Strikeforce Signs Vitor Shaolin, Makes Deal With the AFN, Herschel Walker Must Prove Himself First, and Did Trigg Get Shortly Dropped Due To EA Sports MMA?

8154-strikeforcelogo_medium

Strikeforce has signed a deal with the American Forces Network. The Fight Network has the press release:

Afn2006_medium

SAN JOSE, Calif. (Sept. 24, 2009)–Premier Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) promoter STRIKEFORCE and SHOWTIME Sports, have teamed up with the American Forces Network to deliver live MMA events to the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces serving overseas via AFN, the worldwide television broadcast network. The deal calls for all STRIKEFORCE events for the remainder of 2009 to be distributed on AFN including the Nov. 7 M-1 Global co-promotion of Fedor Emelianenko vs. Brett Rogers, airing live on CBS Television Network.

The debut offering—this Friday’s Strikeforce Challengers event on SHOWTIME—features American military hero Tim Kennedy, the 29-year-old Special Forces soldier who has served tours of duty in Middle East, versus undefeated middleweight Zak Cummings in the main event from Tulsa, Okla.

"We are proud to be able to bring live Strikeforce events to the men and women of The United States Armed Forces," Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker said. "These are people that have dedicated their lives to protecting our country so it’s great to be able to give something back to them. And the timing couldn’t be better. Having Army Ranger Tim Kennedy headline a terrific Challengers event is the perfect start."

"Special thanks to Scott Coker for providing the AFN Broadcast Center with the approval," says AFN's Executive Director, Jeffrey White.  "Without his initiative and clear understanding of our worldwide military broadcasting mission, delivery of Strikeforce to our well-deserving audience overseas would not be possible."

...

"We are delighted to add Strikeforce mixed martial arts programs to our AFN schedule," said Corey Slutsky, Sports Director at the American Forces Network.  "We provide a touch of home to U.S. military service members and their families deployed around the world and we salute the Strikeforce team for their support of the troops."

An elated Kennedy said: "This is freaking fantastic news. Right now, the Special Forces group that I recently left are deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Every single friend of mine is over there and I was planning on emailing every one of them the results of my fight right after it finished on Friday, but instead they get to watch it. I’ll be emailing everyone tonight and telling them and letting them know."

You have to feel good for a guy like Kennedy to get this opportunity.  You can tell in his comments how happy he is that his fellow soldiers and friends will get the opportunity to watch him fight on TV.   This is a real "feel good" story here for those soldiers that are overseas, protecting our country, and for those like Kennedy who go beyond their duties.   This is a good deal and a no brainer from Striekforce.  Kennedy stated:

Kennedy spoke to the popularity of MMA amongst his fellow soldiers, "It attracts the same kind of people: Intense, excited, aggressive, athletic type people. Also, the skills that guys use in MMA are skills that guys use to stay alive in combat. Boxing, wrestling, Jiu-Jitsu, that’s stuff that soldiers use to survive. Some of the Special Forces guys train in that stuff everyday. And for them to get to watch some of the guys that are the best in the world at it is exciting."

Kennedy, (10-2) recently accepted an offer to serve in the Texas National Guard after spending six years in The United States Army, the last three as a sniper in the Seventh Special Forces Group.

He feels no pressure whatsoever being the main event Friday. "If I’m not getting blown up or getting shot at then it only means it’s going to be fun for me," he said. "This is not life threatening. This is me going out and doing something that I enjoy and I enjoy fighting."

In his last start, on June 19 at ShoWare Center in Kent, Wash., on Strikeforce Challengers, Kennedy dominated Nick "The Goat" Thompson, stopping him on the ground with an onslaught of punches in the second round (2:37).

"After 9/11 happened, I wanted to do something for my country," he explained. Kennedy’s new job will allow him to remain in the armed services while maintaining enough flexibility to take his MMA career to the next level.

"The military is my life," said Kennedy.  "I am going to serve as long as they’ll let me. I’d love to retire in uniform."

Strikeforce Signs Shaolin

Vitor-ribeiro_medium

MMAJunkie has the scoop:

Strikeforce today added some depth to its lightweight division with the signing of Brazilian jiu-jitsu prodigy and MMA standout Vitor "Shaolin" Ribeiro (20-3).

...

The 30-year-old's only career losses have come to Kawajiri, Gesias "GZ" Calvancante and (in his most recent bout) Shinya Aoki. All are or have been ranked among the lightweight division's very best fighters.

Trigg Shortly Dropped From UFC Due To His Appearance In EA Sports MMA?

Eammawhite_medium

Jonathan Snowden has the report:

Trigg Tragedy

The real reason Frank Trigg was dropped from his UFC contract and then quickly undropped? Dana White was furious when he found out Trigg was a part of the upcoming EA Sports MMA video game. White had decreed no one who had signed with EA, in competition with his own UFC games, would ever fight for his promotion.

When he found out about Trigg, White was livid. Cooler heads prevailed, but look for Trigg to get another tough fight. If he loses again, he's gone.

My question is why did the UFC sign him in the first place when Trigg was rumored to be in the game for about a year?  How could they be so anti- EA Sports MMA yet not find out that the fighters they are signing are associated with the game? Sounds odd to me.

Herschel Walker Must Prove Himself First Before Fighting For Strikeforce

Herschelwalker_medium

Josh Gross has some news on the Herschel Walker signing by Strikeforce:

Yet the reaction Strikeforce received for the signing was largely positive. It generated a good deal of press for the burgeoning fight promotion, earning mentions in places MMA might usually not. Strikeforce vice-president Mike Afromowitz was pleasantly surprised to hear Walker's signing discussed Monday on New York's hip-hop radio home, Hot 97. It's that kind of exposure -- off the Internet and beyond the reach of MMA media -- that made the deal well worth their time and effort, even if the concept of a man Walker's age jumping into MMA is hard to swallow.

Now the work begins. Though the 1982 Heisman Trophy Award winner at the University of Georgia signed a deal to fight, there's no guarantee he will.

Walker will live in San Jose, Calif., for eight to 12 weeks like any other pro fighter plying his craft at the American Kickboxing Academy. If his body holds up, if he proves capable of fighting, then a bout will come. But not before then.

"We're going to plug him into our fight training," said "Crazy" Bob Cook, one of the chief trainers at AKA who also serves in talent evaluator and matchmaking capacities for Strikeforce. "I told him I want him out at our gym for a 12-week camp. He's going to be in there with all the boys."

Despite his advanced years and limited fighting experience, Cook sees Walker as "an athlete that's beyond a lot of guys that are in their early 20s."

Walker underwent a mini tryout with Cook before signing the deal with Strikeforce, and he did well enough to earn the opportunity. He showed himself to be more of a striker than grappler, though Cook noted Walker's "great natural balance and wrestling ability."

"He's a tremendous athlete," Cook said. "It is something he's committed to wanting to do.

This EA nonsense is just pissing me off. This is a sport, albiet, an “entertainment” sport…but seriously, it’s a video game. EA’s game will do nothing but add some competition to the mix. GET OVER IT DANA! Seriously. The idea that some fighters will get the shaft over a game is just irritating. And this is coming from a guy who is all for Dana’s brash attitude.

Think about it this way. The UFC might have a agreement with THQ that they have all UFC fighters for their game so that Undisputed has the exclusive rights to UFC fighters.

Good stuff as always Sup.

Except for the Trigg part. Trigg should get cut because he is an old never-was, not because he is in EA’s game.

I get your desire to promote all non-Zuffa MMA. But your inclusive of anything that is negative towards Zuffa seriously hurts your credibility.

I don’t buy the stuff about Trigg. The same day Junkie reported Trigg being cut, Jeff Cain came right out and said it was total BS. It was within hours of the story.

I know that (which is why I question it if you read below), but if you are going to bash anyone, bash Jonathan Snowden. He is posting that, along with the WEC news that Rome based on his article on.

It is not meant as a bashing, I did not attack you, I simply said that only including negative Zuffa stuff hurts your credibility.

by Lynchman on Sep 24, 2009 8:26 PM EDT up reply actions

What was negative Zuffa stuff on this post anyways?

“UFC looks stupid for signing a guy they supposedly didn’t know was in the EA game, look like assholes for cutting him after one fight, then look stupid again for deciding to keep him instead”

Of course I’m paraphrasing.

Big pet peeve of mine

ENOUGH of the longest titles on the planet. It’s annoying.

Trigg would get subbed or KOed in every simulated EA MMA game. ;-)

May the Forsett be with you.

Too much stuff in one thread and it doesn’t make too much of a difference. He was already out with an injury, and Coker told him just to take the rest of the year off. He keeps hurting himself trying to rush back in.

I think it's bigger news than Trigg's EA thing..

Strikeforce’s LW champion still wont be able to return to defend his belt.. and it is possible that they take of the interim tag already so that Melendez and other LWs can fight for the real belt while Josh recovers.. is that smaller news than a gossip about EA sports?

if you don’t think the story doesn’t make a diff because the bottom line is that Thompson is still out.. well the trigg story doesn’t make a diff either cause bottom line is he still is in the UFC..

by Anton Tabuena on Sep 25, 2009 3:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Here's the difference

The Trigg story makes the the ufc look bad while the Thomson story makes Strikeforce look bad, I’ll let you guess which one of those stories doesn’t further his agenda.

Walla walla walla I'm an idiot.

Look, you do a nice job, but the ONLY time you post anything about Zuffa is if it is bad news, conflict or some sort of problem.

You can deny that, but it remains true.

103 prelims numbers, you suggest that they were bad. Why no talk about TUF or UFN ratings?
Boxing beats UFC in ppv
Trigg getting let go, despite one site (MMA Weekly) shooting down the rumors hours after they went up.
sluggish ticket sales for 102
If memory serves, you posted complaints regarding ufc 100 broadcast in the U.K.

This is the stuff you put up. I have never seen you post something positive. You are pretty selective about what you post. Nothing bad about Strikeforce or anyone else, but nothing really positive about the UFC.

As I said, my own suggestion is to simply focus on all things non-zuffa. It allows you to offer up postive content and provide postive coverage to companies that can use it.

You provide some nice links and do great layouts, I would simply like to see a more balanced approach. Either cover good and bad on UFC or not at all.

by Lynchman on Sep 25, 2009 12:56 AM EDT reply actions   2 recs

I get what you are saying, but not everything is black and white.
Those things you mentioned were not negatives for the UFC.

For example, the UFC 100 complaints overseas had nothing to do with the UFC, and everything to do with the ESPN coverage in the UK.

Trigg getting let go is something I said wouldn’t make sense if the UFC did that based on his participation of the EA Sports game. So, I am questioning whether that report is true or not based on what Jonathan Snowden wrote.

Everyone wanted (and still wants the PPV numbers for the UFC 103 card and the boxing card), so I reported it. It was made into a big deal, so I reported the first set of numbers.

etc.

Why do I report certain things you ask? Obviously because no one has reported it yet. If someone reported it, I wouldn’t report it again. No one even posted that Strikeforce signed Shaolin or that Kennedys fight will be shown to the troops tomorrow on AFN, so I reported it because I think it has some importance. Most of the news is reported by Nick, Leland, Anton, or other BE members, so I let them cover those topics. I usually cover non-zuffa news because thats what gets the least coverage around here.

you dont seem to understand the meaning of “reporting”…

Everything you copy and paste has already been reported… you simply copy and pasted it here. Which is fine but please stop calling it “reporting”. COPY AND PASTING OTHER NEWS SOURCES IS NOT REPORTING.

It looks like pretty much everyone of your posts regarding “ea mma” is about to be wasted bytes just like all your posts about Affliction, Pro-elite, the AFL, etc…

The industry is consolidating… Look at the stock price movement for THQ through the past week.

There are major players looking to buy THQ and EA is one of them… whats more – Even if EA doesnt end up the buyer – Viacom, Warner Bro’s, Microsoft, etc… whoever ends up with the company will most likely also end up buying EA.

YES even EA is expected to be purchased within the next 6-8 months.

With the consolidation of the industry that’s planned the likelihood of EA and THQ merging through multiple possible avenues is pretty high.

Fedor is not the only one who carries a “curse”… mmasupremacy continues to be the “Jeremy Lappen” in MMA message boards and forums. Whatever you support seems to have no chance.

LOL

You guys have to check out some of Sup’s posts on the Sherdog Contender’s forum. Here’s one of my faves:

MMASuPreMaCy:

Exactly, Roy Nelson is the only guy that is legit and is the guy Dana blasted for being fat and not wanting to present that image of a UFC fighter or an MMA fighter. 1-2 year later, here we are, he is on TUF with Kimbo Slice and ex-NFL players and a guy named “boobies” by his coach.

Response from Steve4192:

I guarantee you that if Schoonover, Wren, or Schaub signed with Strikeforce, you would be slobbering all over their nuts. But now that they have signed with the evil empire, they are nothing but garbage.

Sup i like that you post news about the other MMA orgs but don’t pretend that you have no bias against the UFC.

Strikeforce is absolutely killing DREAM ...

… with all these free agent signings.

I guess the co-promotion deal with DREAM is “we are going to sign all your fighters, and then let you use them on occasion”.

Seriously, Strikeforce has been poaching DREAM’s roster big-time.

by Steve4192 on Sep 25, 2009 12:13 PM EDT reply actions

Just Stateside

Dream will never put on a North American Show. So I view it as Strikeforce giving these guys some North American exposure.

I’d imagine these deals are non-exclusive (with dream anyway)

you bring up a good point… Dream is divesting out of MMA. to what extent? nobody knows yet.

But all this “alliance” talk was simply a cover for Dream to do this without it looking like its shrinking.

Will it get completely out of the mma business? I dont know… But I believe the “cage” they are now announcing is similar to the “hex” IFL announced right before they closed up shop.

It looks to be a last ditch effort.
