Cool poster, but does the blue & silver remind anyone ese of this:

wow
That was seriously my first thought.

More specifically, this was my first thought

I’ve got sports of all kinds on the brain this weekend.

Silly, NASCAR isn’t a sport…

You could possibly argue that race car drivers aren't atheletes
But motorsports are definitely sports. After all, it only takes people competing at something (anything really) to make a sport.

High level real-time video game competitions (including Starcraft, for example) are probably sport in my opinion, because at that point fast timing and intuition are as important as anything else.
"Yeah we came up short today but I'm cool with things." -- Juan Pablo Montoya
Right, but I’m saying that Korea should just change its name to Starcraftistan.
Since the 90’s, it’s become part of the culture that every child in South Korea must come of age by finding a computer barely capable of running the original Starcraft, adding 36mb of ram to it, and then devote every waking hour of his or her childhood to becoming a pain in the ass to all westerners that thought they had at least a modicum of skill at the game.

To it's not a sport.
I was doing some tekken tourneys in the 90s, I don’t mind it not being called a sport, I don’t need this label to enjoy myself with an activity anyway.
You don't look like a Tanaka.
I define "sport" as direct physical competition.
Chess and spelling bees are competitions, but not physical. Not auto racing because it’s just sitting & driving (though cycling & foot races are absolutely sports). Nor gymnastics or anything else that relies purely on judges’ subjective scores (boxing, mma, judo, etc get a pass because of the varied ways it can end, often not with decisions), so it’s not direct. These are all competitions, certainly, but not sports.

Well arguably not chess and spelling bees, but after that
Auto racing and gymnastics are physical activities, defined by rules, and competed at. That’s the very essence of sport.
"Yeah we came up short today but I'm cool with things." -- Juan Pablo Montoya
don’t cut gymnastics out, that is a sport. it’s physical competition between highly trained athletes.

It’s the scoring that gets me. They don’t go head-to-head by some objective metric, like time or score. It’s the same for figure skating, synchronized swimming, etc. – the judges just rank them. People complain about MMA rankings being worthless, but that’s the system used to issue gold medals in those sports.

The veracity, clarity, or similitude of a sport’s judging system doesn’t make it less of a sport—all that’s really required, from a definitional standpoint, is that there are a set of agreed upon rules within which people compete.
"Yeah we came up short today but I'm cool with things." -- Juan Pablo Montoya
It has to be physical, though - Jeopardy! isn't a sport (& I say this as an ardent fan of it).
I’m not trying to discredit a gymnast’s ability – they’re in amazing physical condition. I just don’t think a sport should be decided on such mercurial qualities. The benefit of sports is it’s instant justice – success is rewarded, fouls are punished, & everyone hates it when they’re not. Victory by judging removes that transparency.

by Scott C. Broussard on Sep 25, 2009 7:31 PM EDT up reply actions
You are the one assign mercurial qualities.
Judging/reffing/umpiring/et al. is a common element to many sporting events. Not to mention that many sports that you’d probably conclude to be legitimate allow for draws as an outcome.
"Yeah we came up short today but I'm cool with things." -- Juan Pablo Montoya
Though
I do think those are fine arguments as to why sports with judge-determined outcomes might be less preferable than those decided “on the field” or "in the ring.
"Yeah we came up short today but I'm cool with things." -- Juan Pablo Montoya
I don't mind draws, & I hope that's consistant with what I've said.
I know it’s damn-near impossible to rule out a judge’s bias, but when that’s the only way to decide the winner, it raises a red flag for me. An umpire always has to decide “ball vs. strike”, but a bad call isn’t (or rarely, I don’t know the history) a game-maker.

To come “full circle,” then (all puns intended):
- Auto racing isn’t a sport because it isn’t physical enough, despite being very competitive, and having very clear winners and losers.
- Gymnastics isn’t a sport because it isn’t doesn’t have clear enough endings, despite being very physical and very competitive.
Those are rational (as in, arguable and consistent) viewpoints, but it seems easier, to me, to just chalk up sports as the realm of all physical and competitive activities. Otherwise it’s an endless game of “Some people say cucumbers taste better pickled.”
"Yeah we came up short today but I'm cool with things." -- Juan Pablo Montoya
Fair enough
I think “Physical” and “Competitive” are fairly uncontroversial assertions, but my sticking point over judging is really where I butt heads with people.

NASCAR drivers on average lose up 10 pounds per race, all water weight. With the exceptions to cycling and marathon running could this be said for any other sport?
Don't argue for the sake of arguing....
by Screwface on Sep 25, 2009 7:00 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Riverdancers lose about that much.
I know about the water weight (my dad’s a NASCAR fan, so I get the arguments), but I can’t reconcile driving in a circle as a sport alongside soccer or basketball.
Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try Again. Fail again. Fail better. -Samuel Beckett
by Scott C. Broussard on Sep 25, 2009 7:16 PM EDT up reply actions
To define down sport to exclude activities you simply can’t “reconcile” is a fruitless exercise. Pretty much anything can be a sport—it is no affront to other sports. Curling is a sport. Polo is a sport. Race walking is a sport. Archery is a sport. Figure skating is a sport. If/when teams of Riverdancers compete and are judged, it’s a sport.
"Yeah we came up short today but I'm cool with things." -- Juan Pablo Montoya
I’m admitting a bit of irrationality there. I just associate sports with physical competition, and sitting in a car working pedals & stick shifts doesn’t count to me.

Meh
Every sport isn’t for every spectator. Even if all they actually did was work pedals and shift gears, those are still physical activities, and they still compete at them.
"Yeah we came up short today but I'm cool with things." -- Juan Pablo Montoya
Same here. Maybe thats why I associated it with being a good poster? Hmmm…

But I will be there
So I guess there’s a chance…

I know its all about the names but...
Lil Nog/Cane should be the co-main event of this one. It has more implications at LHW then Ortiz/Coleman but I guess casual fans dont buy for the better fights they buy for the names.
I hadnt heard about Rosholt/Grove. Jake is gonna send Kendall packing with a loss.
And why did they bring Baroni back no matter the length of his contract they’re gonna cut him when he losses to Amir.
My Cuzn is fighting YAY! (Karo)
i hope he wins …. his last few fights were all busts….plus he is comming out of a suspension so….its gonna be tuff…but im sure he will toss Dustin around like a rag doll!
Toss him down and the proceed to be submitted

why do u think he is still in UFC? even though he is not the most exiting fighter.
That doesn’t mean a thing. He’ll still get submitted in amazing/embarrassing fashion if he takes it to the ground. Another Submission of the Night victory for Dustin Hazelett.

he wasnt drugged plus he won the fight
the commission gave the fight to the other dude since he lied on the application and took some pain killers. not roids….
Pain killers are still drugs and he lost that fight.

no Manny is not really his cousn...he is more family friend
im his uncles son …so no im not Manny lol
I'm aware of the name
but are you sure that they’re are not cousins because the UFC has mentioned it several times on their broadcast plus I cant find any website that say they are friens and not cousins?
and here is a bloodyelbow link
that list him as Karo’s cousin
http://www.bloodyelbow.com/2009/2/18/763795/manny-gamburyan-dropping-t
dude im telling you...he is not blood related
if you know any armenians ask then what they call their family friends….cousns…i guarantee they are not blood related 100000%
I'm just saying
Why does the UFC continue to refer to him as cousin and not friend.?
Why does every website refer to him as cousin?
I’m not calling you a liar but I think you are the first person to ever say he isnt Manny’s cousin.
well...i dont know what UFC is saying
but im telling u 100% they aint related by blood. just like i said if you know any Armenian ask them how they introduce someone that is a close family friend…..thats all i can tell u..plus they trained together since they were 10 at Gogors GYM. in hollywood. i know cuz i trained there 2. so you can quote me from UFC or any other site…but trust me i know my family tree….and Manny is not blood related.
Like Mexicans
Two of my best friends are Mexican, and at every party they have at least 20 cousins. 5 by blood.

i was at the fight, he should not have won that split.

Pain Killers are worse than Steroids as far as I am concerned.
A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.
A guy who uses steroids is still playing the same game, he is just more efficient at it. A guy on pain killers is changing the rules during the fight.
A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.
All steroids really let you do is train harder and keep the results of your training longer. When you are in the fight it gives no advantage you could not achieve with enough proper training. Painkillers however do affect the actual fight, in which the lack of pain could be a serious advantage against certain submissions and strikes.
A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.
thanks man, appreciate the explanantion

May the Forsett be with you.

Or is +285 for Mark Coleman a great line? Tito is coming off surgery and hasn’t fought in about a year.

I kind of like this card more than UFC 100...
Don’t get me wrong, 100 was great, but this card really has something for everyone. I can envision the bonuses all being totally appropriate, not them scraping the bottom of the barrel like when they gave Rua/Coleman Fight of the Night.
We're just a million little gods causin' rain storms, turning every good thing to rust.
My first thought was:
Why promote Ortiz/Coleman (combined age of 98, neither is a title-contender at 205) over Cane/Lil Nog?
And I swear I will pistol whip the first person who uses the terms “casual fan” or “shenanigans”.
BOOSH
Its funny I posted the same thing above
But it is the casual fan. Ortiz/Coleman helps sell the PPV better. Is it the better fight? Hell No. Hell I would take Fitch/Almeida as a better co-main event but unfortunately Cane, Lil Nog, Fitch, and Almeida are not as well known as Coleman and Ortiz, scartch that just Ortiz.
That's it.
You and bdw are getting pistol-whipped and getting holes poked in your liters of cola.

hey

this card will kill the mayweather buyrates and 100
it should do more with two proven pay per view draws in lesnar and ortiz. boxing was smart to against 103 but they would have gotten crushed big time if they go against brock lesnar and tito ortiz on the same card. i expect 1.9 million buys.
