Frank Mir's Trash Talk Makes Antonio Rodrigo Noguiera Want A Rematch

Frank Mir has been talking about how Nogueira was just making excuses for his loss to him last December:

W4sj5_medium

I heard that Rogan is making a lot of excuses for certain fighters for why they performed badly. That's always disheartening to me just for the reason being that every fighter has reasons why we don't perform at 100 percent. I think as fans we don't want to hear heroes or warriors ever sitting and complaining that they almost died from staph or anything else. I think that's pretty sad and pathetic.

Noguiera heard this, and now he wants a rematch. His manager, Ed Soares, talked to mmajunkie about it:

Rodrigo's been watching a lot of these interviews with Mir saying that Nogueira is just making excuses, and what Nogueira feels is he's not making excuses. If he was making excuses, he would have been saying that immediately after the fight with Mir.

Nogueira didn't want the information about his injuries to come out, and that's proof that he wasn't making excuses... There's a big difference between making excuses and giving the reason why. And just to prove that Nogueira is not making excuses, he wants his next fight to be against Mir, and he wants to fight him in December.

Minotauro also talked to tatame about it:

I don’t demerit his victory, I never did that. He did a great fight that day, it was his fight and I can’t say anything about it. He really beated me, but everybody saw that I wasn’t well. I didn’t say anything at that time, but everybody saw that.

The same punch I took in this fight [against Couture] and didn’t went down... I wanna fight him again. [The rematch would be] A lot different... I won’t say how it’d be, but it’d be a lot different than the first one.

The rematch is obviously something that both fighters want, but the problem is Frank Mir is already penciled in to face Cheick Kongo on UFC 107 this December.

Much like the proposed UFC 103 rematch between Franklin and Henderson, Dana White and the UFC brass have shown that in some cases, they are willing to scrap scheduled events in favor of more interesting ones. Will this be another one of those special cases?

If I were Frank I'd be pissed too

That was the biggest win of his career, a culmination of an amazing comeback from near death experience. I’m hot and cold on Mir, but that fight was one of my favorites in the UFC because of the raw and positive emotion from Mir afterwards, what it meant to him to win and to be Minotauro. To see that win so easily dismissed would piss me off too. There were reasons why Mir won that fight other than Nog wasn’t 100%, like crisp stand up, smartly not jumping in Nog’s guard, and generally out boxing him and mixing up his strikes. Nog wasn’t 100%, but neither was Mir.

“If Mir feels it’s an excuse, then lets get in the Octagon and see whether it’s an excuse or a reason in December and settle it," he continued. "I’d love to fight Frank Mir at UFC 107."

I agree with Nogueira. I broke the story about how it was staph infection that hindered Nog’s performance at UFC 92.

I hate Mir now. Used to like him. He’s a tool now.

Mir rubbed me the wrong way when he was a coach on TUF. They way he was making fun of Nog’s soccer skills and talking about how he is 200 times the athlete that Nog is. It’s not even the fact that he said it, it’s the way he said it…dripping with smugness.

by soadtrails on Sep 5, 2009 7:41 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, that was pretty disgusting and pathetic. Mir sometimes sounds like he uses some kind of alcoholic self motivation techniques, like in previews of UFC 100, where he stated that he trains striking techniques that most heavy weights don’t even know the names of.
Even though I enjoy listening to him when he’s not talking about himself…

by dancingChicken on Sep 5, 2009 8:04 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

so stupid

I can’t stand MMA comments that say "I hate . . . " because of some strange quote on a TV show. You know why should hate someone? If they kill someone, purposefully injure someone, talk shit and not back it up ever, etc etc. If Mir talked a little crap on TUF, big deal. Same with Bisping. They were trying to build interest in a fight.

Thank you for bringing your world and moral views into this discussion. Never once did I say I HATE the guy, and even if I did who the hell are you to tell me that I am wrong in my thinking? Are you the thought police?

I STARTED disliking the guy because of what he said on TUF, that is not the only reason I can’t stand him. Before the show, I quite liked him. Now all he is to me is a big head filled with hot air….and lips that flap in the breeze of said gasses being expelled.

He talked alot of shit before the Lesnar rematch….how did that one turn out again?

Bisping acted like and idiot on the show too, and talked shit….how did that one turn out again?

I don’t like people who talk shit just to stir up the hornets nests. If you are one that happens to like that sort of thing, I am not going to post a comment about YOU saying that you shouldn’t think that way. We are all entitled to our own opinions and thoughts. If they are all in line with what YOU think, then there is no diversity and the world would be quite a boring place.

I’m actually quite glad that my dislike of Mir bothers you enough to have to post about it. Keep up your keyboard warrioring!

More crying for Nog what a shock, I’ve lost so much respect for him since that fight it’s incredible. Mir destroyed him and then he goes and starts making excuses and now he’s trying to say that Mir is the bad guy wtf?. Seriously take a lesson from Maia and accept defeat like a man then maybe you wouldn’t come off as a sore loser Mir is 100% right it’s really pathetic.

by Raker on Sep 4, 2009 11:02 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Nog is not the one who first mentioned the staph infection or his time in the hospital, when it got out he was asked questions about it and he answered them, that’s all.

Walla walla walla I'm an idiot.

by ufc4 on Sep 4, 2009 11:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Are you serious?

“More crying for Nog what a shock”

When has he ever made excuses or complaints about a fight? Or for that matter, not conducted himself with class and been a tremendous ambassador for the sport? Admitting you had a staph infection and a torn meniscus is not making an excuse. It’s providing a reason why you performed at a sub-standard level.

Now, saying the only reason you lost a fight to a bigger, stronger, more athletic man is because that man was supposedly running away from you…that’s making an excuse. Maybe every Brock fan should be on her clamoring for Mir to STFU. For the record, I genuinely like Mir, but he needs the occasional ass-whooping to keep his ego in check. Hopefully Nog gets to fight him again and shut his mouth for a couple months.

Unfortunately

His last ass whooping doesn’t seem to have quelled his ego at all

by soadtrails on Sep 5, 2009 7:44 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

There's some new interviews on-line though

And in them he at least concedes that Brock is stronger and more athletic, and that he underestimated Brock. So at least he’s not talking about how he only lost because Brock was running from him…

I'm a bit confused...

Where was Mir’s “trash talk”?
Wasn’t Mir referring to Rogan making excuses, not Nog?

Disagreeing with a commentator’s opinion about whether a staph infection played a role in a previous fight is what we consider trash talk these days?

weoweoweo is the best… and I <3 Vera cause he is pogi.

Did you actually read the MMA Junkie article?

“That’s always disheartening to me just for the reason being that every fighter has reasons why we don’t perform at 100 percent. I think as fans we don’t want to hear heroes or warriors ever sitting and complaining that they almost died from staph or anything else. I think that’s pretty sad and pathetic.”

There’s your trash talk.

Walla walla walla I'm an idiot.

by ufc4 on Sep 4, 2009 11:18 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Did you actually read the entire paragraph?

Starting at the beginning?

I heard that Rogan is making a lot of excuses for certain fighters for why they performed badly.

The first sentence is usually kind of important to a paragraph. Strange you chose to cut that one off.

So I go back to my question, where is Mir trash talking Nog?

weoweoweo is the best… and I <3 Vera cause he is pogi.

by mythbuster on Sep 5, 2009 12:56 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Strange you can’t tell that he switches focus in the middle of the paragraph from addressing Rogan to slamming Nog. “I think as fans WE DON’T WANT TO HEAR HEROES OR WARRIORS EVER SITTING AND COMPLAINING THAT THEY ALMOST DIED FROM STAPH OR ANYTHING ELSE. I THINK THAT’S PRETTY SAD AND PATHETIC.”

Seems to me that is directed at Nog directly.

by soadtrails on Sep 5, 2009 7:48 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Seems to me” <— that explains a lot. He doesn’t mention Nog, or “he” referring to Nog… It “seems” to you because you don’t like Mir, you freely and emotionally point out in a post above.

Anyway, to take that quote as trash talk against Nog is really stretching things, considering he’s talking about something Rogan said…

weoweoweo is the best… and I <3 Vera cause he is pogi.

by mythbuster on Sep 5, 2009 10:51 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

So you are saying he is referring to Rogan when he says “heroes” or “warriors”? I think your reading comprehension is a little off on this one myth.

Walla walla walla I'm an idiot.

by ufc4 on Sep 5, 2009 11:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Is Nog more than one person, to be called “heroes” and “warriors”?

or are you getting into these ridiculous semantics to avoid the fact that Mir was referencing comments made by Rogan, not Nog?

I mean, seriously, it doesn’t get harder to understand than, “I heard that Rogan is making a lot of excuses for certain fighters for why they performed badly.” I mean, the guy comes out and says it…

mountains, molehills… you know how it goes.

weoweoweo is the best… and I <3 Vera cause he is pogi.

by mythbuster on Sep 6, 2009 1:12 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Mir isnt trash talking and Nog isnt making excuses

Mir is pissed off with Joe Rogan and others who are discrediting his win by bringing up the staph infection and the knee injury. Frank Mir feels like he faced the best Nog and beat him. I strongly disagree.

Nog is making no excuses. Since his injury information came out all these interviewers like Rogan and others have asked him about it and he just tells the truth that he was really f’d up before the fight.

The only thing with Nog is he hearing Mir say how Mir beat the best Nog and Nog knows that isnt true so now he wants a rematch.

Honestly this whole thing probably would have been better if Nog had just pulled out of the fight back then but it happened and Frank Mir won. Staph or No Staph.

Frank Mir is very cocky. You heard him say the same sh@t before UFC 100 about how he beat Lesnar even though he was getting his @Ss handed to him before the submission. And Lesnar came out and proved he was the real deal.

I say let the fight happen. If Nog continues to train as hard as he did for Couture he can give anybody a tough match. If I’m Frank Mir I would just focus on winning quit blasting Joe Rogan or anyone else.

You want to prove people wrong Frank? Come back better and more determined than ever.

Scrap the Fight

Although I’d love to see Mir vs Kongo…i’d give it up only to see Mir whoop Nog again for making excuses and for Kongo to fight Anderson….

by AfroSamurai on Sep 4, 2009 11:50 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Making excuses?

For starters, roughly 8 months went by before Nogueira gave any real “reasons” for why he performed poorly. Prior to that, he simply responded when questioned about being in the hospital with a staph infection. He also tore his meniscus. If you don’t think those are valid reasons for a sub-standard performance, there’s little helping you.

by Ryjo on Sep 5, 2009 12:37 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

no...

Its a double standard… had Mir said the same things about an injury, and lost, most fans would chalk it up to him making excuses…

I'm like PacMan fightin you silly kids... throw ya Hatton the ring, and get knocked outlike Ricky did.
lol.

by Loot on Sep 5, 2009 3:29 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe most fans would chalk it up to making excuses, but that wouldn’t mean those fans are right. If Nogueira said in the 92 PFI with Rogan that he wasn’t feeling well, that his knee was shot, and that he was overweight and badly out of shape from a staph infection, there’d be some validity to saying he’s making excuses.

Rather, Dana came out a few days later and confirmed Nogueira’s medical issues. When questioned about it, Nog said he had a staph infection and torn meniscus, and attributed that to his poor performance. That’s not an excuse; it’s a reason. Nog didn’t invalidate Mir’s victory; he essentially said that Mir beat a less than 100% version of Nogueira.

Semantics are pretty damn important.

I say make it happen. After losing Rashad/Rampage, the card could use another marquee fight since it’s the Ultimate 2009 or whatever they call it. Go out with a bang.

rec

my thoughts exactly

by Ryjo on Sep 5, 2009 1:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually I think you are confused as to what a reason and an excuse is, a reason for losing would be a bad gameplan or lack of skill on a fighters part leading to a loss. Example, Bispings strategy to move into Dan’s right hand is a reason to explain why he lost or some fighter losing a fight because he couldn’t stop a guys takedowns.

An excuse is justifying a loss by saying you were hurt or the accusing your opponent of cheating an example would be Nog talking about his injuires after the fact or BJ bitching aboug grease. There is no room for excuses in this sport the fact that people seem to play favorites with it is my biggest problem because we all know if it was the other way around Mir would be getting crucified.

by Raker on Sep 5, 2009 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe you're confused about what Nogueira said?

And I’m not saying that to be a prick, either. But when asked about his performance, Nogueira gave reasons why he didn’t perform well. Staph and a torn meniscus are reasons why one would be out of shape and demonstrate less fluid motion.

Nog didn’t intentionally attempt to discredit Mir; he said he fought at less than 100% and that’s why he performed poorly. There’s a difference.

by Ryjo on Sep 5, 2009 8:15 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No

An excuse carries a negative connotation. If a fighter is genuinely injured and that obviously changed their performance, there’s no wrong in acknowledging that. Again, the big difference here is that he never said that he would have won otherwise, he was simply explaining the events that lead to the performance that the fans saw.

by Shaun32887 on Sep 5, 2009 8:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually there is when before the match no mention of an injury is made, talking about injuries after the fact is an excuse plain and simple.

by Raker on Sep 5, 2009 9:10 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Who ever brings up injuries before they get into the cage? That’s just stupid.

Nate Marquardt won and still brought up an injury after he won.

It’s not an excuse. It’s information and insight into why said fighter may have not performed up to standards.

If Nogueira had brought up the injury before the bout and pulled out, do you not realize how many people would say he’s bringing up excuses to not fight Frank Mir? Hell, even Mir would have done it.

http://twitter.com/FlyByKnite

by FlyByKnight on Sep 5, 2009 9:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It is an excuse, why else would you bring it up if not to justify losing a fight because you weren’t at 100%. The fact is no one forced Nog to fight Mir if he wasn’t healthy, look at Mir he pulled out of the UFC 98 fight with Brock because he wasn’t 100% and the world didn’t stop. .

by Raker on Sep 6, 2009 1:19 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

And did you not see the flack Mir got for it? Jesus. Brock accused Mir of being afraid.

I wanna see this fight, Big nog vs. couture was fight of the year in my books, and I believe 100% if this nog would have stepped in the ring with mir their first fight, the result would be rather different, Kongo is a great fighter, not dissing the guy, but I think hardcore MMA fans rather watch this fight instead….Give Kongo something to grind his teeth on ^^
