UFC 103 Preview: Martin Kampmann Talks About Paul Daley Stepping in for Mike Swick
Martin Kampmann was originally scheduled to face off against Mike Swick in a match that could've determined the no.1 contender to the UFC welterweight title. Swick had to pull out due to a concussion he endured in training, so now he is set to face British striker, Paul Daley. The 'Hitman' talked to fight hype about the change of opponents:

I know they're different, but still, they have a lot of similarities. They are both good strikers. Daley has knockout power in his strikes. I've been preparing for a striker in Swick, but now, I'm just fighting a short guy instead of a tall guy... I know he's a tough guy with knockout power. So he's definitely a guy I respect for sure.... He throws more kicks than Swick as well, so we'll see.
It's still pretty much the same. I think Paul Daley has a weaker ground game than Swick does, so I might have a bigger advantage on the ground against him. Maybe if I get the chance, I might try to take him down, but you know the fight starts standing up and that's where I plan on being.
He also thinks that this might not be a number one contender's match anymore:
I don't think Paul Daley has the same name recognition, so this is probably not a number one contender's fight anymore. Even though Paul Daley's a very tough guy, he doesn't have the name recognition that Swick does. Unfortunately, I don't think a win would bump me up to number one contender.

Kampmann is now in a must win situation
since he’ll be expected to beat Daley.
But Daley could easily connect quick and KTFO him.

If he wins without taking much damage,
he could have that fight against Swick real soon, as Mike said he’ll be ready to fight by 104.. Same thing goes for Daley.
should be a pretty entertaining fight though.

This is a great fight, IMO. A lot of fans might be surprised to know that Daley is a VERY good striker.

yep, i think it's an even better fight than Kampann/Swick
If Daley wins, i want him against Condit.. If Kampmann wins (without taking much damage), give him swick as soon as possible.

Wouldn’t Condit be kind of a step back for Daley if he beats Kampmann? He’d be going from Kampmann to a guy Kampmann just beat in his last fight. Why not give the winner Swick regardless of who it is?

I doubt he will though
Martin has a good chin, and his wrestling/ ground skills are far better than Paul’s.

Remember the arm triangle choke on McFedries? I’m thinking Semtex will be suffering a similar fate.

Agreed.
Kampmann’s sufficiently well-rounded that anybody with one part of their game that’s significantly better than the rest becomes an easier fight for him by being predictable.

If Daley can avoid the ground at all cost, this fight will be very interesting.
I’ll give Daley one thing, he has a chin.

If Daley can avoid the ground, he probably wins pretty easily.
Kampmann has TKO victories, but usually over one-dimensional grapplers.
The reason I like Kampmann for this fight is because he’s generally really good at whatever his opponent does badly – and Daley has an obvious hole.

I disagreee
Daley got outstruck by Thompson, who IMO is an inferior striker to Kampmann. The thing about Martin is that he’ll always fight the smartest fight possible. If his best chance is to make the other guy comfortable on the feet so that he can clinch up and throw him to the mat, then that’s what he’ll do. If the other fighter has inferior striking (like Leites did) then he’ll outstrike them and stuff their takedowns.
I took muay thai under Martin every Monday night over the Summer, and his reflexes, technical striking, and fighter’s IQ are second to none. I’ve been a fan since before I even began training at XTC, and his teaching just confirms what I already knew.
I think he weathers an early storm, clinches up w/ Semtex, takes him down without too much of a problem (given Daley’s subpar wrestling), and scores a sub in the 1’st or 2’nd round.

I don't doubt the early sub for a second.
I think this is an easy fight for Kampmann, even if Daley did have a significant advantage on the feet. If he doesn’t… well then Semtex is in deep trouble.

. . . Marquardt???
Sorry, I couldn’t help it, he didn’t offer Marquardt any competition.

Well
like I said before, he got crushed by Nate, but Nate is probably one of the (if not THE) biggest 185’ers out there, and from the film Martin had seen up until then, it’s not like he was expecting the rabidly aggressive Marquardt that showed up that night.
Also, if you watch the fight again, Kampmann gets in quite a few good solid counters, it’s just that he doesn’t have the kind of power @ MW to be able to compete with an absolute fucking bull like Marquardt.

I think so too
and I think that’s why he was so soundly trounced by Marquardt.
Nate is a tremendous fighter, who is equally as skilled as Kampmann in every aspect, and is much bigger, and he basically just overwhelmed him.
I can’t help but worry that GSP might do the same to Martin, though…
