Hyping Kimbo Slice vs Roy Nelson on The Ultimate Fighter
Michael David Smith has some notes from today's TUF press call with Kimbo Slice:
"I'm a hard puncher trying to learn the ground game," Kimbo said. "You can do a lot, but you can't master anything in two years. In mixed martial arts, the more you roll the more you learn. It's something I'm working on."
American Top Team is known for its strenuous strength and conditioning program, which pushes its fighters through grueling workouts. Kimbo said he's in good cardiovascular shape and weighing about 230 pounds, and he said he'd be capable of dropping down to 205 pounds if the UFC asks him to become a light heavyweight.
"I'm a heavyweight," Kimbo said. "But if the promoters want me to come down, heck yeah I'd give it a try."
MMA Junkie focuses on a potential opponent for Kimbo at 205lbs -- Seth Petruzelli:
"If Seth signed with the UFC, and if Dana (White) and them want to match it up, damn right I'll run it again with him," Ferguson said. "We don't even need to do it in a ring. We can do it bare-knuckle style because I don't like liars. I've never turned down a rematch with anybody. Anyone I fought, I'll fight them again.
"It ain't personal. It's just the fact that it's bull [expletive]. No one ever said, 'Hey Kimbo, do you want to rematch Seth?' and I was like, 'No.' I've never said no to nothing. Not like that. Not to him."
Also don't miss the hype video for the Kimbo Slice vs Roy Nelson fight that will air on Wednesday.
And here's Roy Nelson talking to MMA Weekly about why Kimbo wasn't his first choice of opponent:
"Me and Kimbo, we talked about it, like how much money we would have potentially lost by fighting actually on the show," stated Nelson. "We could have headlined shows just by ourselves. So it's actually kind of funny to go that route, but I'm glad that we did it. I think it's probably going to be Spike's number one show by far than even the premier.
"I think it's going to be the fight of The Ultimate Fighter, and then it just gets better because after that you get to see the drama of what happens to me and Kimbo living in the same room together."
UPDATE: Jonathan Snowden gets Kimbo talking about how he got started in the fight game:
"The very first fight, when I got a couple hundred dollars-that was big," Slice said. "That's when I decided to do this for a living. This is another way. I could start robbing, start selling dope or some shit like that. I didn't want to do that. My old girl, my mother, she wasn't with that. I couldn't get caught stealing something from somebody's house. Not with a mother like mine. This was an opportunity. I could take my ass to work and do it the honest way...What we did was raw. There was no training. It was just straight war. I'm coming right into your back yard. I'm gonna knock a nigga's ass out, leave his blood on the ground. And I'm dippin."

Kimbo is quickly winning me over.
I can easily forsee the fight on Wednesday being a bloodbath war with Big Country locking on an armbar or some shit at the end.

BigEgo Nelson
I like Roy but his ego seems a bit out of kilter. I think he’s the best qualified guy on the show but if his shit was so rosey smelling shouldn’t he have a contract already? Can’t wait for the fight though, maybe these guys will have some cardio endurance.

I wonder if Kimbo gets an elbow or shouder wrecked by a sub but manages to keep the fight going til the final bell.
How cool would that be? Kimbo lands some standing, Roy takes him down rips his shoulder out, Kimbo gets back on his feet trying to fight w/ only one arm.

That would be badass...
as the end of a Kimbo movie, but I hope he doesn’t get his shoulder ripped out on TUF. maybe in an actual UFC fight because he’d have time to recover, but not in TUF.
We know he doesn’t of course, because he’s fighting in the finale in December, but ya know.

This matchup is a classic Zuffa win-win
Either guy will absorb the loss well because of his opponent’s notoriety.
On the other hand neither Nelson nor Furgeson looks good losing to a low profile guy in the first round.

“This fight is very exciting," said Slice. "This is probably, I would say, not hands down, but pound-for-pound a good fight, one of my best fights…I was impressed with my performance. I was impressed with everything. I’m not crying about nothing."
Sounds like Kimbo loses a decision, but it’s a helluva fight.

If Kimbo is willing to drop to 205 if needed, he’s already showing he’s a company man – Dana likey.

He is pretty big for 205, seems like it would be a big cut.
by xDieseLx on Sep 28, 2009 6:18 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Training with Top Team and getting guys around him to teach him how to cut the weight the right way, I don’t think he’d have a problem cutting at all.

It would be even easier @ Greg Jackson’s…

he sprained his ankle
a few days out from the fight and couldn’t do the workouts he needed to do to lose the weight before cutting.

Then he wont fight Jardine, Evans or half the other 205ers.

All Kimbo has to do to make 205 easy is drop some of that mussle mass in his upper body.

I find it Interesting
That UFC puts on a Press conference for a fight that already has an outcome. The last episode really set up a win-win situation like Casey commented above, but really only for Kimbo. If he loses in honorable fashion he has the scapegoat from last week, he doesn’t know shit, but is a quick learner. Remember last week, Kimbo, good guy, quick learner, eager, a sponge, Roy Nelson, fat, lazy, know-it-all loner, seasoned vet. It is a perfect editing room set-up for Kimbo!

at least I think it was … won’t know for sure until I see the result. Either way, spoilers suck.

Maybe kimbo is happy with the one punch he landed in the preview. Maybe he is happy he kept his gun in the locker this time.

Seth responds on the UG:
lol @ sissy ice cream shop. my bad for thinking ahead of fighting and opening a smoothie king franchise. kimbo wouldnt know the first thing about opening and running a successful business. he should stick to what he knows…being a ghetto thug and hanging with icey “class act” mike
and i was told by 2 promoters that they talked with his manager and that he said NO. so either the promoters were lying or he is

See Seth, the problem is...
Those promoters weren’t Dana White and their promotion wasn’t the UFC, which was the only place Kimbo could go to make any semblance of the money he received from EliteXC. I have a feeling if Kimbo or I ever said “no” it was because they didn’t feel like fighting for $2,500 in front of 300 people.
Hope you understand,

^ This
Kimbo isn’t going to fight on some rinky-dink local show in Florida for $5K/$5K. The guy has too many options open to him to waste his time fighting for that kind of money. Honestly, I think he is crazy for going on TUF. He could be Bob Sapp version 2.0 over in Japan and get paid enough to fill a swimming pool with yen.

i respect the dude for making some money on the side, but that guy mentions his damn smoothie king shop in almost every interview he does.

Please Seth loves the attention from his Kimbo win more then anybody its actually sickening how much he gloats about it. Just look at his dam screen name on the UG – The Guy That KO’d Kimbo WTF the way he goes on about that KO you would of thought it was Fedor and not Kimbo !!!!

I can't understand what Kimbo is saying for a good portion of the update.
Is he talking about chewing tobacco in the last sentence? I guess I’m not raw enough.

Kimbo's 205 fight....
Give him Anderson Silva as his first 205er…I think that be a huge draw not as big has say him vs brock but a good draw nonetheless
