Mendes goes high

Leozinho chokes Marinakis

The 1999 and 2009 Middle Heavy BJJ World Champions eye each other warily

Saulo proves he is still able to handle the young guns

Weidman gives Galvao a torrid time with choke attempt…

…after choke attempt

Lovato keeps his opponent close

Marcelo gets off to a flying start, but it wouldn’t last (and nor would the printing on his rashguard)

Beating Rani was one thing, but Joel Tudor finds Cobrinha in almost peerless form

Leozinho shows he isn't ready to quit the sport just yet...

...and thanks one of his inspirations

Drysdale and Jacare come to check if I got their good angles

Robert works from the back...

...but the Jacare prowls the mats once more

Fabricio Werdum conducts his fans

Monson starts well against Roberto "Cyborg"...

...but Abreu is relentless

...before stunning the crowd (and Monson) with a suplex

Xande reminds an impressive young pup that armbarring PE De Pano is one thing, but he is still the big dog at -98.9

Braulio hails his footlock win over Lovato

But is quick to offer support on realizing Rafael is injured

Saulo provides support of a different type to Rafael as he carries him to first aid

Avellan working a heel hook but Galvao is seemingly made of elastic

Garcia chokes Nakamura...

...and then confers with The General.

Cobrinha locks up Rani's arms...

...and Rani lets us know it hurts

Gone fromt he mats but not forgotten, reminders of Terere are to be found on the flesh...

...and on the cloth

Mendes let's Leozinho know he wants to be King

Jacare wishes Saulo good luck...

...and ten years on, Monson and Saulo (in a gi) get it on one last time

Saulo hunts for the victory...

...but cannot quite get the judges' decision and retires from competition, thanking all present and reminding them "This is my house. I built it."

With Rani and Leozinho both injured, Ryan Hall and Jeff Glover shoot out for 3rd...

...with Hall taking the podium spot

Braulio prepares to engage

Galvao wonders how bad his position is

Braulio becomes the under 87.9kg champion...

...and celebrates with his brother Vitor and Roger Gracie

Popovich secures the guard passage to finally beat Marcelinho...

...before carelessly conceding 9 points to his brother, Cyborg and Monson. A bit more than "Cem Kilos" to contend with

Mendes tries to do the unthinkable and submit Cobrinha

And tries....

And tries...

And tries....

And tries....

And tries...

Before consoling himself with a second win this year over Cobrinha

Braulio wastes no time armbarring the giant Finn Janne-Pekka Pietiläinen

Tom DeBlass and Andre Galvao ponder leg lock strategies

Icelandic phenom Gunnar Nelson considers his options...

...goes for broke...

...and stuns everyone with a win over a giant of the sport

Not bad for a brown belt

..even trying a last ditch Kimura as time runs out

Garcia's day goes from bad to worse as Braulio moves inexorably to the Absolute title

Fantastic stuff

Monson looks absolutely enormous with Gunnar on his back…pretty amazing that the kid pulled off the win.

I’ve heard that Marcelinho got screwed on points with Popovitch. Supposedly it should be a draw not 3-2… Anyone know something about this?

by dancingChicken on Sep 29, 2009 11:12 AM EDT reply actions

He didn’t get screwed on points, however… It appeared that Popovitch constantly was grabbing the material of the shorts and the sleeves of the rash guard which is illegal. Marcelo pointed this out actively to the ref a few times, Popovitch was warned once, nothing came of it.

Yeah, I saw grabbing the shorts on the video. But I’ve read that Fabio Grugel had an argument with judges because something was wron with scoring…

Haven’t heard that yet, hopefully it’s not a huge mishap. Scoring errors are surprisingly rampant in BJJ/Grappling tournaments, just usually they’re relegated to smaller shows… not the ADCC.

Not sure but arguably popovitch could have been docked a point for the shorts grabbing which is what I thought the issue was.

Great pictures. I truly enjoyed this event.

Pretty sure Terere is teaching again…

Hope he is, I wish he’d get back into the big shows. Terere was a freaking luminary.
