Mike Swick Injured, Paul Daley Steps in to Face Martin Kampmann at UFC 103
There's been a major change to the co-headlining event for September 19th's UFC 103, as top-ranked welterweight Mike Swick suffered an injury while training with teammate Josh Koscheck, and will be replaced by British knockout artist Paul "Semtex" Daley in a welterweight battle with Martin Kampmann. The Sun reports:
MIKE SWICK is OUT of UFC 103 following a training accident suffered while sparring against Josh Koscheck.
Kos swept the American — nicknamed 'Quick' — causing him to land on his head.
His injuries are not serious but we can reveal he will be unable to face Martin Kampmann on September 19.
Instead, rising British star Paul 'Semtex' Daley will step in to face the Dutchman on the televised card of the showpiece event, which airs live on ESPN.
Daley was initially scheduled to make his UFC debut against fellow newcomer Brian Foster on the event's preliminary card, but the Brit will now step into the spotlight in a co-headlining bout against a very tough Martin Kampmann. The Kampmann-Swick fight was intended to determine a number one contender for Georges St. Pierre's welterweight title, but it's likely that those same stakes are no longer on the line. Nonetheless, with an impressive showing against Kampmann, Daley can certainly make much more of an impact on the UFC's 170-lb ladder than he would have with a win over Foster.
"Semtex" confirmed the change with The Sun and had this to add:
"I got the call and I accepted. I came to the UFC to fight the best, and that's what I am going to do.
"Kampmann is on a roll with the UFC, but I will roll over him. Semtex is going to explode onto the UFC's welterweight scene at UFC 103."
The UFC's president of UK affairs Marshall Zelaznik, also chimed in:
"He was asked to step up and — real fighter that he is — he accepted right away.
"He's already done the UK proud by stepping up and I know he's going to go all out to do exactly the same at UFC 103.
There's no word on a replacement opponent for Brian Foster yet.

I wonder if Kampmann still gets the title shot if he wins.
Probably if he wins convincingly, but a guy like Kampmann probably suffers more from a late replacement because his fights are so often all about his gameplan.

There goes the triple main event that UFC 103 had
Swick vs Kampmann was actually a fight that I was really looking forward to at UFC 103. I choose Swick to win, and I am actually one of the few that is interested in seeing Swick fight GSP. With GSP taking time off to heal his injury, at least there is no ‘rush’ (no pun intended) to have an immediate number one contender at Welterweight.
Nobody cares if your puns were intended.

Kampmann is danish
Sometimes you wonder, do they understand the game of football? They have a few drinks and probably the prawn sandwiches, and they don't realise what's going on out on the pitch.
Roy Keane
It's just like the Sun to make that sort of mistake.
