Rashad Evans Wants to Train With Kimbo Slice at Greg Jackson's MMA

This Fan Post was promoted to the front page by Nick Thomas.
In the next episode of the Ultimate Fighter 10, Kimbo Slice will face the former IFL heavyweight champion, Roy Nelson. Even before we know the results, the UFC seem to be pretty impressed with Kimbo's performance. So much so, that Rashad Evans, who coached against Kimbo and Team Rampage, wants to train with him at Greg Jackson's camp:
"Are you going to see Kimbo Slice fight again in the UFC? Yes," Dana White said.
Asked if that was a decision based on the first episode's ratings, White said: "No, never. The ratings do not influence our decision. The guy can either fight or not."
White said one of the strongest endorsements he received about Slice's skill in the octagon came from former light-heavyweight champion Rashad Evans, who's a coach in the show and told White he wants to continue working with Slice at his elite MMA training compound directed by respected trainer Greg Jackson in New Mexico.
"We've been very impressed with Kimbo's performance," added UFC owner Lorenzo Fertitta.

What exactly does Rashad mean by saying “he wants to continute working with Slice?” When has Evans trained with Kimbo?

Kimbo is a heavyweight and Rashad is LHW so they wouldn’t fight anyway.

this is a question – forgive me for asking it because i feel like i missed something.
Evans says, ‘He wants to continue working with kimbo….’. Yes?
Continue…? i thought kimbo was already on Rampage’s side during this season?
so what happened?
when someone says they want to continue training… i would presume they had a past of training together… or am i just reading too much into this?
by Ronnie Liddle on Sep 28, 2009 5:31 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Think you’re reading too much into it , he just wants to train with Kimbo (tho who knows , maybe Kimbo switched teams in the season but honestly who cares…)

The guys in the house still look pretty low in talent i mean roy nelson was the best guy in there. I dont care if Greg Jackson takes him under his wing. I still dont think he could beat over half of the UFC HW roster let alone the champ Brock Lesnar.

You make it sound like that’s a bad thing, Nelson might be the most accomplished fighter to ever appear on TUF.

or loses but puts on a war
reading Roy’s recent comments, it sounds like he respects Kimbo’s game a lot more now than he did before, even saying he’d have liked it for the Kimbo fight to be the last fight on the show, because he wanted to be injury free for the rest of the program. I’m guessing this is going to be a war, and this is the reason so many are giving Kimbo his props in the house.
by orcus on Sep 28, 2009 10:34 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
yeah
hard to tell the outcome of the fight, it could certainly go either way. Based off of what Rashad said about continuing to work with Kimbo, I wonder if something happens in the season where Kimbo switches teams? That’s happened before if I recall.

sure
As long as Dana backs him, all of the sudden the majority of the MMA community respects Kimbo… go figure :?
by orcus on Sep 28, 2009 10:36 AM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
Or, as an outside chance, it could be...
that Kimbo has done exactly what Dana said he needed to do to get into the UFC, which was go on TUF and do well.
Considering that they keep contestants on the show for the duration to help train, this is/was a great opportunity for Kimbo to both learn more MMA from some great fighters/camps, but to also show Dana and the UFC/MMA world how serious he is about being a solid MMA fighter.
I’ve been critical of Kimbo in the past, but if he takes this “tuff” route to the UFC and earns it, more power to him.

“that Kimbo has done exactly what Dana said he needed to do to get into the UFC, which was go on TUF and do well.”
Silly.
It’s amazing to me that Dana villified this guy and had the whole MMA community behind him in doing so, then suddenly signs him to the UFC through some “difficult” path through TUF.
Eff right off with that. An invite to TUF basically means you’re making it to a UFC card no matter what. Dana white went back on every comment about Kimbo he ever made and gave the guy an easy ticket right into the UFC while simultaneously convincing the entire MMA community again that he wasn’t full of shit. And once again, so many of you people are buying into it.

I’m gonna go ahead and call bullshit. Even if he sucks, if Kimbo went to Strikeforce he’d up their numbers by a shitload. The UFC is going to ride the Kimbo train for as long as possible.

The UFC is going to sign Kimbo for this reason alone. They signed Herschel Walker for christ sake to boost there press and exposure. Kimbo wouldn’t been out of a job for 5 seconds before Croker calls and signs him up. UFC is not only playing offense anymore but also playing defense. The more fighters they sign and stars they keep the worse off strikeforce will be.

1st, Kimbo will LOSE to Roy.
2nd, ratings have EVERYTHING to do with it.
3rd, no doubt that Kimbo wants to get better, but I would guess trying to get him to Jackson’s is a way to try and improve him so the UFC can use him on ppvs.
I would guess that just about any HW on teh UFC roster would beat Kimbo right now. The thing is, spending the next year intensely training at Jackson’s and treating him as the project that he always has been, could pay off for Kimbo and the UFC.
It amazes me, how many people are jumping on the Kimbo bandwagon due to an edited reality show. I hope he does well, but we need to lay off the Kool-aid.

Bullshit, In the first episode Rashad said he wasn’t impressed with Kimbo, that’s why he didn’t choose him, now suddenly he wants to “work” with him.
Seems like Jackson’s Five want some of Kimbo’s bread…

This.

Of course it’s impossible, what a silly question…
To me it looks like another part of Kimbo hype, but of course I could be wrong…and Tiki and Page could’ve taken Kimbo to another level of MMA in just 4 weeks (“be better Kimbo!; learn submissions Kimbo!, do something Kimbo!”)
But hey…Rashad’s “boy” McSweeney trains at Jackson’s Five, so maybe he doesn’t have high expectations…
…and Kimbo is a sponge, which is cool, because he can soak all of Greg’s brilliant gamplans…
by dancingChicken on Sep 28, 2009 11:44 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
There’s nothing anywhere that even implies that they’re only doing it for the hype.
They saw him in training at the beginning of TUF. They saw him in at least 1 fight at TUF. who knows what or where Kimbo has been since the show filmed?
There are plenty of reasons besides hype why Rashad could say this. You assuming that it’s for the hype with very little to back you up.
by Phildo on Sep 28, 2009 11:50 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Rashad has no interest in hyping Kimbo, the things I’ve been saying about him are not as serious as you think…
From what I understand, the info about Rashad wanting to work with Kimbo came from Dana White (followed by "I’m impressed… " by Lorenzo), who also said that Kimbo in UFC is not a matter of ratings…that’s sounds like hype to me…which I’m cool with, because White is a promoter and that’s his job.
I’m saying it’s all hype, because all the atmosphere surrounding Kimbo is like he’s such a great, fast learning fighter and not because he’s a big draw.
by dancingChicken on Sep 28, 2009 12:21 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
How long has Kimbo been training MMA? A guy with enough athletic ability to get offers from The U cant learn a basic sprawl/submission defense by now? Im sure he has a basic guard/roll/get to your feet game by now.
