BE Moderators—
You do a good job, and this is far and away the best MMA site I’ve ever stumbled across.
However, I do find it interesting that while you’re quick to stifle discussions of politics, religion, and even music, you don’t feel the need to step in when people are discussing whether they’d have sex with Kyra Gracie, or where to find good pictures of drunk women, or how Cristiane Cyborg looks like a man.
What gives?
religion and politics aren't really allowed to be talked about.. especially if it has nothing to do with MMA.
that has been clear from the beginning..

Nothing major, Nate just politely asked people to stop talking about music and stick to the topic at hand, MMA. Not an unreasonable request.

That’s what I like about BE – we can indulgence our tangents & digressions – the live blogs would suck if we didn’t BS through half of it. If the music was completely out of line (say, praising Nazi punk), I get it, else, I think it’s harmless fun (and better than yet another Fedor vs UFC argument, which is on topic).

Yes, but liveblogs are a lot different than posts about specific topics. I personally find it a bit off-putting when 40 comments out of the 90 on a particular post have nothing to do with the topic. I like the idea of a reminder now and again to stick to the issue at hand.
http://www.fourouncestofreedom.com
The night of Gina/Cyborg was hard on mods to get rid of all the bad posts regarding Cyborg…they were all over it though.
They kill those conversations because this is an MMA site for commenting on MMA or related articles, not a public forum.
I also know what you are talking about with the music thing, that happened earlier today. I was lost.

When the sex talk gets out of hand we hide posts and issue warnings but a little bit of red blooded enthusiasm for ones fellow human beings’ attractive qualities is fine.

There’s nothing tawdry to you guys about a prurient picture of a passed-out woman in a bath tub combined with “want to convince some bar skanks to get drunk enough to go home with you?” Forgive me for my uptightness, but I just don’t think rape is that funny. And it disturbed me to see it in a post from one of the site’s own official contributors. The ensuing discussion in the comments didn’t exactly improve matters, either.
If you took that seriously then you are probably in the wrong place.

get a girl tipsy so she’d be easier to convince to sleep with you, then that’s fair game. haha.
Mike Fagan obviously wasn’t talking about rape.. He just made a joke about the drinking game being able to help convince chicks to sleep you… and then he probably googled drunk girl to add as a picture..
JRN is reading too much into it, and is really missing the point. haha.

Yes. And so the juxtaposition of the picture of the passed-out woman with the talk about convincing “bar skanks” (oh those bar skanks, they deserve whatever they get, don’t they?) to drink enough to come home with you creeped me the hell out. Maybe it wasn’t an intentional rape joke; maybe it was totally unwitting. Frankly, I’m not sure which scenario is worse.
(And no, the fact that it was “just a joke” does not excuse anything. But props for dragging out that old chestnut, I guess.)

No talk of politics? Well what if Obama fought in an MMA match against Kim Jung Ill? Who would win?
for all intents and purposes, just consider all my posts as works of satire.
actually back when Putin was in charge of Russia you could legitimately mix politics and MMA. i always fantasized him calling out other world leaders to exhibition matches. i’m strange.
america woulda been screwed unless we could like bring teddy roosevelt back from the dead.
roosevelt was like the Roy Nelson. In physical build anyway. Abe Lincoln was like the Fedor.

It ends in an armbar or a strangle regardless.

if it's directly related to MMA it's viable
but generally when politics is relevant we only let people make one comment stating their opinion and move along, unless there’s a genuine dialogue going on.
Now if there’s a for real push for a fighter’s union, that’s going to be a no holds barred blood bath.

here they are (the order changes a little from time to time but this is the jist)
These are the guidelines we give to the moderators:
1) No name calling, no ethic or sexual slurs, requesting illegal steams — procedure, hide comments, issues one warning then ban
2) no threats, spoilers — procedure immediate ban, delete comments
3) discussing politics or religion — allow one statement of view point if relevant, procedure warn, delete/hide comments
4) don’t piss off the moderators

Agreed, however
I’ve been feeling a little unnerved by some recent trends, namely moderator(s) becoming increasingly touchy and almost reflexively defensive (I’m not gonna beat around the bush: specifically Nate). Additionally, several relatively recent bannings have left me questioning what the standards for discourse really are around here. I understand this whole site is nothing more than an immense labor of love (and one that I am very appreciative of), but I can’t help but feel that things are starting to unravel a bit around here.

Nate does to a ton of good for the site (the Judo Chops & MMA Histories alone are better than most anything else out there), but at times he seems to be quick to take offense. Maybe there behind-the-scenes drama I’m missing, but I wish everyone could be like Fonzi and chill the fuck out.

Agree as well.
It almost seems like if we’re quick to question a mod, we get on their shit list and things get real touchy. I only say this cuz just today I received a warning, for what I don’t know. The only things I can think of were me questioning Kid Nate’s warning to AlwaysRelaxing or me disagreeing with Leland’s assessment of Frank Mir’s fight against Big Nog. Neither of which, IMO, deserve a warning.
I love this site, I visit it every day and the articles are all quality. I just wish the mods could chill out a little bit and take criticism a little better. Hopefully me voicing this doesn’t get me booted from the site or the typical “you don’t run this blog, if you don’t like it then leave”, b/c I do appreciate the content and the intelligent discussion provided here.

Well, we aren’t really “moderators” in the traditional sense. The comments section functions something like a messageboard, but if “moderators” are offended it’s because they’re actually “writers” and the engine of this beast. How can they not be sensitive? It’s their passionate investment.
I know a lot of the more vocal folks in the community use a lexicon associated with messageboards, but candidly I will tell you I think that’s a bit of insult to the very talented staff here. And to me, this is a staff who not only produce high quality content hour after hour in aggregation and sharp opinion, but also have helped foster the very intelligent, mostly respectful communication culture now central to the comments section. How many of you have remarked just how refreshing it is at BE to be able to speak to other insightful fans without the trolling, obscenity or nastiness always part and parcel of the Sherdog or UG experience? Sure, we’ve got our problems and foibles, but generally speaking almost everyone agrees the community here is able to communicate and connect without the virtriol.
Well, why do you think it is the traffic and community can grow here without the values and expectations of conduct in the community ungluing themselves? Because we believe we have a whole lot of smart readers, the right ideas about what help fosters good conversation and a vigilent adherence to policing the ranks. You don’t get civility without a little heavy handedness.

It’s hardly that bad (this place makes Sherdog and the UG look like the eighth layer of hell), but I think things are slowly becoming too heavy handed.

Yeah, but they aren’t. I categorically disagree. The argument you’re offering is presented every two months, but neither myself nor any of the staff members who by responsibility of the job go through every single post, FanPost and FanShot to observe the discussion thinks things have taken a turn for the worse. I realize we may make some wrong calls here or there and I’m glad you’re vocalizing a concern. I’ll take it into account in the future, but I see very little evidence the moderation policy the staff here adopts and practices is stymieing otherwise reasonable conversation.

Let me translate Luke- Rundownloser, the late subo, AlwaysRelaxing, and a few others seem to think that they should be able to say whatever the hell they want and as long as it isn’t a direct insult or threat to someone else then it’s OK. They seem to be under the mistaken impression that since they have been here a while they should get a certain amount of leeway. What they don’t understand is that rules are rules and they apply to everyone equally whether you have been here a year or a day. You can’t please all of the people all of the time, obviously when you are talking about something as subjective as hiding comments and banning people there will be differences of opinion. With the amount of traffic to the site lately I’m sure there are a lot of jugement calls that you guys don’t have time to think a lot about, as long as you guys are simply doing what you think is in the best interest of the site then that’s all we can ask.
Walla walla walla I'm an idiot.
To put it more charitably:
Some of the posters are worried that any questioning of the editors will be seen as an immediate violation of Rule #4. Yes, you can make a very cogent argument that subo crossed the line by joking at Nate’s family, but what was the reason for iiowyn’s (temporary, thankfully) dismissal? When guys like AR or smoogy just act like jackasses, even if they have a legit gripe, I don’t miss them. I’m sure even subo could have come back had cooler heads worked it out (from the insinuations, it was quite messy behind the scenes). That reflexive banning of iiowyn worried many of us, and we feel that if we don’t speak up about what we perceive as a problem, it could get worse as the BE community grows.

You guys have to understand how hard it is to run a blog with this much traffic, especially during the live blogs where they are even more stressed about stuff..
iiowyn is back, so everything is peachy.. subo probably could’ve returned also, but there were some messy shit that really sealed the deal for him..
Also, people who are new here should know that it’s not stating your opinion that gets you in trouble, it’s how you say it.. people are welcome to disagree with anyone, including the staff, as long as you say it properly..
and one last thing.. people should relax a bit more.. we can all discuss MMA in a civilized manner no matter the difference in opinion right? :)

I know that it’s difficult keeping an ever-expanding website under control. iiowyn is back because once everyone calmed down, he & Nate apparently worked it out. That doesn’t justify why he was banned in the first place, which is a matter of concern for many of us.

I don’t want to speak for any of the staff but my guess is that we probably don’t see half the shit that gets hidden, deleted, whatever you want to call it, and it probably gets pretty fucking annoying. The bigger the site gets the more trolls wander into the comments section and the more work it is to keep this place halfway civilized. So I really can’t blame Nate if he’s on edge some of the time, this isn’t what pays his bills and puts food on his family’s table, this is something he does because he loves MMA, just like you and me. So cut the guy some fucking slack.

I have “cut the guy some fucking slack”. Firstly, I haven’t said anything even remotely harsh or meanspirited. In all, I think I’ve been pretty damn cordial in airing my criticisms. Secondly, this isn’t the first I’ve said regarding this issue to Nate: here is the email I sent to Nate almost a month ago:
Firstly Nate, I love bloodyelbow. I don’t say that lightly. I discovered the site after breaking my arm last october. I was shocked to find such an informed and passionate community discussing the sport that was fast becoming my obsession. After lurking for a couple months, I properly joined the site. Knowing you fine folks has been awesome; honestly, you guys were keeping me sane all those days I spent alone in my house, crippled and unable to find any sort of gainful employment. You, Luke, Brent, Eugene, Fagan, Cannon, Leland, Richard, Rome, and last (but most certainly not least) Chris have made a site that should be envied by every other blog community on the net. And though I don’t post nearly as much as I used to, my interest in the site has not diminished one iota.
That said, I must admit that I have been mightly unnerved by the recent bannings of subo and iiowyn. I’ve never been a subo acolyte. Though he and I are roughly in the same ballpark regarding our vision of the future of MMA, I’m not an immense fan of his often adversarial tone nor am I a fan of his nigh-on constant fanboyism. I’ll even admit that I wish he wouldn’t post so damn much. Nevertheless, I am not with you in banning him. I can see you being annoyed given that your wife was brought into the joking, but I still don’t believe the punishment matches the crime, especially given the context of the conversation. An even more crushing insult/joke seemed to be more in order.
Even more perplexing was the banning of iiowyn. I suspected that the subo ban was somewhat a “straw that broke the camel’s back” sort of situation; however, iiowyn was always a great guy. Outside of his genuine dislike and arguable harassment of Supremacy (who seemingly does everything in his power to court said treatment), I found him to be an eminently agreeable, reasoned, and intelligent poster with a notable and appreciated sense of humor. And if the comment that looks to have gotten him banned is all it takes to ban somebody, you’re gonna want to ban a whole lotta people soon.
I’ll get right down to it: Ever since the day that Barnett’s steroid test came back, several of the staff members, especially you Nate, have seemed really on edge. I imagine that the incredible amount of time you have to dump into this thing to keep it going is the principle reason (btw, it really does seem like an absolutely herculean effort). And although I sympathize, I think that rule #4 (aka “don’t piss off the mods”) has all of a sudden become a much higher standard than it once was. All told, I’m not comfortable with the recent bannings and the direction that they seem to be suggesting for the future of BE, and I figured that you’d appreciate a personal email more than a fanpost.
Sincerely,
Justin A. Cave
