Sherdog Prospect Watch: Bryan Travers:
http://www.sherdog.com/news/articles/sherdog-prospect-watch-bryan-travers-18116
Travers began his MMA career as a pure wrestler. He also tipped the scales at more than 200 pounds. In, 2005, he signed to fight another debuting competitor at a Gladiator Challenge show. Thanks to injuries and last-minute changes, Travers instead faced an infinitely more experienced foe -- Anthony Ruiz, who was 9-5 at the time. Travers choked out his larger opponent in a little more than three minutes.
WW: Shamar Bailey (9-1):
Hometown: Indianapolis, IN
Age: 26
Height: 5'10
Weight: 170 lbs
Background: Wrestling
Accomplishments: Reached NCAA Division III national tournament (1st athlete in school to accomplish that.)
Background Records: Highschool: 32-0.
Feature On Shamar Bailey:
With a greater commitment to training, Bailey won his first five professional fights to earn a slot at a Revolution Fight League event against a Las Vegas-based fighter named Waachiim Spiritwolf in Louisville, Ky. Not only was the fight for a title, but it was the first time Bailey traveled for a bout and the first time he would appear on television.
Again, he didn't disappoint. The December 2007 event was Bailey's sixth consecutive win to start his career....
There's just one fight that sticks with Bailey, and it was his only loss. In April 2008, he agreed to defend his RFL title against Roger Bowling, who at the time was a firmly built, 2-0 rather unknown fighter from the Cincinnati area.
"He never touched me while I was on my feet," Bailey said. "He came at me, I backed up, and I slipped. He did what he had to do, he hit me a few times, and the ref stopped it.
"My grandma could hit me a couple times if I slipped."

http://www.sherdog.com/news/articles/sherdog-prospect-watch-bryan-travers-18116
The 11th of 13 children raised mostly by a single mother, Woodley entered the world to an immediate struggle to survive. His father was out of the picture by the time he was 10, leaving his mother to work double and triple shifts in order to keep the family afloat. Woodley oftentimes had to fend for himself. Needs sometimes went unmet. They say iron sharpens iron.
I learned a lot, having that many people in the house with limited resources," Woodley says. "I think it made me a better person. My dad wasn’t around. I used that to fuel me. I was always in athletics. I didn’t have time to wonder, ‘Where’s my dad at?’ I learned resilience, endurance and how to push through stuff.
Still, the lure of gang life proved strong in his native St. Louis, and he soon succumbed to its seduction. His grades plummeted, and he found himself under a 90-day, fight-related suspension that forced him to miss an entire semester of high school. Odds were not in Woodley’s favor. He seemed ill-prepared to escape the bonds of his environment, but he threw his energy into wrestling and slowly but surely pointed his life in the right direction.
...
Woodley persevered, earned a four-year degree and became the first member of his family to graduate from college. Balancing fatherhood with training, he plans to continue working toward a Master’s degree in Public Administration at Southern Illinois University, where he also serves as an assistant wrestling coach. Woodley connected the dots in his personal life, too, as he reconciled with the father who left him in the rearview mirror as a kid. Faith guided him.

The arrival of Bradley will add a little more depth in the ever growing Strikeforce 170 and 185 pound divisions.

I like Strikeforce as much as any other good MMA organization, but it is because of this list that I really want them to succeed. It kind of sucks for them to be at war with the UFC because by all accounts, it seems like they are doing good for the sport of MMA. There are some pretty good to great prospects here, but of course promoting them will be difficult. I am guessing that we will see these fighters on the Strikeforce Challengers Series (which at the very least introduced many to Sarah Kaufman). I can easily see some fighters on this list be in the UFC or main card of Strikeforce in the near future.

Good list. But it will take a lot of effort to promote these guys. TUF gives the UFC a huge advantage to breaking in new talent for the fans.
they do have their Challenger Series, but granted, it doesn’t get as much exposure as TUF does.
I personally wanna see how cormier does…
and i know it won’t happen, but wouldn’t it be cool to watch Cormier vs Mayorga? Neither have much experience aside from their normal background, and both are gonna make their debuts.. Olympic wrestler vs Boxing world champ. Kinda reminds me of the old school UFC matches. haha. :)
(although Cormier is younger, and he’s training with the best MMA guys, while Mayorga will uhhh…..)

Your definition of prospects seems to be a little loose...
you include a lot of guys who are veterans who have just not yet become big name fighters. A prospect isn’t simply a guy who fans don’t know about.

Actually… “prospect” can hinge on the fact that they haven’t been hugely successful in the public eye or within a major MMA promotion. They haven’t attained belts that have huge meaning such as that of Strikeforce. Most of those guys are prospects. It doesn’t mattter if someone’s 11-1 at all.

Nah...
That’s like saying that a 33 year old ballplayer who has been moderately successfull in AAA ball is a prospect. I don’t roll with that definition. Bao Quach is no longer eligible for “prospect status”

If you notice, the first set of fighters I list are prospects. The second I labeled “seasoned” prospects, which means they having gotten much publicity or acknowledgement. I do agree that Quach is a bit of a veteran, but his late surge as a fighter is something worth acknowledging.
Understood...
I see the separation now and it makes more sense in my stickler definition of the term prospect

With that being said, you can be a 33 year old rookie if you have never been called up to the big show. Baseball has this all the time. =)
33 year olds get called up for the first time “all the time”? No. While I agree that a guy could possibly be a “prospect” at 33, this is a bit of a stretch. It’s just wording though, so it’s not a big deal to me.
Quach should just be labeled a veteran. He’s fought in Affliction, EliteXC, ICON, etc. Strikeforce is basically the equivalent to those, not really a step above. He’s not getting “called up:”

Brent is basically saying that if you are in the minor leagues for a few years and finally get called up.. you aren’t much of a prospect. I can see the comparison, and it works. Micah Hoffpauier, Chicago Cubs… he’s been in the minors for a LONG ASS TIME and he comes up to the big leagues and hits for all sorts of power… yet most casual fans never heard of him, so they assume he’s a rookie prospect. Far from it.

Lots of interesting names......
I just wonder if they have enough fights for all of them, along with the bigger names they have signed. Should be interesting to see how many cards they will have next year. Because they have been signing alot of guys that need to develop or are developing that they need to get into fights to fill their roster with more legitimite fighters. I am assuming they have a plan to do so for the coming year.
This is much different from the Affliction model where Affliction signed many established fighters and had them fight each other. At least with seeing a list like this, it does indicate that Strikeforce is thinking about its own future.
Absolutely. Snatching up the homegrown talent and putting on shows is where Strikeforce excels, having so much experience as a regional promoter. They are definitely in it for the long run and are NOT going to over bid for fading MMA talent.

I was a bit unsure about him. I know he fought in SF last, haven’t heard much from him since. Either way, I love to find an excuse to tell his Vale Tudo match against Anderson Silva.

Good list
Seeing prospects like the ones mentioned, fight to determine who comes out on top without having to sit through 40 minutes of “reality tv” and property destruction would be great. They have a diverse background, which should make for some good upcoming fights.
Thats what the Challengers show is on Showtime. It is like TUF, except actual fights and not a reality TV program. Also, there are GP’s heading our way, where a ton of fighters will get to fight each other. We just had Devela vs Rockhold in the last Challengers show, and we will get Cummings vs Kennedy in the up coming show.
Nice
I wish them luck, and the brains not to hire anyone named “Shaw”.

Gotta tell you
I was very disappointed with Feijao’s last fight. Huge potential, great camp… what went wrong?
He had his opponent change 2 or 3 times, and lost interest in it. He really didn’t take Mike Kyle serious. I really think we will see the real Feijao in his next fight.
hey man i just wanted to say this is a great article. mad props for the time and effort it took to make this as well as it is. i saw a lot of people criticizing you pretty harshly but damn its not like you are a part of the BE “writers and editors staff” any way mad props i love it!! btw about feijao i know what you mean about the taking mike kyle lightly and losing interest… he was supposed to fight babalu for the title and before that even had another opponent before eventually being changed to kyle. i put feijao/kyle 2 in the thread title “rematches that should happen in 2010” cause i think a rematch could be fireworks
You should do some PR for Strikeforce Supe, like for real. I’ve learned more about who Strikeforce had in this fanpost than anything Strikeforce/Showtime has ever sold to me.
A suggestion
Next time you have a post with this much info could you put most of it after the jump? It takes forever to load the fanposts on my phone.

Cormier is the one obviously everyone is watching. But I think everyone should also focus on Tim F. Kennedy. 3 time Army Combatives champ. Only two losses – once to Scott Smith in his first fight and the second to Jason Miller (after he’d beaten Miller in an earlier fight) while still serving full time in the Army. Pretty impressive. And his background should be incredibly easy to market.
Finally
Got around to reading this. Damn good work Supremacy. That’s a lot of great talent right there. I wonder with the great success of TUF how hard would it be for Coker to sell CBS on a 1 hour TUFesque style show? That’d be all kinds of awesome!

They definitely have the young talent to do this, but I figure they will do one of two things. Either have a GP where all their young talent faces each other, or get a TV show to feature them. MTV’s Bully Beatdown currently gives some of their fighters some air time. Mayhem, Shields, Alvarez, Murphy, Huen, etc have all benefited from it.

Yeah big ups to Mayhem and BB for showcasing outside of UFC talent. If anything Strikeforce and Coker just need to have one HUGE reality show season and that be the end of it. Strikeforce gets exposure on Nat TV. The upcoming talent gets known and current champs/ SF Stars (Mousasi, Diaz, Melendez, Shields, Mayhem, Cung Le etc do cameos throughout each week.

Yeah. Bully Beatdown just had Shields, Arlovski, and Alvarez this season. That is pretty nuts. Burnett may work with them for something else. Just watch. There is already a reality TV show for female fighters in the works, which was scheduled to be shown on NBC.
