This sucker punch at an amateur MMA event has Steve Cofield calling for a ban from the sport -- "Nevada shouldn't license this kid anytime soon unless he comes in front of the commission to explain his actions. Frankly, it should be treated more harshly than a positive drug test." HT Fightlinker.

I hate to say this but you see it all the time in amateur promotions. This is far more common then most realize. Since I’ve started going to local shows I’ve seen something like this about 4 times.

yup – unfortunately this is not uncommon. it should be illegal. it wouldn’t be that hard to write a rule to address it.

by GregS123 on Sep 5, 2009 8:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Make them touch gloves before the fight starts. Unclear if they have here, but they probably did already.

There’s no need for a rule stating no hitting for 5 seconds during what is supposed to be a fight. It’s bad sportsmanship, but that’s all.

When doesn't he overreact...

Just like the whole Overeem thing…

For some reason, he can’t fathom why someone would fight K-1. I mean, yeah… Overeem not coming over to the States is sketchy, but hey…. K-1 pays great money.

Perfectly legal, and it always has been. I’m not sure why this is suddenly an issue. There were a few of these cases a few years ago where the guy didn’t even touch gloves and the opponent tried and got flat out KO’d.

Shit thing to do of course, but i can’t see a ban, how do you ban somebody when they haven’t broken the official rules? Most i see happening is some kind of official rule being made from it.

there is the “protect yourself at all times” rule :P

This is important.

The proper time to touch gloves is before the fight, not during it.

1. The guy is a fuckwad
2. It technically not
3. Just put him in with a ringer. I like the idea of Wanderlie. Can we sign up to fight in Nevada under an assumed name. I’m sure the tool will jump at the chance to fight “Cory Neddermeyer”.

I kind of agree with Josh Gross on this. The bell has rung, the period of unarmed combat has begun, it’s your responsibility as an athlete to protect yourself. It’s always the danger of the spar-ey “let’s high-five every ten seconds” thing. You were given the opportunity to touch gloves before the fight started.

However, this Sheridan has clearly lost the benefit of the doubt in such situations. I would never touch gloves with that guy. Ever. And it would be ill advised for any fighter to do so.

Rematch.

As it’s not really illegal, maybe the rules could be amended for such unsportsman like conduct so you could deduct a point or something. Otherwise “Protect yourself at all times” is the scapegoat for shit like this.

by kyfm621 on Sep 5, 2009 7:15 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

rules like that would be too complicated to enforce, and we already have our fair share of human error in judging MMA fights. It’s better to keep things as easy as possible, and “protect yourself at all times” does just that.

not really a scape goat

the round started, the timer had begun
the bout was official, and touching gloves is optional

I have a better idea … they should make a rule banning ‘touching gloves’ after the bell rings. I hate watching fights like Smith-Sell or Lawler-Lytle where the fighters feel the need to touchgloves after every exchange.

I became an instant Todd Duffee fan when he shook off his opponent requesting a glove touch in his UFC debut. Touch gloves before the bell and be done with it. There is no reason to be touching gloves after the fight has begun.

by Steve4192 on Sep 5, 2009 9:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

At the very most touch once, right at the start of the round. I hate constant hugging, high-fiving, arm-waving work-the-crowd crap. You know what crowds like the best? Damn good fights!

I don’t care about touching gloves after the bell, but if you agree to do it and then blitz them, you’re a jackass. I say touch gloves during the ref’s instructions and maybe between rounds. Just fight, dammit.

You are supposed to fight until the referee stops you. Hendo did precisely that.

but it was bad sportsman ship

to hit him when he KNEW he was out

was it not? you cant choose ti ignore one, and chastise another

you are supposed to fight from the second it starts, until it ends

he did, precisely that

"he's the best punchy face man in the buisness"

by blubber_guard on Sep 6, 2009 3:16 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

apples and oranges.

Hendo is a different situation. We have the benefit of endless replays, and post-fight speeches to help us make an informed opinion, while the crowd was just cheering an awesome KO by a beloved fighter. Hendo caught some heat in the following days as was we all analyzed every detail of those last 2 seconds. Besides that, one is a debatably unsportsmanlike heat-of-the-moment hit, and one is a nearly-universally loathed, premeditated bitch move.

by Grappo on Sep 6, 2009 5:26 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

but...

hendo knew he was out cold and the sportsman like thing to do would have been to not hit him, see nate marquart vs maia for how it should be done

This bloke (Sheridan) is clearly a sociopath...

The kind that are really bad for MMA. Probably even the kind of guy to use his MMA training to beat civilians up.

He is also a coward because he (probably) planned what he did and it is in a way exploiting sportsmanship in MMA. I think he should be banned, and I think others like him should be too – to protect the sports image and to encourage sportsmanship. Even in the small shows, because for some who are new and maybe going with friends is possible their first contact with MMA.

That said, I think people touching gloves should always make sure they’re not on the outside when they touch gloves. i.e. Sheridan touched with his left hand and therefore had his opponent on the inside of him. His opponent, on the other hand, touched with his left, therefore leaving his opponent on the outside of him exposing himself.

by Ilias on Sep 6, 2009 8:24 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

What do you ban him for? Hitting a guy after the bell has rung?

I agree it was a dick move, but it was a perfectly legal dick move. You can’t ban a guy for doing something that is perfectly legal. Hopefully, the promoter does the right thing and brings in a ringer for his next opponent. Have someone kick the shit out of the guy and teach him a lesson.

by Steve4192 on Sep 6, 2009 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

OK, I guess it is perfectly legal, what he did. A dick move, but a legal one. We will just have to let karma take this one. He is obviously gonna create enemy’s by doing this and maybe next time someone gets him in an armbar, they might just be extra vicious. But you see, it does disgrace the sport a little bit. So I must digress, even though they can’t actually ban him, promotions should shun him, just like the UFC with Babalu! We shouldn’t have little rogues like that in MMA because it disgraces the sport.

by Ilias on Sep 6, 2009 3:55 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

this is a nice tie in with the other article on this site about fighters and the use of watching tape on a guy before you fight them. Banngin the guy, etc. is tough because it isn’t illegal, but if i am set to fight this guy, hopefuly somebody in my corner has seen tape on him (same with Manny and the move he pulls). I either then refuse to touch gloves with the guy, or i get a shot off before he tries to sucker me.
