TUF 10: The Ultimate Fighter Live Discussion (Episode 3)

I'll be brief in last week's recap. Rampage chose to match up his big white ex-NFL'er, Wes Shivers, against Rashad's number one pick James McSweeney. After two rounds of heavy breathing, slow movement, and Rashad screaming like a banshee, McSweeney got a bit of a gift decision and advanced into round two.
But no one cares about that. Roy vs. Kimbo. Wow.
It's no stretch to say that this is the biggest fight in the history of the show. Past seasons had fights that look good in retrospect, but nothing can match the hype of this one.
Dana White's projecting six million viewers for this one. Six million! On cable!
On paper, it seems completely insane to expect anything other than a dominating Roy Nelson victory. Even some of the hype interviews would lend one to think Nelson takes this, though it sounds like Kimbo puts on a good showing.
With that in mind, I'm most interested in the fallout assuming Kimbo takes the fall here. Do fans lose interest? Does the editing team try to keep him in focus? Will he come back as an injury replacement?
All things said, if you watch one episode of the Ultimate Fighter this season, make it this one.

SHOGUN TO BE THE NEW LHW CHAMP!!!
Most likely
Kimbo will lose, the rest of the seasons ratings will not be as high but Kimbo will be signed to a UFC contract bigger than the winner and after losing 3 fights in the UFC he will be dropped and we will never hear about Kimbo again.
Dana did this for 2 reasons ratings and money. Now if Kimbo could find a way to win and win in the UFC it will make Dana even happier but I dont see it.
I will say this even though I see Nelson winning tonight I still dont see him winning the show. He is not as good as everyone thinks. Not only loses to Rothwell and Arlovski but he also lost to Monson who just got owned by Rizzo.

Is there somebody as good as those guys on the show?

If you actually saw the Monson fight, Roy won, but Cecil Peoples was the only one scoring it.

My guess is that Kimbo puts on a good show but Nelson ultimately wins. (No surprise yet.) Other predictions…
1) Dana White praises Kimbo as being a real fighter after all.
2) Kimbo comes back as an injury replacement.
3) TUF ads tease that Kimbo makes that return to keep viewers tuned in.
4) Might go so far as to tease Kimbo as coming back from injury possibly for redemption against Nelson, maybe hinting at a rematch in the finale.
From all the interviews I’ve seen, it seems like a very good guess that Nelson wins after Kimbo puts on a good show, so neither really loses in some sense. But for this to really matter, Kimbo can’t really be done yet. Either he wins (but why would Nelson do the press tour?), or he’s coming back later since he answered Dana in the affirmative after being asked, “Do you want to be a fucking fighter?”

It’s just an incredibly deep show. Not that this is a huge point, but 4 of the 5 nominations for best writing in a drama series were Mad Men. It just touches on so many issues of the 60’s and today without being obvious or pretentious or judgmental about it.
Plus the creator was one of the writers for the Sopranos.
Twitter: @Mike_Fagan_13
http://www.sackmikegoldberg.com
I like that it deals with the 1960s (though I’ve heard it’s lacking in it’s depiction of race, but I can’t intelligently comment on that) – I was floored in the pilot when the gynecologist lit a cigarette while “under the hood”, so to speak. I just don’t find any of the characters interesting (except for Christina Hendricks, but for a different reason…yummy…).

If you are fighting professionally you really should spend the 100-150 dollars to get a fitted mouthpiece by a dentist. Boil and bite mouthpieces work okay but they can be hard to shape for some people’s mouth and some fighters trim them too much and they lose their structual integrity. A dentist mouthpiece will fit tight, be more comfortable, and you know that it is fit to work properly.

I didn't think
damage was one of the criteria, Kimbo wasn’t intelligently defending himself, fights are stopped all the time based on that alone
Chris Leben telling Bisping to hit him & then dropping his hands wasn’t intelligent defense, but that wasn’t stopped, either. I think it just goes to good judgment (whatever that means) – Kimbo not taking damage with less than a minute left is good to go by me.

yes.
Not as long as most around here, though. First PPV I bought was A. Silva / Henderson.
What did you find particularly exciting about that fight? I don’t mean that I just wanted to see a lot of standup damage or anything, but a stoppage because one guy is much better than the other at the ground game, without a submission or actually doing much damage, is kind of boring.
Thing is though, you asked if you were foolish for getting excited about the fight. I wouldn’t go so far as to call one stupid (I too was excited for this fight), but the fact is that the fight played out exactly as one might have expected, given the competitors respective strengths and levels of experience. Nelson wasn’t particularly active on the ground, but he did enough to earn a round 2 stoppage. Hence the question regarding your knowledge of the sport is relevant, if only to place your surprise at the fight into some perspective.
"Yeah we came up short today but I'm cool with things." -- Juan Pablo Montoya
fair enough.
I expected Roy to win, and I expected it would probably be on the ground. I didn’t expect it to be while inflicting almost no damage and without a submission.
I can’t knock Roy though. He not only won, but chose exactly how he was going to win, and did something that minimized the damage he took. He’s looking to win the show, not just one fight.
the amount of damage might have been minimal
but the position was overwhelmingly dominant.
It’s very similar to the position Matt Hughes used to finish B.J. Penn and had the camera angle been directly above Kimbo’s face while he was helplessly eating punches you might have a different view of how much damage was being inflicted.
I found the fight fairly dramatic as Kimbo landed some shots and even though he never had Roy in real trouble on the feet it was clear he had the edge standing. Kimbo’s ground game is just not anywhere near what it needs to be to grapple with someone like Nelson.
For comparison’s sake look at the fight from the first episode between Jon and Abe — Jon is an excellent wrestler but not that polished a grappler. He got takedowns but was then trapped in guard and had to batter Abe for the full two rounds to get a decision.
Nelson on the other hand immediately got dominant position (mount) and quickly improved to a completely dominating position — the crucifix (note also that Nelson predicted he would use that position before the fight) — where he could batter a completely helpless Slice.
It’s called technique and Nelson has it.
Follow me on Twitter @KidNate
I don’t disagree, but it is worth noting that in two Crucifix positions, he left not a signle mark on Kimbo.
He won and deserves credit, but it was hardly an impressive win. I am not a Kimbo fan by any means, but I did not see anything from Roy that was too impressive.
Take away the weight advantage and Kimbo would have gotten back to his feet in the first round.
Take away the grappling advantage and Nelson is totally screwed!!
Roy did exactly what he had to do to win and nothing more. It wasn’t exactly thrilling, but what do you want—he got a round 2 stoppage, and was on his way to winning an easy 2 round decision.
"Yeah we came up short today but I'm cool with things." -- Juan Pablo Montoya
all right, fair enough.
Boring isn’t a good description of the fight. I guess what I really meant was that I had hoped Kimbo wouldn’t have been so dominated on the ground.
But as I noted on the post-fight thread, I thought it more likely that the conversation about the “intelligent defense” rule was probably edited to make it look like it was before the fight.
Re: "Intelligent Defense"
Whenever that conversation actually took place, Jordan Breen raises an interesting point (as part of his ongoing quest against such a standard)
Also, when you see fighters gameplanning to exploit it, it proves “intelligent defense” alone is not an acceptable standard of defeat.

I actually want him to do good, but lets face it. It’s not happening. Kimbo will NEVER have a title in the UFC. He will never learn the ground game. Look at Houston Alexander, he’s been at it way longer than Kimbo and nothing.
Bottom line is that Dana is just as bad as other promoters out there and yeah, I would like him to hold the best MMA org in the world to a higher standard. You know, like he is always saying he does…

Winning a title is not the sole measure of success in the the realm of sports—especially not in fight sports, where most guys are worlds away from a title for their entire career and everybody knows it. If an athlete enjoys it enough to keep doing it and/or makes enough money at it to make it worthwhile, then they will probably continue, whether or not they are in title contention.
Promoters have their own matrix of incentives, which hardly need to be spelled out yet again.
"Yeah we came up short today but I'm cool with things." -- Juan Pablo Montoya
If dana starts headlining Kimbo on PPVs as the “best boxer in MMA and possibly boxing” then maybe your argument holds up. But this is a TV show. I guarentee Kimbo will be on some PPVs and will be promoted, but he won’t be an official main event and he wont be billed as something he is not. EliteXC made him out to be something he was not and I do not believe Dana is doing the same thing.

Fight promoters are hypocrites, that’s it. You can’t expect them to tell the truth all the time because they would be doing a shitty job.
Do you really think Fedor won’t go back on his “dana treats the fighters like shit” comments the second he gets in the UFC?
It’s how the business works, it’s a waste of your energy to get so upset about it, because it’s always going to happen.

harder

Roy has skills, but to have two dominant positions and do NO damage…not good.
He did exactly what he had to do to win the fight. He has a very proven track record and his career has been made, so far, on beating lower and mid tier HW’s and putting on good fights against top tier ones. Can’t blame the guy for cruising out a weird, 2-round reality show fight against a relative novice.

Inability to intelligently defend oneself
is the main criteria for a referee stoppage, not the amount of damage that has accrued.
by Scott Haber on Sep 30, 2009 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions
You have to be hurt to not be able to intelligently defend yourself. Kimbo’s inability to defend himself had more to do with positioning, he still had all his wits. Like I said Kimbo wasn’t going to get out of the crucifix the fight was all but over over, but pinning someone to the ground shouldn’t lead to a stoppage, this isn’t wrestling.
I forget who Joe Stevenson was fighting, but in one of his fights someone got him in a an omoplata and they just sat there for the last minute of the round. Joe couldn’t punch the guy because he couldn’t reach him (he wasn’t getting hit) but he wasn’t “intelligently defending himself” because he wasn’t doing anything to get out of the hold, so the fight shouldn’t have been stopped.
The ref is supposed to stop the fight to prevent the guy from actually getting knocked out, if you aren’t getting hurt, you don’t need to intelligently defend yourself.
It was Tibau
and you could also argue that Stevenson was intelligently defending himself, because he knew the omoplata wasn’t even close to tapping him, and he figured he could just sit there until Tibau gave it up.
by Scott Haber on Sep 30, 2009 11:19 PM EDT up reply actions
Maybe Roy should be a little embarrassed he wasn’t able to submit a relative neophyte. But otherwise, can he be blamed for implementing a basically foolproof strategy? It’s not his fault Kimbo couldn’t do anything to stop him. A more experienced fighter might have tried an escape that would have created an opening for a submission. Hell, I don’t know. But Roy had to know it would be a humiliating loss. So he played it safe. I’m cool with that.

true
I know there was little to no damage, but seriously how long can someone not “defend” themselves and not have the ref stop the fight, Kimbo was going no where and was doing absolutely nothing to improve.
But let’s say he wasn’t hitting him – how long would you have to immobilize somebody to get a stoppage. (And if he wasn’t hurting him, he might as well have not been hitting him,)

(And if he wasn’t hurting him, he might as well have not been hitting him,)
Not exactly true—he threw enough to prevent the ref from standing them up. Indeed, he convinced the ref to stop the fight.
Let’s say a guy is clearly winning the stand-up but isn’t throwing the kinds of shots that will end a fight—should the ref warn him for stalling?
"Yeah we came up short today but I'm cool with things." -- Juan Pablo Montoya
Man, I don't see nearly enough stallings
I would have DQ’d both guys in last week’s fight. Standing around hands on knees while the other guy wanders around catching his breath? No contest that shit.
Don't believe a word I say, I don't train BJJ.

That doesn’t exactly address the situation I posited above however. If a guy is slapping his opponent around, controlling the ring, and not taking any damage, it would be bad reffing to warn him—and he’d likely be on his way to a clear decision victory. Similarly, if a guy has a completely dominating position and his opponent is simply trapped, I don’t think that guy really has to do much for a ref to consider him active. It might not end the fight, and it might not win him many fans—perhaps most critically it will not please his bosses, especially in the UFC—but it seems valid enough for me.
It’s preferable that fighters look to end fights in addition to merely winning them, but I tend to give a lot of leeway, particularly when a guy thoroughly stymies his opponent. As Antonio McKee put it: “tf you can’t stop what I do than it’s kind of hard for me to stop doing it.”

Wow what a lame fight. Although of the three losers from team Jackson he was the best loser so no even if he his name wasn’t kimbo slice he would be comin back when that other dude gets hurt next week.

I think half those pitty pat gnp shots were hitting Roys belly.Props to him for doing just what he said. But why not put some nuts into those punches.

I’m not surprised one bit. People expecting more are kinda clueless. Well roy could have submitted kimbo, I wasn’t expecting a crusifix, but that’s it. The momement roy felt the heat on the feets he took it one the ground.
And why is dana bitching?
You don't look like a Tanaka.
Dana is bitching to help justify bringing Kimbo back.

If you want to bring Kimbo back with maximum oomph, you’d have to downplay the significance of the loss.
Kimbo is going to get absolutely creamed by any mainstream sports media that bothers to comment on it tomorrow, however, as will Nelson, the UFC, and MMA in general.

Because Dana is just as bad as “those fucking scumbags” from EXC.

the whole milking of kimbo’s return is kinda lame.. but.. Elite? i wouldn’t go that far. haha. :)

Eh that was just an example. Kimbo seems liek a alright dude but this isnt about cool down to earth guys. It would have been nice for Dana to have kept his word and only have real MMA fighter in UFC.

I think it had more to do with the way Roy was talking after
He only beat Kimbo. What’s with all the King talk?
The average viewer must hate nelson right now. Beating kimbo because your fat (probably all they understood) and asking for food, lol, they must hate him bad.

I think he was calling out Jerry Lawler.

I thought strikes to the Mohawk area were not permitted. If kimbo had tucked his chin to his chest, thats all roy would have been able to hit in the crucifix.
Face it Kimbo sucks and has always sucked.
QFT!
And I was rooting for the guy. Crazy what editing music and commercials can do to blind you.

You mean they would have had Roy lay on top of him just like they did with Kimbo? That’s blasphemy or something.

So...
…now that he lost, you won’t root for him anymore? BANDWAGONER!! (lol)
Seriously, though. That fight was disappointing BUT in retrospect, for a guy who came from fighting Tin Cans on the street, he did alright against tougher(and fatter) competition.
Now that said, he has a LOT of work to do to work on mat technique and defense.
I hope against better knowledge that Rampage would get over Roy being fat. By this time I think just about everyone watching has realised that Big Country is fat. The jokes might have been funny a few times but the shelf life has expired at least one episode ago. Not only that, but Rampage is making an idiot of himself by harping on the subject even during training. I don’t think Tiki was terribly impressed by how Rampage kept running his mouth about how certain mount escapes do not work because of…
Sheesh.
