Local Bars Choosing Not to Show UFC PPV Events Due to Increased PPV Pricing? [Update]
I run a group through Meetup.com that gathers and watches UFC PPV events at local bars and pubs in the Washington, DC area. Recently, I found out that several bars in my area have opted to stop showing the UFC events because Joe Hand Promotions, the exclusive commerical distributor of UFC PPV events in the U.S., has (according to my contact at a local bar) "nearly doubled the price" of ordering UFC PPV's.
Here is an explanation of how it works from David Nelmark on MixedMartialArtsBlog.com:
While a residential viewing of a UFC PPV typically costs $44.95 ($54.95 in HD) it costs much more for a bar to order the event. Commercial establishments are charged based on their seating capacity. For example, a restaurant that holds 150 people will pay around $1000 to show the broadcast. Some places try to get around that fee by using an illegal "black box" to steal the signal or just by hooking up a dish and trying to get the event at the residential rate. That's where Joe Hand comes in.
When we had our first event as a group I convinced a friend of mine who was the Events Coordinator for a small bar in NE DC called The Cardinals Nest to show UFC 90. She agreed to give it a try on the condition that I did all the leg work in terms of ordering the PPV. I called Joe Hand Promotions and was quoted a price around $1200. Not a bad price considering the boxing PPVs were almost twice that amount at the time.
Shortly after that we found a well-known and popular sports bar in Washington, DC that was accommodating to our group and showed every UFC PPV. We as a group have been regulars there nearly every month (occasionally changing to a bar in Northern Virginia for variety) for the past year and have subsequently developed quite a relationship with them.
We were saddened to hear from the bar this past week that they are considering no longer showing the UFC PPVs because Joe Hand Promotions has nearly doubled the price of ordering UFC PPVs through them. I tried calling other bars in DC to find out if they were showing the PPVs and found several places with the same story. They USED to show them but because of the increase in price they can no longer afford to do so.
Unfortunately, due to the size of our group places like Hooters can not possibly accommodate us. We can have anywhere from 15-30+ members show up for a given event depending, of course, on the event itself.
My question is, how many of you have experienced this in your area? Bars or restaurants that showed the UFC PPVs that have either suddenly started a cover, increased the cover charge to get in during these events or worse, stopped showing them all together. I have every intention of sending an inquiry to Joe Hand Promotions to find out more about this. There may be fees they are incurring on their end that I may not be aware of that are causing these price increases.
I appreciate any feedback you guys can offer!
Update:
I spoke with someone at Joe Hand Promotions and they let me know that the PPV prices have NOT been raised. The places I inquired about had been reporting a smaller capacity to get the lower price for the PPVs and were found out. So their prices went up based on their true capacity. Bah. When will people ever learn that cheaters only prospers SOMETIMES.

I have experienced many bars in general not showing PPV’s anymore due to the economy. Probably has something to do with this:
The risks of getting caught might seem small, but Joe Hand is actually quite vigilant about tracking down violators. In the last 12 months in just the United States District Court for the Southern District of Iowa (my home district), Joe Hand has filed thirteen lawsuits against bars and restaurants that allegedly had unauthorized broadcasts.
pure speculation on my part:
but when i hear the talks the UFC makes about considering raising the price of their PPVs, when you look at the price on their merchandise, they can be a bit greedy when it comes to money and not realize that the common man can not afford what they’re putting out.
now i’ve got a group of between 9-16 people come over to my house to watch UFC events, so its anywhere between $3-5/person, and thats affordable. but if you go to UFC.com and price their merchandise that they want to help brand you as a fan… its ridiculous.

If the members of my group were close personal friends
I would definitely invite them over to my place to watch, but the group is run through Meetup.com which means most of the people I don’t know personally. I don’t want to invite people over my house that I don’t know. sigh

The bar I go to charges $5. Not a bad deal when they have big screens all over the place.
I don’t think I know 10-15 people near me that watch MMA so the bar is the only affordable option. There are tradeoffs, like you usually can’t hear the broadcast and you have to pay more for beers than I would if I watched it at home, but watching with a crowd is more fun in my opinion than watching at home with just 3-4 people.

This is about a 5 minute walk from my house.
Really?
Awesome. Did you ever go to The Nest? It was a little bit of a dive but my best friend worked there so I was there often.

I go there very occasionally. I mostly do my drinking at home. I got sick of the PPV scene in DC for UFC fights sucking, so I splurged on a TV.

Really Luke? By yourself? When you’re feeling down? You know the first step is admitting you have a problem.

DONT FEAR…. UFC COMING TO A THEATER NEAR YOU :)
you wanna see UFC on a monster screen with all the doohickies, eating nachos, while peewee herman is jerking off in the corner, do ya? Dont fret… once Mayweather/JMM numbers are confirmed on the big screen it’s all corn chips, goobers and semen from there.
Yes it’s with the same distributor Golden Boy uses…
Yes Zuffa has the exclusive on MMA content with the deal…
So no you wont be seeing the announcement copied and pasted as a fanpost by mmasupremacy.
So what would be the first ppv on the big screen if you had to guess

So, you guys admire the way Golden Boy was able to use their promotional prowess to get a record number of PPV buys for Mayweather vs Marquez and said, doh, why didn’t WE think of that. =)

No it’s more like let others spend their money and time to test different things then copy what works (if it really confirms to have worked), ditch what doesn’t and MAKE IT BETTER.
If it makes you feel good knowing Golden Boy opened the door… have at it, because it surely makes Zuffa feel great knowing it will make way more money with this than it does Golden Boy. LOL

Oh Snap...
You laughed 3x’s more after your initial laugh.
Golden Boy probably only effectively laughed 1x after this past weekend at you guys, but you showed them and now laugh 3x’s more and MADE IT BETTER.

just thought I'd throw this out here...
before Twitter (about 2 years ago) I tried to send Dana/UFC several emails on having the fights available in movie theatres or at least promoting the fights during the previews – I don’t know if he ever got the emails because no one responded and I didn’t get a return email

I live in the DC area
The only place that always charges me is Bailey’s in Ballston, and that’s $5. Chics N Wings, Hooters, Velocity Five, and First Down haven’t charged me.

Bailey's gives members of my group free admittance
I’ve never heard of Chics N Wings, or First Down… are they in DC or are they in VA? (I’ll do a search).
We need a place that is Metro accessible and in DC since we have members in MD (and I currently live in MD) and VA is just too far for a lot of people. Our meetups in DC are considerably larger due to it being kind of central and easy to get to via metro.
Thanks for the info!

Chics N Wings is Tysons Corner, VA, and First Down is Ballston, VA (right by the metro). Both places are small.

The local place I visit for UFC PPV has a seating capacity of about 120.
They charge a $10 cover to get in, and they admit up to 400 people. I’m told they pay $1500 for the PPV rights and they make a killing. Each person there is going to buy an average of two drinks, plus maybe food. They clear $10K easy.
I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.
I got a local sports bar to start carrying the events. It took me about 9 months of pestering the managers, but they finally started doing it! No cover charge, nice crowd…not huge but a decent amount of people where I’m sure they are making their money back. Best part of it is the distance from my house, less than a quarter mile.
I convinced my father in law to show the UFC at his restaurant here in Florida. We started at UFC 97. We dont charge a cover and we give away prizes each time and we have a 9 ft projector screen. The PPV price is pretty expensive plus you have to factor in radio advertising. Also, they charge extra for us to show it in HD, which I bet most other places don’t spring for.
