Matt Hughes Likely to Finish Career in UFC, Signs Multi-Fight Deal

In a move that seems to be following the blueprint that Randy Couture laid out before stepping into the cage against Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Matt Hughes has also signed a new multi-fight deal that will likely extend to the length of his fighting career in MMA:

Last week I went out to Vegas and I signed a multi-fight deal with the UFC, which is much like my last contract. I also brought up the fact that I wanted to do a hunting show and they thought that would be a good thing. They still have to find out who, where and when my next fight will be and I will try to post that info ASAP. Nothing is decided yet, so anything you might be reading on the internet right now is just rumors and speculation. However, one name the UFC did bring up is a person I’ve never fought before.

The 35-year-old 9-time UFC Welterweight champion really has nothing more to prove in this sport. While he probably can't contend with the likes of Georges St. Pierre anymore at the peak of the mountain of welterweight talent, he is still athletic enough and solid enough in his wrestling style to present problems to up-and-coming talent along with mid-to-upper echelon fighters.

He's only has five total losses in his UFC career with two coming from the current champion Georges St. Pierre, a former title contender in Thiago Alves, and a showdown with B.J. Penn, considered to be one of the best fighters in the world at lightweight. Oh yeah... and he happened to lose to Dennis Hallman at UFC 29 in :20 seconds. It's interesting how Dennis Hallman has signed a UFC contract. I smell a rematch within the span of this current deal.

We really can't say that Hughes is completely over-the-hill if we simply look at the names attached to those losses, but some fans would say his performance against Matt Serra, Thiago Alves, and Georges St. Pierre would be indicative of an aging fighter. It's no secret that Hughes eventually has to drop off in performance at some point, but I'm not sure I'm completely convinced. I think his overall style as mostly a one-dimensional wrestler/ground and pound fighter is more of a problem.

What interesting fights could Hughes be involved in? Frank Trigg and Dennis Hallman are both rematches that Hughes could take, but the comment regarding an opponent that Hughes has never faced before could be interesting. Jon Fitch is currently rumored to be fighting Ricardo Almeida at UFC 106, Martin Kampmann will take on Paul Daley at UFC 103, and Josh Koscheck will take on Frank Trigg at UFC 103. That eliminates most of the top ten.

Star-divide

It certainly sounds like it could be a long-time veteran, and my initial guess would have been Karo Parisyan if not for his scheduled bout against Dustin Hazelett at UFC 106. Brock Larson might be a suitable opponent if he defeats Mike Pierce at UFN 19, and he's also a long-time veteran of the sport. Marcus Davis is currently sitting on the shelf awaiting a bout too. Mike Swick's injury may end up creating a match-up with Hughes as well.

Also indicated within the blog post, Hughes is also going to work on a hunting show that the UFC seems to have given him their blessing on. I suppose that'll be another revenue stream for Hughes and something he can do following his retirement down the road, so that can't be a bad thing.

In any case, fans should look forward to Matt Hughes' swan song of final battles in the Octagon over the next two to three years. Then again, Hughes may still be able to pull off some dominating performances and follow another blueprint that "The Natural" laid out for everyone... coming back and winning a title. Doubtful, but everything in this sport is unpredictable.

I think Hallman beat Hughes twice. Both by submission, both under 20 seconds.

On Hughes making a Couture-like resurgence, yeah, definitely doubtful. Couture learns new tricks. Hughes is still sort of a one trick pony.

Yes, he did. I didn’t mention it because the statement was within the context of UFC fights only.

My guess is if Anthony Johnson wins his next fight then he will fight Matt Hughes.

This gives Hughes time to do his hunting show, and Build a legit contender in Rumble.

Not a bad idea at all. Hughes is definitely a guy who would be up for the challenge.

And with a lack of contender, this would give GSP time to heal and then have one fight and then Rumble could take him on coming off a likely KO of Hughes

I know they’re hurting for an opponent for GSP, but I think it would still be too early for Rumble. I think GSP smashes him at this point.

That would be nice. I think that match could be competative. Or it could just be a thrashing on Hughes.

I think Hughes would get KTFO in the 1st round

My official guess is Matt Hughes vs Anthony Johnson on Jan 2, 2010

i doubt they'll want to end his career early..

the reason why they’re signing all these veterans is so that they would be able to keep them a bit longer while making them fight each other..

The winner of a senior circuit match gets a jump start in his career enroute to a possible final shot at the title before he retires.

I would think that they’re signing all these well known names both to keep them from competing orgs and just in case a network deal does get done, for headlining/ name recognition purposes

by amadeus on Sep 4, 2009 3:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yup, that too.. :)

although i think reviving the careers of legends are very important also… especially if they’ve got them locked up until they retire..

i agree that its a good move and makes the UFC almost look sentimental in a way towards their loyal fighters

I’d like to see Baroni vs Hughes for sure. If anything, it would be amusing to try to see if both their egos can fit in a cage at the same time.

Hughes would probably get real tired of Baroni’s shit-talking, but I doubt he could keep up.

I want to see Hughes rematch Serra, then fight either Hazelett or Karo. Swick isn’t a bad idea.

9-time UFC Welterweight champion?

I thought Hughes was a 2-time UFC Welterweight champion. Who did he win and lose the belt to 9 times?

by flickgrifter on Sep 4, 2009 3:55 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He meant that Hughes won or defended the title nine times.

Gotta hand it to the UFC, their stranglehold on mma continued to tighten. They’re so savvy in tying up all of their champions, as well as former champs who may no longer be able to contend for their respective titles but could be used by Strikeforce or other orgs to beef up their thin ranks or legitimize their champions.

It’s pretty amazing how quickly and smartly they’re moving. I’ve been critical of Dana’s decisions and actions in the past but lately he’s been seemingly making all the right moves. I hope they lock up Fedor next year and they’ll be sitting real pretty.

I am the bastard love child of Junie Browning and Diamond Dave Kaplan.

I don't see how you guys are so down on Hughes

I think he can still tear through most of the division- just not guys named St. Pierre and Alves. I would give him great odds against Anthony Johnson.

by Charger567 on Sep 4, 2009 4:38 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

yeah it also intrigues me

His record as of late has been less than stellar, but he lost to an Alves that didn’t make weight, and GSP, who everyone loses to. I’d still take him over most a majority of UFC ww’s, i can’t believe he isn’t top 10 still

by amadeus on Sep 4, 2009 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

At this point, anyone with solid striking & good takedown defense will put a sound beating on Hughes. He just isn’t explosive enough with his shots anymore to compete against the more athletic young guys, and with the way everyone cuts weight these days, his size isn’t really advantage anymore.
