ADCC 2009 Live Results and Open Discussion
Weight classes are all done and we're on to the Absolute division.
Absolute and finals results are listed below; for all other results from the weekend, check the full entry.
Men's Absolute Final (click for video)
Bráulio Estima (Brazil) def. Xande Ribeiro (Brazil) via arm/shoulder injury
They tie up. Xande drops to a knee and Braulio pulls guard. Braulio rolls over looking for an armbar and nearly locks up an inverted triangle! Still trying for it as Xande defends from his knees. Now Braulio has the triangle cinched up tight, but Xande's snuck an arm inside to defend. That triangle isn't going anywhere though. Xande stands with Braulio still hanging off his front with the triangle. Braulio loosens up the triangle a bit - Xande shucks him off and follows down to half guard. Now the ref steps in to stop the fight... Xande seems to be holding his right arm. Yep, definitely an arm injury - Xande isn't moving the arm at all. Braulio is overjoyed, crying with happiness.
Estima wins $40,000 and the right to face Jacare at ADCC 2011.

My weekend is going to be completely sucked up by ADCC and ADCC related jiu jitsu activities… Good times.

Tudor is a way way way way better submission grappler so I’m rather happy he got in.

I saw him in "Surfer"...
talking about how much he loved jiu jitsu and I was like “ah, how nice—the soul surfer likes to roll a little jitz”.
I didn’t know he was ADCC level!

I will be watching K1, but I’ll watch the videos of this later.
I’m backing Yoshida (although unlikely) and Werdum.
Even if he gets knocked out in the first round, Yoshida-Leo is pretty cool.
Yoshida-Askren would be fun, but Askren won’t make it past Linden, much less Pablo.

Marcelo by anything he feels like, Kron is awesome but Marcelo is DaVinci.

Who are the favorites?
We totally need a “Who’s Who of BJJ” primer for ADCC.

Wouldn’t be hard to do a primer on just the favorites, some of the guys in there are pretty hard to get info on just because of where they compete etc

It's gonna be a hell of a weekend
"Yeah we came up short today but I'm cool with things." -- Juan Pablo Montoya
Rubens Cobrinha Charles for a podium finish.
We’re hoping to get him up to Qld for a seminar next month :P

No chance he wins. Hall heel hooked him as an alternate in 2007. He’ll do it again this year if he has to.
If they get each other it will be a relatively horrific match because they’ll both try to out 50/50 guard each other, Ryan is awesome but Rubens can’t ever ever be counted out because he has a great tendency to get ahead on points real fast, especially considering that Ryan typically enjoys working from his guard more which is dangerous as far as points go.

I think you’re mistaken. Hall submitted Gordinho at ADCC 2007. I’m pretty sure that was his only match. See here: http://pageman.multiply.com/video/item/109/ADCC_Verbal_Submission_via_5050_position_Ryan_Hall_Vs._Rafael_Gordinho_Correa
Cobrinha and Hall had a match last year, and Hall was choked out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JlO__FnYsuc
Cobrinha has been just about unbeatable for the past couple of years. I would not be at all surpised to see him win his division.
Tom Lawlor as ADCC 2009 champion would be the height of hilarity.
A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.
It would have to be a Stephen Bradbury like performance.
This shirt is "dry clean only", which means it's dirty.
hey! Easy on the Aussie jokes there.
But seriously Steve made a lot of money on the corporate talk scene for years taking the piss out of his own win.

Jeff Glover
Kron Gracie
Galvao/Estima
Xande Ribeiro

If I knew more of these players, I might have picked differently… My money’s on Abreu for heavyweight, though.
It hasn't started yet though right?

Watching this
It just dawned on me that footage from the World Judo Championships 2009 from Rotterdam in August should be out by now—and so it is, on Judo vision.
"Yeah we came up short today but I'm cool with things." -- Juan Pablo Montoya
Nice. I haven’t really watched any Judo except random highlights and the last Olympics. Too much emphasis on an important yet marginal aspect of fighting (personal opinion). The guys are obviously hella talented but I haven’t watched it enough to understand all the subtleties of the guys trying to throw each other.
It is but a marginal aspect of MMA to be sure
But the sport of more or less trying to throw somebody is in and of itself pretty awesome to watch.

I finally took a little nap and missed a ton of stuff. Oh well, highlights are sure to go up soon.

Jacare beats Drysdale in supermatch
How it went:
Jacare started out playing on top, but without offering much danger. With both again on their feet, Jaca managed to land a takedown, working from atop his adversary. Relying on his famed explosiveness, Jacare upheld the attack, but Drysdale annulled his attempts well.
With both again standing, Jacare took the chance to go for an inside-trip takedown. With Drysdale again standing, the two spent a good while trading grips.
With the first five minutes over and points now counting, Jacare took the initiative and barely missed landing another takedown. It was Drysdale’s turn to go on the attack and stir up the crowd. Jacare managed to defend well, though, and the two went back to trading grips.
After another attempt, Jacare finally managed to score the two points that would define the match in his favor at the end of regulation time.
“Wow Fuji had an acrobatic armbar attempt on Hillary but Hillary escapes. Keep an eye out for that in the replay later today after this is over. "
“Hillary Williams has double underhooks in front of Megumi Fuji, trying to pass. Hillary Williams is now in Megumi Fuji’s closed guard. Hillary Williams is now in side control over Megumi Fuji. Techno dance music continues in the background. Hillary gets the RNC over Megumi Fuji! The biggest win of her career for sure!”
“Hillary does a little dance of joy on her way off the mats.”

HELP!!!!
I’m having issues wiuth the ADCC site! all i can find is a Feed 1 which just shows a banner as the video… I cant find anything or VOd aww help im missing it!!!
Even a broken clock is right two times a day.
I joined BE yesterday so I could take part in the discussions on this weekends highlights in form of both ADCC and the K-1 tournament. As soon as I registered though I got an unpleasent surprise: I had to wait a full 24 hours before I could write a simple comment. Today I’m out of the quarantine and the semifinals are about to begin. Unfortunately I didn’t order the stream so I have to do with live bloging from http://thefightworkspodcast.com/.
My predictions
Werdum
Magalhaes
Galvao
Garcia
Yahya
That’s the kind of move you would expect from Ryan Hall, but Estima in the finals against Galvao. Wow
Marcelo just lost! 3-2 to Popovich
Braulio is for real!
I have a buddy in the UK who has Braulio come by and do seminars about once a month. My friend told me to watch for him at ADCC, and he sure hasn’t disappointed yet!
Man
Two days in a row I missed a ton of of action—I can’t wait until they put up the highlights and finals.

Wow
Rafael Mendes pulls off a heck of an win over Cobrinha. Announcer says he’s the youngest person ever to win at ADCC?
"Yeah we came up short today but I'm cool with things." -- Juan Pablo Montoya
Very disappointed – yesterday they re-aired the broadcast after it was over. Today I assumed they would do the same thing so I did not wake up to watch the early broadcast. And now there isn’t one on now.
…
Same. The stream was a little disappointing all weekend, but I’m hoping the (allegedly HQ) VOD will make it worthwhile.

Hmm, if they did it yesterday they still might today although I didn’t see a rebroadcast when I was looking for it yesterday. They might not be rebroadcasting yet because the event is still going because they’re going to hold the absolute now.
I think you’re right. They’ll probably start the rebroadcast after the Absolute.

Ended just before noon. Now waiting for the Absolute division to start, though nobody seems to know who’s competing.

My eyes hurt from watching all of this, grappling overdose, must find people to roll with…. immediately cough die.
Also wow on some of the surprises, shocker of a day. Braulio getting his vert on and Ryan Hall taking 3rd against Glover!
In sad news… I’m still upset over MG.

Reading Breen’s recaps, I see Saulo Ribeiro announced his retirement from competitive grappling after the Monson match?
"Yeah we came up short today but I'm cool with things." -- Juan Pablo Montoya
Yep. He took the mic after his loss to Monson, was reminiscing about competing in ADCC years ago and announced his retirement.

Ricco vs Xande
I’m still surprised at Ricco’s general physique
"Yeah we came up short today but I'm cool with things." -- Juan Pablo Montoya
Seriously. Looking real good, I’d guess around 230.
by Chris Nelson on Sep 27, 2009 12:49 PM EDT up reply actions
When the brackets came out and he was at under 99 kilos, Jordan Breen said on his show that he wouldn’t come in at that weight unless he came sans a leg.
Ricco lost both of his matches, and I really hope that doesn’t stop him from staying in great shape.
"Yeah we came up short today but I'm cool with things." -- Juan Pablo Montoya
Announcers think they are off mic, but they aren't.
"Yeah we came up short today but I'm cool with things." -- Juan Pablo Montoya
So I am confused..
Did Werdum win the competition in his weight class or did someone else?
"I will knock your hair black!"- Ken Shamrock to Tito Ortiz
Werdum won the over 99kg division
"Yeah we came up short today but I'm cool with things." -- Juan Pablo Montoya
Should add that he defeated Roberto Abreu for the title. Monson defeated Saulo Ribeiro for 3rd.

Where does Vinny fit in the picture?
Hes my favorite so far.
"I will knock your hair black!"- Ken Shamrock to Tito Ortiz
3rd in the under 99 division
"Yeah we came up short today but I'm cool with things." -- Juan Pablo Montoya
And, I should add, locking in 4 stunning submissions so far (including one that just went down in the absolute contest)
"Yeah we came up short today but I'm cool with things." -- Juan Pablo Montoya
How did he get 3rd?
He only lost once right?
"I will knock your hair black!"- Ken Shamrock to Tito Ortiz
He defeated Glover Teixeira via triangle for 3rd. I think he lost to eventual winner Xande Ribiero before that, but I missed a chunk of action.
"Yeah we came up short today but I'm cool with things." -- Juan Pablo Montoya
That makes sense.
So he has a chance to place first in the Absolutes?
"I will knock your hair black!"- Ken Shamrock to Tito Ortiz
Hes still in it. I wouldn’t pick him, but he’s having a banner weekend so who can say.
"Yeah we came up short today but I'm cool with things." -- Juan Pablo Montoya
I'm picking him.
I’ve thought the dude was awesome since the TUF days. Buttt, i dunno how he fairs in grappling comp.

Men’s 99kg (218 lbs.) Final
Fabricio Werdum (Brazil) def. Roberto “Cyborg” Abreu (Brazil) via points (9-0)
Once scoring began, Werdum passed Cyborg’s guard three times for the win.

Incisive comment
I wish this were not the case but it’s safe to say that just about every match of Monson’s looks the same. The opponents are interchangeable but Monson’s always in the same place doing the same thing.

I can’t remember the last time I really enjoyed watching Monson compete in anything.

The Monson/Kharitonov fight was enjoyable to my tastes, even if it was kinda silly.

I was gonna say, that would’ve been enjoyable except I really wanted Sergei to win.

Gunnar Nelson!
My Icelandic brother from another mother, doin’ work against Monson in OT. Great stuff.
Dude is a beast.
He prepped for this at Renzo’s NYC school. Young kid too, he is going places.
It is difficult to translate what is going down on the mats this weekend to MMA
But it’s certainly great for him at this point of his competitive grappling career.
"Yeah we came up short today but I'm cool with things." -- Juan Pablo Montoya
Well, it shouldn’t. I don’t think his ability to pull of impressive submissions is what has been in doubt in his MMA career. To get back to the UFC, it would be in his best interest to start lower again, get some ring time and become better at handling the striking aspects of the game.

Jacare vs Estima at some point in the future appearntly, perhaps as far out as 2011. Commentators express confusion as to where the next ADCC will be. “Not in Spain, that’s for sure,” maybe in Chicago?

The combination of very long term planning for special bouts and sheer confusion as to the precise members of the brackets is funny.

It was more or less just like giving the mic to a row of audience members—being the ADCC, the audience members are well informed and connected, but not exactly commentators. They clearly meant well though, and I’m sure it will improve by the next time around.

Congrats to Braulio, what an awesome performance!
Terrific weekend of grappling, I’m shot, going to sleep now, tomorrow will be a good day of training jiu jitsu because of psyching up all weekend for this haha.

Ostensibly, the winners of the superfight and absolute division square off in the superfight of the next ADCC.
This year’s superfight was supposed to be Drysdale (2007 Absolute winner) vs. Gracie (2007 superfight + 2005 Absolute winner).
