From BloodyElbow.com, Welcome to 2010

1195613_new_year_2010_mediumNone of know what the future holds for us. While we have plans for our individual lives and for BloodyElbow.com, it's awfully difficult to predict outcomes far in advance.

I do, however, know where we came from.

2009 was a key year of change for this site. It was this year when we definitively asserted ourselves as an online leader in delivering MMA commentary and news. Our traffic was already respectable heading into 2009 and over the course of 12 months it more than tripled. Just when we thought we reached our zenith and plateaued, the next month would shatter our expectations. How fitting, then, that we ended 2009 with December as the highest traffic record for any month since the site began.

2010 will present some changes, some noteworthy and others not. Per usual, I expect new features to be introduced, staff changes and dozens of other small adjustments. I am certain, though, that no matter what we are up for the challenge. Pressure and stress are the ingredients of our success.

I wanted to take this time to publicly thank the staff here for their unbelievably successful efforts this past year. I will say this openly and without equivocation: I would put the analysis and quality of work from the staff here against anyone else covering MMA any day of the week. They have definitely proven themselves to be capable of every task asked of them. To each of you I say: thank you from the bottom of my heart. You are a joy to work with and you all make me unbelievably proud.

A special thanks goes to Nate. Without his herculean efforts this past year, I likely would not be writing such a positive year-end piece.

And, of course, thank you to you, the reader. We appreciate your traffic, feedback, comments, emails and fanposts. I know I speak for the entire staff when I say we value your patronage and greatly enjoy your company.

So where are we going in 2010? I honestly do not know. I didn't know all of this was going to happen when we were headed into 2009. But I know no matter the challenges and no matter the responsibility, we'll be there to cover it as best we can. We hope you'll continue to join us for the ride.

Welcome to 2010. Here goes nothing.

I would like to thank crinow for all of his reading efforts this year. It wasn’t always easy, but he remained committed. In fact, there was this one time when he had an eyelash in his contact lens. Rather than walking away from the computer, he just continued to blink-never takings his good eye off the screen. He’s a true gamer.

since before sbnation I think. I remember having to convert my account, but not sure when it was. I became aware that BE existed right after Luke did color at MMAC in DC. I had front row ring side for that show and Found some of Lukes coverage before the show so I would know more about the fighters. True story, after coming here to get info on the fighters, I avoided it because I thought the name was really lame. They slowly won me over because Kid Nate embraced me disagreeing with him. I think my first post was something like “Kid Nate, you are dumb, here is why…” Nate’s response, “no need for name calling, create a post with the counter argument.” The post in question, and I forget the topic other then it involved Zuffa, went on the front page.

I've been reading BE since Luke defected from Mad Squabbles and took over here (May '07)

My first actual post was in a post on gambling where some guy named mikeypatriot argued they were doing it wrong, and when they told him to back up all his talk, he published a series of articles on it that led to him (Fagan) becoming a full-time staffer (Feb ‘08). I loved how the guys running the site weren’t making themselves immune to criticism and rewarding quality posters. I lost my original post count when SBN completely retooled their site to this format, though, and didn’t pick it back up until fall ’08. Though I usually loathe posting in forums & the like, this has been completely worth it.

Yeah, I was the guy in those gambling articles that argued with Fagan that you can’t make money gambling. I still think that the risk is too great. Sports betting is vulnerable, but I still think there is too much uncertainty in it to make any bet that is not for fun.

I think it’s like professional poker – it’s easy to get shafted in the short-term because of the randomness, but possible to profit overall. You just have to put lots of research over many events over a long period of time, and that’s hard to do well.
Given how bad I am on MMA Playground, I’ll stick to betting funny money.

Its worse then poker. In poker you can calc the odds easily. In sports, a guy may be injured and a bookie may know it and you may not, then the line looks really good on him and you take it without knowing all the info. Also, if there is point shaving or a ref in someones pocket, you wipe out a large chunk of profit. There are too many unknowns.

Lurker for a while before signing up May 16 2008. Can’t believe I’ve been coming here for almost two years now, from work and home. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry at the fact that next to my girlfriend, BE is where I spend most of my time. BE can be really rewarding most of the time, but sometimes she can be a bitch, lol.

I love me some Sexyama!

Happy New Year to all the BE staff and the great readers here that make the comment section truly worth reading.

I kept thinking by checking out the sitemeter at the bottom of BE that I could make some grand hypothesis about the growth rate of MMA as compared to BE’s traffic. However BE has been growing at such an astronomical rate that my only hypothesis has been I found one awesome MMA website.

Just BE.
