UFC 103 Conference Call: News and Notes

I_cfc_medium

Promoted from the FanPosts by Kid Nate.

The UFC 103 Conference call has just ended and the most notable quote came from Mirko Cro Cop when asked about Fedor:

"I like Fedor as a fighter, as a man, I don't want to insult Fedor, but I don't understand his attitude -- I don't know him well enough to say anymore, I don't know if someone else controls him. I don't know. I don't know the situation. But I really don't understand why he doesn't want to enter the UFC. Definitely the UFC offered him the best possible deal, to pay him much more than Dream can offer or Strikeforce can offer, but he's just refusing to go there. I don't know why. I think he should take the challenge but why, i don't know. I don't think he's afraid, but I think he wants to keep his perfect record, maybe he thinks the UFC is too tough. I think he should come. Why he's not there, I don't know."

News and notes from the headliners Vitor Belfort, and Rich Franklin:

  • Rich Franklin says he's willing to fight at 195, 205, or drop to 185, whatever the UFC wants.
  • Vitor Belfort training at Xtreme Couture and is already at 195 pounds.
  • Vitor Belfort: "I'm very excited to be fighting back in the UFC where I started."
  • Rich Franklin: "At this point in time, I'm interested in putting on exciting fights for fans" if a title fight comes along great
  • Rich Franklin says he hasn't really thought about returning to 185 if Anderson Silva loses the title or gives it up.
  • Rich on fighting Vitor Belfort instead of Dan Henderson: "I think this is the more exciting fight for fans" but says he still would like to fight Dan again.

News and notes from Co-Headliners, Mirko Cro Cop and Junior Dos Santos:

  • Cro Cop: "Junior is definitely one of the young lions in the UFC... it's going to be a tough fight."
  • Cro Cop: "If everything goes well, I expect to fight for the New Year, the beginning of January for the next fight."
  • Cro Cop: "I think I underestimated the cage... I did a lot of improvement (in techniques specific to a cage)... I feel much, much, much more comfortable now in the cage... I think I am on the right way, just like I used to be in my old days"
  • Cro Cop: "I'm staying at the UFC. That's where I'm happy at... I think true fighter should fight in UFC... UFC is main on the MMA market today. I think my place is to fight in the UFC... (UFC) is the only one that can offer me the excitement and the challenge... UFC is only global (MMA) organization"
  • Junior dos Santos says his goal right now is to be considered one of the best in his weight class.

WAR CRO COP

So happy to hear he’s staying in the UFC and recognizes they have the best fighters in the world. I want the Cro Cop of old to shake up the HW division a little bit and go on a title run

by 05vette on Sep 8, 2009 2:49 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Except for THE best fighter in the world.

With Fedor

it would have done 8x that, easily. Just ask Affliction.

•Cro Cop "I don’t know why (Fedor) doesn’t want to enter the UFC… I don’t know why… I think he should take the shot, but I don’t know

Really, that’s odd because……

conference call is done.. :)

…added a more detailed quote on what mirko said about fedor.

I think he wants to keep his perfect record, maybe he thinks the UFC is too tough.

LOL…

1) He doesn’t have a perfect record.
2) LOL at the quote in general.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Sep 8, 2009 3:26 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Undefeated doesn't necessarily equal perfect

and he has a loss on his record, so clearly he’s not undefeated.

He knew the rules of that contest going in: if you get injured, you lose. He lost.

I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.

by Llewdor on Sep 8, 2009 3:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think the elbows

are one of the reasons Fedor skipped the UFC.

by Riney on Sep 8, 2009 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

His one loss is from a cut that stopped the fight 17 seconds into the first round. Not a KO, a cut.

He is, for nonbullshit purposes, undefeated.

by toxic on Sep 8, 2009 4:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

His only loss was to Arona, but the rules in Rings were something like that: “it’s dark in the room so the pale guy always wins”

by dancingChicken on Sep 8, 2009 4:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

How is that undefeated?

Getting stopped on cuts in Rings was a loss.

Fedor got stopped on cuts. He lost.

I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.

by Llewdor on Sep 8, 2009 6:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not taking sides here but the cut did come from an illegal strike.

Walla walla walla I'm an idiot.

by ufc4 on Sep 8, 2009 11:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

What a shame to bitch about a cut in order to discredit his accomplishment.

You don't look like a Tanaka.

by spectaa on Sep 8, 2009 4:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

What are you talking about?

The guy simply stated a fact. I did not read that as a judgment about Fedor. People need to lighten up when it comes to him.

Arguing on the internet is like being in the special olympics, even when you win you are still retarded.

by dnevil001 on Sep 8, 2009 4:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree. These boards seem to be the technicality police anyways where they support glove touch cheap shots because they are technically within the rules, so Fedor is a 1 loss fighter because he lost according to the rules. You have to love hypocrisy on these boards. Either go by the absolute letter of the law or think reasonably.

fedor is many thing, and undefeated being one of them :P

by orcus on Sep 8, 2009 4:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

And I’ve never been to jail, except for that one time I was arrested, but it was only on the technicality that I broke the law. So I guess one could argue that I am jail-free.

Franklin really is the epitome of a "company man"

Dana is very fortunate to have a fighter like that, who only asks “how high?”

by Scott Haber on Sep 8, 2009 3:40 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

And Hughes and Liddell and GSP.

But Dana does take care of those same fighters.

by Riney on Sep 8, 2009 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Quid pro quo. Dana really puts an emphasis on loyalty and he treats his friends well.

by ricker2005 on Sep 8, 2009 4:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Franklin is also probably 1 of the 15 or so fighters that make over a million a year too.

by Dropkick434 on Sep 8, 2009 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If Fedor does well in Strikeforce I think we will see him in the UFC

I mean think about it he has never fought in a cage before and I dont care if you are the baddest man on the planet do you really want your first fight in the cage to be against Lesnar?

Hopefully he does these 3 matches in SF and wins and Brock continues to win and we set up the greatest heavyweight bout in mma history.

by bigdmmafan on Sep 8, 2009 3:55 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think it’s pretty obvious that he’s not going to sign with the UFC unless it is the only possible option left. I don’t know how many more times they have it in them to try and make the next Pride.

by Phildo on Sep 8, 2009 4:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It’s been obvious for a while now that Fedor just isn’t going to the UFC.

by ufc4 on Sep 8, 2009 11:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Fedor isn’t signing with the UFC because it’s not in M-1’s best interest as a company. That’s been made plainly obvious for quite a while now, they want what they want and they don’t have to compromise because there has always been someone else that will give it to them so far.

by who me on Sep 8, 2009 11:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Right, and Fedor losing isn’t in M-1’s best interests.

Walla walla walla I'm an idiot.

Which is why other fighters are probably saying the things they are saying about this.

Cro Cop sounds serious and determined. Awesome. Someone is definitely gonna get knocked out on fight night! (My money is still on Dos Santos).

by pud333 on Sep 8, 2009 4:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Did the fact that Fedor’s not as willing as he is to work for a guy who would insult and disrespect him ever cross Cro Cop’s mind before he opened his mouth. I don’t understand every fighter’s attitude that he has to fight in the UFC or he must be scared

by drano on Sep 8, 2009 8:09 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Perhaps the actual fighters have more insight into what goes on in the sport than random internet MMA fans do?

by who me on Sep 8, 2009 8:30 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Hard to think any fighter wouldn’t have an alternative agenda if they were not only in the same weight class but had loss to him before but then again I guess random internet MMA fans aren’t as capable as cro cop in drawing up opinions and looking at a fighters record.

by drano on Sep 8, 2009 10:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You said you didn’t understand “every” fighter’s attitude that he has to fight in the UFC, which I though was a funny statement. Do you think that random internet MMA fans are smarter than every fighter or just the ones who say bad things about Fedor and his management? I mean we have two choices here, either the vast majority of fighters just want to fight in the UFC or there is some grand conspiracy here that only internet MMA fans can detect.

by who me on Sep 8, 2009 11:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

actually I was referring to Fedor pretty much every time a fighter is interviewed and asked about Fedor it’s all about why he isn’t fighting in the UFC what I said is why doe Fedor have to fight in the UFC. I wasn’t trying to unmask a huge internet conspiracy or revolution away from the UFC

by drano on Sep 8, 2009 11:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He doesn’t HAVE to fight in the UFC, I mean it’s not like they have the top fighter in every other weight class. Oh wait…

Walla walla walla I'm an idiot.

by ufc4 on Sep 8, 2009 11:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Then don’t call him the best in his weight class, I’ve never heard him claim that he is.

by drano on Sep 8, 2009 11:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

M-1 claims it all the time.

by who me on Sep 8, 2009 11:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

okay but Fedor denies it

by drano on Sep 8, 2009 11:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

“I guess that’s something that you have to ask Fedor,” Millen said. “I can’t speak for Fedor, but I can tell you what I think. I think Fedor’s already proven his legacy. I was at all of his fights in PRIDE, and I no-doubt saw the best fighter in the world perform.”

Walla walla walla I'm an idiot.

by ufc4 on Sep 9, 2009 12:01 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Okay Millen thinks Fedor is the best in the world

by drano on Sep 9, 2009 12:03 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well it seems that other fighters don’t care for Fedor’s reasons for not signing. I mean you say that Cro Cop wouldn’t understand why Fedor wouldn’t work for a guy who disrespected him yet Cro Cop got a double barrel of Dana White just a couple of months ago and still managed to get everything he wanted out a deal and is talking about how important being in the UFC is. Cro Cop understands that first hand but it didn’t stop him from signing a contract. It’s the major leagues of the sport, it’s the top of the heap all these guys are working to be there and Fedor is doing all he can to stay away. Of course these guys are going to question why Fedor and his management are doing the things they are doing, even Fedor’s own brother is questioning it. Why is it so hard to believe these fighters actually understand the situation and are giving their honest opinions of it? Why does everyone else have to have an ulterior motive when they wonder out loud if Fedor’s management team has an ulterior motive?

by who me on Sep 8, 2009 11:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I had thought of Cro Cop getting the Dana White treatment but doesn’t that say more about Cro Cop if my boss pulled that kinda crap I wouldn’t be working for him. My point is that Fedor doesn’t owe the MMA community anything if he wants to align himself with M-1 then that’s his decision and his right to do so the guy has fought a who’s who of contenders to call him a coward at this point in his career is just dumb. Yeah we’re missing out on a lot of good matchups since he didn’t sign with the UFC but he gave us alot of great fights outside the UFC I just don’t understand what the big deal is.

by drano on Sep 9, 2009 12:00 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Your boss isn’t paying you millions of dollars a year, that makes a huge difference. These guys know Dana White personally and get beyond the stuff he says as a public fight promoter, the are in the sport and know how it works. We make a lot of judgments about White and the UFC based on entirely on public statements from a fight promoter (whose job is to say things that get people’s attention) without actually knowing the man or what it is like to work for him.

As far as Fedor owing anyone anything no he doesn’t owe anyone anything at all, the thing is that none of these other people owe Fedor anything either. They are well within their rights to talk about him and say the things they do. We all have to live with the decisions we make and the consequences of them, including Fedor. If one of the consequences is other fighters questioning his motives well then that just comes with the territory. What is really bad is when people don’t want to talk about you anymore.
