchetard after this fight as well.

Yeah... but

how well do you think any of the WEC guys would do… anywhere else? Njokuaki with a better sprawl would be a good upper/mid tier fighter. Henderson is a glorified Guida with submissions. Varner has UFC level talent and Filho level mental game. Cerrone also has the talent, but starts too slow and can’t wrestle well enough. I think Josh Thompson, Kawajiri, Aoki, Alvarez, and Melendez can soundly defeat any WEC lightweight. Put them up against BJ, Florian, or Diego and it’s not looking any better.

That remains to be seen

These guys are all fighting one another, thus, you can only compare them to one another. Varner, Cerrone, Bendo and Njokuani could give a lot of guys fits and could do some serious damage. In fact, I’m least confident in Bendo, and he’s the champ now.

True about them fighting each other

but they don’t look great doing it a lot of the time. I also agree with you on Henderson. The way he shoots and would just kinda sit there if he didn’t get Cerrone down looked really amateur. The PRIDE fan in me was waiting for him to eat a knee to the dome. His takedowns aren’t remarkable and he’s successful on little more than heart and constant pressure. Also, his submission defense is nothing more than being really fucking flexible.

Cerrone also has his issues. His jiujitsu is good, but his wrestling is really lacking and he can’t get a fight down on his own accord. His striking gets very predictable, and I’d like to see him vs. Njokuani to test how good he really is on his feet and at transitioning the fight to the ground.

Varner has all the credentials to be a fantastic MMA fighter. But he also has way too much quit in him to beat a top level talent. He’s worse than Gonzaga under pressure.

Njokuani has a ton of power, and is a very competent striker. The way he found his range on a head kick perfectly against a fleeing Horodecki impressed the fuck out of me. Unfortunately, he’s only a year removed from getting worked on the ground by Bendo. He needs a strong scramble and submission defense. Until then, he’s a better version of Melvin Guillard with less cocaine.

My main way of critiquing where they fall in the world of MMA is wondering how they’d do against Clay Guida and Joe Stevenson respectively. Then running through even lower tier fighters and asking the same question. Henderson vs. Sotiropoulous [sp?} or a similar submission fighter doesn’t sound promising to me, and Hendo has already beat the other three of the top four fighters in WEC.

It’s a pretty safe bet tha tif you unleashed Guida or any other solid LW in the WEC he’d be holding the belt real quick, and probably keep it a long time.

The general trend for WEC fighters going to the UFC has been to barely tread water in the UFC. Carlos Condit went from a massive win streak to two split decisions; Brian Stann probably came within one fight of getting cut from the UFC. Cantwell got cut. Which is not to say they can’t make waves at some point, but there’s clearly some big fish/little pond shock hitting the guys who have made the leap.

I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me". Good point there, after all he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. Wouldn't change the fact I have to bum rides off of people.

It's competitive

And is filled with quality young prospects. I think it’s a very good division that always puts on enjoyable fights.

Anderson. They also make it look like Forrest didn’t freak out.

Well that explains everything

You get your ass kicked, and Junior freaking Seau is in your corner?! I’d freak out too.

Maybe, thats a fair guess. I also read that he is about to be a father for the second time and that leads me to believe he might need to take some fights in order to get paid. (Granted a gold medal and the endorsements would pay well one would think.)

Can anyone actually confirm Kamal's age?

Wiki has him listed as being 32. Will be 33 in August.

I know a guy who trained with Kamal. He didn’t blink when they said he was 37.

Very surprising. Mark Hominick by submission (triangle choke/armbar) at 3:48 of the first.

Why was that surprising??

The machine has a very solid ground game ….. most never see it cause his stand up is excellent and most wins come by way of KO.
Great fight overall with Mark showing off some ground skills
The Machine wins !!!
