Alistair Overeem Shares a Few Details on Why he Hasn't Defended his Strikeforce Belt
Alistair Overeem has had his fair share of criticism for not defending his Strikeforce heavyweight belt since he won it back in 2007. Brett Rogers even accused Alistair of being scared of him. The 'Demolition Man' expouned on the bathroom 'incident' that caused his hand injury and shared a few details on his contract situation, which shed some light on why he hasn't defended his belt:

My contract with Strikeforce was only made about three months before the incident, I think they let me fight against (Vitor)Belfort and Paul (Buentello) to lose, but I won. Normally in a contract it says you have to defend your title within a certain period. But my contract just ended there. As I had a long term contract with FEG, I kept fighting for Dream and K-1. It's ironic that we finally got an offer from Strikeforce and reached an agreement, and I get in some stupid brawl and cut my hand. In jail it got infected and it took longer than expected.
The hand is healed now and I just started to train again... I do not care [if it's Rogers or Fedor], I will defend my title and I will be ready.
Kelvin Hunt thinks Strikeforce could be the one to blame, since not having a clause or an extension in place for their champion prevents him from competing in the promotion:
Apparently he has a new contract with Strikeforce, and has two fights he needs to complete before he can defend the Strikeforce heavyweight title. So if that doesn't come to fruition, it'll be time to get back Overeem for not doing so.

I tend to agree with Hunt. This is the kind of stuff you have to deal with in the open contracts scene. There are good and bad sides to everything.
Now, like he says, if AO doesn’t defend after those two fights, then we can jump all over him.
And, I still think AO is the best match with Fedor outside of Lesner. The problem is beyond that…

by the time that happens (which won’t be anytime soon), there will probably be tons of new contenders already..
orrrr, we’d probably be dead by then, cause it will never happen. Fedor (the robot that he is), will probably just continue crushing non-UFC contenders till the end of time.

Well
I agree that Overeem is the most compelling matchup outside of the UFC, but i’m still very interested in fights like the imminent Fedor/ Rogers, as well as fights with Werdum, Barnett, Bigfoot Silva, and even Monson.

on the bathroom brawl:
Some toilet woman stopped me for fifty cents, I told her I did not have small money but will bring one euro later. Then some bouncer got involved…being aggressive, my brother also involved. I walked to the exit and said I do not want any of this shit. When I stepped outside, my brother Valentijn was hit in the face with an object just before he could walk outside of that place. 5 bouncers jumped on him, I went in to help him…that’s pretty much what happened!
.
[note: All five of those bouncers were sent to the hospital that night.]
Did he mention anything about why he cancelled his fight with SF because of injury yet was healthy enough to compete in K-1?
Walla walla walla I'm an idiot.

well to be fair, his scheduled title defense against Werdum was supposed to happen in August 15,
while the K-1 bout is on Late Sept, and mid october… On him not defending his belt against Fedor this october, i think that’s coker who decided that he wanted to build up the fight..
the question though, is why won’t they build it up by having Overeem defend on the same card? ..I’m not sure, but Kelvin Hunt said that:
has two fights he needs to complete before he can defend the Strikeforce heavyweight title
could be that he needs to complete the 2 k-1 matches before he can fight for SF, but who knows for sure.
