Quinton Jackson Provides Further Thoughts on His Retirement

6a00d8349f951869e2010536e5be53970c-320wi_mediumMMA Bay has more from Quinton Jackson.  It seems to me like he's already thinking about going back on his retirement, but it's worth reading his thoughts in full.  Here's a snippet:

"The bottom line is I’m thinking, ‘What should I do?’ My family is standing behind me 100% and my kids are too young to even care. All my kids know is I’m always gone and I’m not spending much time with them and I even asked my dog how does he feel and my dog said, ‘Who the hell are you, I don’t know even know you no more. I don’t even know you, why you even talking to me?’ My dog just looked at me, licked his nose, lit up a fart and walked out my room."

"Everybody knows I’m doing this A-Team movie and now I’ve got a lot of other movie offers and it’s for big money. So I’m thinking, ‘What should I do? Should I let an organisation disrespect me, tell me what I can’t do, make loads of money off me and call me a baby?’ I love the fans. I really do love the fans and I’m thinking, ‘Should I go out there and give them what they wanna see?’ The fans buy the Pay-Per-Views, they give you the strength to go out there and put on a show because their cheering for you but I’ve grown to like making movies. This movie is really fun, I get to shoot people and that something I’ve never done before because I’m too nice of a guy. But every time I shoot somebody I see Rashad’s face over and over, like I get to shoot Rashad thousands of times and it’s fun. I get to beat people up. I can put anybody’s face on them and beat the hell out of them.

"People are coming up to me with all these other movies and I’m thinking, ‘Man, do I really wanna bust my ass in training every day, have all these injuries, worries about whether I look good and whether I’m going to win?’ I don’t have that with the movies, I already know what’s gonna happen, it’s scripted so there’s just no worries. At the end of the day I go home, I can just kick back and enjoy myself. But I can’t lie, my heart is with fighting. When I meet my good fans on the street and they say, ‘Oh man, you’re the reason why I got into the UFC’ or I see a fan wearing my t-shirt it, means a lot to me. It means a lot to me that the fans like m e and my fighting style and I really respect that. That’s a part of fighting that would keep me there and keep me motivated."

There's a lot to unpack here, but I think it's worth noting that nobody has really considered the possibility that he has multiple offers and isn't leaving fighting just for one movie.

Quinton Jackson has never lied about his motivation for fighting.  For years he's said the same thing: he fights for the money.  He's inexplicably good at fighting considering his weak training camps and unwillingness to train seriously; one wonders how good he would be if he had the work ethic of someone like Georges St. Pierre.  But that's not Quinton.  His heart isn't in fighting the same way GSP's is.

There's a lot more over at MMA Bay about his motivations and thoughts on the future.  I am positive he will return to fight Rashad Evans in the Spring, but after that, who knows?  If he really does have multiple movie offers, it might make sense to take the Rashad pay day and then go pursue those options.

I hope he just sticks with acting and gives it his 100%, if he does become a big draw at the box office it will be good for MMA in general. Cung Lee just didn’t cut it niether did Randy Couture with his Scorpion crap. Maybee Rampage becomes the next Will Smith?

for all intents and purposes, just consider all my posts as works of satire.

I agree, Rampage has a thing with cameras, I hope he does well.

Does he think he will be home more with acting?

To be successful there, just as in fighting, you need to be working constantly…at least as someone new to the industry.

I’d question whether or not he has multiple movie offers, or just alot of people running into him on the set, etc…saying how he should be in there film, etc…probably a world of difference. I doubt he would be that hot of a commodity in Hollywierd until A Team comes out and every sees how well it does and how well he comes across.

by Razreshat on Sep 28, 2009 11:14 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He probably got many offers. The question is, are they any good? Maybe they sent him shitty script for straight to dvd movies like every MMA related movie we’ve seen so far.

To be successful there, just as in fighting, you need to be working constantly…at least as someone new to the industry.

I don’t know, training camps can go full three months away from family (if you take it seriously). I don’t think that would be the same thing with movies, even movies where you have to travel (such as Pirates of the Caribbean and Braveheart), you can bring your family along because it won’t influence on the results, whereas in fighting it could.

I’d question whether or not he has multiple movie offers, or just alot of people running into him on the set, etc…

that’s a good question, but I don’t think he’s lying or exaggerating. Rampage never struck me as a lier.

by orcus on Sep 28, 2009 11:49 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It’s going to take a lot of work on Rampage’s part to have anyone but himself flying his family out to the set to be with him while he’s filming.

In the end, I think that’s why he’ll be back. Yes, Dana called him a baby, boo hoo. But in the UFC, he was a big fish. He was in tight with the boss, and could get away with almost anything. In Hollywood, he’s just another guy trying to work his way up the ladder. He’s already put the effort in with MMA to get to the top, he’d have to start all over again in Hollywood.

by Phildo on Sep 28, 2009 11:52 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh no, I mean traveling overseas. He can move to Hollywood and see his family everyday (I don’t mean it on the set itself), he can see his family when he comes home. While in a long training camp he can be away from his family for a long period of time, without seeing them that often. That’s the big difference. He will begin his movie career from the bottom for sure, but as he said, he doesn’t have that many years left in him to fight, he’s looking out for his future. If this movie does well though that can be a huge break for him. Many actors become big time actors because of one role (I’m not saying this is the case here, but it could be, only time will tell).

Many, many movies do shoots on location, and filming a movie is probably a much more hectic time than a fight training camp.

It doesn’t make sense for him to leave unless he is getting good roles in the movies, and getting good roles in movies requires serious time commitments and ridiculous hours.

by Phildo on Sep 28, 2009 12:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I just never hear complaints from actors of staying away from their family for long periods of time unless they’re filming a trilogy (I think I heard something like that with Lord of the Rings and The Matrix II and III). But in contrast, this complaint is usually made by a lot of fighters. Even Rampage has said that one of the reasons he wants to shift into acting is mostly because he wants to be part of his kid’s life. I think there is a big difference in time spent with family in the two businesses.

To my point and to all the pansies who shy away from race discussion: All I will say is go to imdb.com and cull out all the movies being released to theater in the next 12 months in the US and collect the cast list for each one.

Count how many are black and how many are white… compare this with US population statistics.

If that doesn’t cut it for you turn on your TV on primetime and flip through the major network channels. Count how many white actors you see versus Black…. again compare this number to population statistics… yeah it’s just as bad.

I dont want to make this a race discussion but you see how hard it is for a black man to make it in Hollywood?

which brings me to repeating Phildo’s point: Rampage already made it… and it was hard. If you think about it – THE HARDEST PART FOR HIM IS ALREADY OVER – it makes no sense to throw that equity away.

I know

that MMABay supposedly has connections to Wolfslair, but for some reason this whole interview seems fishy to me. It just doesn’t sound like a Rampage interview (and MMABay has been known to fabricate interviews before)

If it’s legit tho, I agree completely. Page obviously wasn’t in fighting for the money, as he’s been fighting long before the sport blew up.

He should “end” his career fighting rashad. There is serious money to be made for him and the UFC. People will buy this PPV, considering TUF, the bad blood, and it being sold as rampage’s last fight. They can fill the card with shitty fights they will still make huge numbers.

I officially could not care less about this shit any longer. If he fights Rashad, I’ll be first in line to watch it, but I’m not going to hold my breath.

I definitely expect him to be in the Octagon some time in 2010. It is what it is.

I think Rashad Evans said it best,

he’s a really sensitive dude.

rampage has some serious mental issues

I know he’s joking around, but damn, even as a joke that’s kinda weird lol.

by orcus on Sep 28, 2009 11:52 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I was more concerned about his comments on shooting people and seeing Rashad's face.

Or that he hasn’t shot someone before because he’s too nice of a guy…

by Razreshat on Sep 28, 2009 12:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

well

that could be taken as truth though, given that he hates Rashad hehe, but talking to your dog makes him delusional…

Rampage has at least 2 more big paydays left…

Rashad and the 205 title. The probability of him beating Rashad is high… Machida not so much. So he see’s 2 pay days left and he wants to play games to maximize those paydays.

Im not saying it’s on purpose but this movie deal sure makes it more “convenient” to renegotiate.

Zuffa called his bluff and gave Rashad another potential fight so Rampage started crying… now his first big payday has been cut significantly.

The movie deal is no joke… this is the biggest role any MMA fighter has ever received… the pay isnt great but the potential for money in the sequels (which is highly likely to happen) are good. Parlaying this type of role into a successful acting career is highly unlikely though. The most he makes from movies and his acting career will be around 3-4m (assuming there’s 2 more sequels) and this is in a time span of around 5 years.

He can make more than that in 1 year fighting in the UFC. If there’s only one sequel he would have made more in the Rashad fight than his entire career as Mr. T.

Rampage overplayed his hand and it got bit.

by mmalogic on Sep 28, 2009 11:50 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

If anything, Quinton will have to tone down his Rampage schtick if he is serious about making it in acting. The kind of antics he’s famous for – humping a reporter’s leg etc – might not go down in Hollywood quite as well as they have in MMA. Especially since he won’t be the big fish in the little pond in the acting business.

by lhasafi on Sep 28, 2009 11:56 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

What he did was cool and funny in Japan. Weird and awkward in America, kinda-sorta . . . but yeah, that won’t fly in Hollywood. They won’t get it or understand.

I’m sorry. I just don’t see Rampage becoming some huge box office star. Dwayne Johnson is not a huge box office star and he actually has some acting chops. Rampage can probably act pretty well if he is playing a character very similar to himself or the Rampage persona but that is as far as I am willing to go. He is definitely no Will Smith. In fact, this is a ridiculous comparison.

The roles Rampage is being offered and will be offered are probably along the lines of “bad guy # 2” and “bodyguard #1” or Fighter #3 in “Never Back Down Again” etc. I certainly don’t see him starring opposite Jennifer Aniston in the next big romantic comedy.

My guess is, right now Rampage is being made a lot of promises by the slimy Hollywood director/agent types but as soon as he has his first flop, the money will dry up and all these offers will disappear. Then he can get back to what he is good at.

remember

Will Smith only used to get comedy roles, he didn’t break into drama until recently.

by orcus on Sep 28, 2009 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Define recently

Bad Boys and Independance Day were more action but he did Ali in 2001 and I dont consider that recent anymore and The Legend of Bagger Vance was a drama and in 2000.

has it been that long? I guess so, but I started counting real movie roles deserving of acclamations beginning with The Pursuit of Happiness. But those action movies you mentioned were action movies but he got the role by being the “funny guy”.

Props to Rampage.

IMO he’s slipping in the ring so it is best to go out on top than to hang on. Have all your senses and respect. Movies > getting punched in the face

However like all fighters he will be back eventually.

If Rampage really wants to get into character as Mr T for this movie he needs to “quit all the jibba-jabba”. Seriously even Tito doesn’t write this many long winded speeches about himself.

I honestly don’t care if he retires or not anymore I just wish he would stop whining about it. Heck even the guys own dog seems to be getting tired of hearing it.

I am just worried this A-Team movie will be like Land of the Lost movie. Just another cheap piece of shit to play off of peoples love for nostalgic things.

People can’t get off side tangents about if he will be a movie star, how this movie will do, etc. Amazing.

I’m going to laugh and laugh if Thiago Silva beats Rashad and ruins all of this.

The logical move for Quinton is to film this movie, and then take the Rashad fight in Spring. That is what will happen. After that, we will see what kind of offers he has, but it may make a lot more sense to go film a bunch of movies than go lose badly to Lyoto Machida in a fight that won’t even draw that well.

If the movie career bombs, he’ll be back in the UFC quickly, and I’m sure Dana will welcome him back. Same guy who took Tito back, BJ back, Randy back, and now even giving signs he wants Frank back.

by Michael Rome on Sep 28, 2009 1:41 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Its pretty solid logic that the film is a good move.

But that doesn’t mean that we should be surprised that Dana and the UFC are upset that he is messing up a main event that he contracted to fight in.

If the movie does well, it could do alot for both Rampage AND the UFC if he continues to fight, but that doesn’t make it any less of a jerk-off move to pull this when he is committed to fight Rashad after all the investment of the TuF season.

by Razreshat on Sep 28, 2009 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The Thiago Silva fight is going to be a tough one and man that could really end up slamming the door on Rampage getting a big earning fight. We see these kinds of missed opportunities all the time in the sport, if you don’t strike while interest is there then later may be too late.

by who me on Sep 28, 2009 3:57 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

Right, until they run into another situation where they have no big fights and beg him to come back. He has plenty of big fights down the line that could all come up while he’s gone.

The Thiago Silva fight is beyond a stupid fight to book on the UFC’s side.

by Michael Rome on Sep 28, 2009 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Rashad had to fight Silva, he was one of the few guys left that Jardine had already fought that Rashad hadn’t.

Walla walla walla I'm an idiot.

by ufc4 on Sep 28, 2009 6:28 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

Light Heavyweight is a loaded division and that also will work against Rampage, I mean the UFC has shown time and time again that they can come up with something of value even in the off months for PPV. If Rampage isn’t serious about the sport then they will be ok without him and the longer he is out of the sport the more his value in the sport drops. He is right about one thing, he isn’t no Randy Couture, his MMA career definitely has a shelf life to it.

I don’t see the Thiago Silva fight as being stupid at all, it’s a sign that in the UFC life is going on without Rampage Jackson. He stepped out and they put in a fight that also has title implications for Rashad Evans.

by who me on Sep 28, 2009 7:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

By the way, I’ll be doing a post on this later, but here’s a little illustration of how too many shows is fucking up the UFC at 2 shows a month, let alone 3.

New Year’s show proposed lineup: Vitor-Anderson, Nate-Dan, Rashad-Thiago Silva

New Year’s show if they did 1 PPV a month: BJ-Diego, Vitor-Anderson, Nate-Dan, MIr-Kongo, FLorian-Guida.

Second card blows away the first, and doesn’t force you to risk Rashad in a stupid, stupid fight.

by Michael Rome on Sep 28, 2009 1:49 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

If Rashad wants to fight, he should fight.

With reshoots, the earliest pos date would be April. He has reshoots in Feb (and can’t do anything that would bruise or injure him) and would not be able to start training until late Feb. May would be more likely.

So does Rashad want to sit around until May?

by Lynchman on Sep 28, 2009 7:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I wish he would just quit or stick with the ufc and stop writing a novel. I love him but don’t want to hear anymore about why he is leaving.

by cagefightonacid on Sep 28, 2009 1:58 PM EDT via mobile reply actions   0 recs

NOBODY is going toss real money at Jackson until they see how he works out.

Even prior to the cut belt tightening going on in Hollywood, newbies did not get big money until producers actually saw how they did on screen and whether or not they were a pain in the ass.

It could be Page or it could be his agent blowing smoke. Interest? Maybe, but he does not have big offers on the table.

Actors with proven track records are taking less these days.

I’m thinking of a Kimbo/Brock/Rampage ppv, after the movie does well….think of the numbers. Add in one part Tito, one Randy, and Chuck with his new found footwork. Biggest sales ever.

Like it would ever happen
