Just to be clear...

I’m going to get really annoyed when people keep referring to Hoffman Estates as “Chicago” when it is a suburb.

Also, I’ve covered IFL events in that building in the past that have sold out. I have no doubts that this card will sell out as well. It is kind of a small venue so it shouldn’t be an issue.

Are you new?

You are never going to have any kind of show in a metro area that doesn’t use the name of the primary city. So get annoyed all you want that will never change.

A) It’s 30 miles outside of Chicago. That’s not exactly “close”

B) Having lived in the suburbs of Chicago multiple times over my life I grew tired of always being asked “How’s Chicago?” when people meant to ask like “How’s Naperville?”

C) …get a sense of humor, you’re making yourself look like a bit of a jerk

I think that’s different for several reasons.

1. They used to be based in NY.
2. They are a regular sports team, and everyone sort of knows the deal with that by now.

This is a one off thing, say what town the damn event is in. Is there an easy way to get from Chicago to wherever this is?

I guess this is a small arena that was able to sell out for the IFL, so that’s not really a big deal. But I would think that it would be a good idea to have a fight with Fedor in a major city so people could have an easy time flying in to go to the event.

Yeah, it’s pretty much highway to highway from the city. Easy to get to

Editor - BloodyElbow.com - SBNation's mixed martial arts headquarters.

do you need a car though?

Again, it’s not an issue if it could sell out locally, but having to rent a car can add lots of expenses to people under 25, which i assume would be the people they expect to go to this thing.

Either way, I still think it’s bad to do this city mislabeling thing with a 1 off event. Morons might hear chicago, buy the tickets, and then realize it’s not actually in chicago and be mad.

I'm not fully up to speed on the Metra in that area...

but I know you can get to Schaumburg from the city by train and Hoffman Estates isn’t too far from that. I’m pretty sure you can manage without train.

I’m excited about this fight . I remember when a lot of people said a big striker with good take down defense is the type of fighter that can give Fedor problems. They said it about Sylvia , and we’ve realized that Sylvia isn’t that good a striker (at least not compared to the elite, Randy outboxed Sylvia for example) and then about Arvloski (who is a good striker but can’t take a punch) – so maybe Rogers is that fighter . When has Fedor fought a capable 6"5 265 lbs striker with 84 inch reach? It’s much safer to go with the statistics and say that where Cro Cop , Nogueira , Sylvia and Arlovski have failed , Rogers will fail too . But I think Rogers poses different problems this time . I don’t think he’ll be bullied to the floor that quickly like Sylvia or KOed like Andrei (at least not in the 1st round). So this might force Fedor to try to take it to the ground , and finally we might see , if not an upset , Fedor sweat a little and we might actually see what his cornermen look like as the fight will proceed to the second round .
That’s my take on it at least . Am I giving too much respect to Rogers?

by JoelMan on Sep 24, 2009 10:32 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Where can we see some footage

of anyone attempting a technically executed take down of Rodgers? I’m looking forward to the fight but Rodgers better train off his back cuz you know that is where he is going to end up very quickly.

Yes, but when has he fought a tire-changer? Huh? Huh? That’s a TOTALLY new challenge! This is in NO way a complete waste of time and a bullshit fight. NOT AT ALL.

Rogers is going to rotate Fedor’s spare tire

by Steve4192 on Sep 24, 2009 3:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Rogers is ranked 7th in the world man … Schilt is built so long and lean taking him down was pretty simple .. Rogers , at least physically , is much harder to take down .
Calling this fight bullshit is pretty lame , the truth is no one knows how hard Rogers is to take dfown , you’re just assuming .
Again , Rogers has almost the exact record Shane Carwin has , does anyone call Carwin’s fight with Lesnar bullshit?

by JoelMan on Sep 25, 2009 4:18 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Are you shitting me?

Carwin has fought top guys. Rogers has fought…. Andrei who in retrospect has proved everything Dana had to say about him.

I think this might be the first major mma show i ever attend. I dont think ill ever get another chance to see Fedor in the Midwest ever again so i think im actually going to pay for overpriced tickets.

Strikeforce - Fedor v. Brett (that other Brett)

Current Line Up:

Fedor Emelianenko (the greatest fighter in the world) v. Brett Rogers
Jake Shields v. Jason Miller – Strikeforce Middleweight Championship
Gegard Moussasi v. TBD – Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Championship
Cris Cyborg v. TBD – Strikeforce Women’s Featherweight Championship

I don’t care who you are, that’s a card right there. It’s not going to be a great mainstream success or anything, but from the perspective of a fight fan, it’s wonderful.

I wouldn’t call it a great card just yet. It’s two very solid fights plus a couple of great fighters without opponents. It has the potential to be a great card, but I wouldn’t call it great based off of two fights.

Your reluctance aside, I never actually said it was a great card. I implied it pretty loudly, sure, but I never actually said that.

Actually, you said it was a “card.” And it isn’t actually that. It’s 75% of a card.

Agreed...

This will be a nice card. Most likely, Cyborg will be fighting Coenen and some sort of combination of Lawler, Jacare, and Lindland will also be there.

I will say it is shaping up to be a great card.

Unless they do, in fact, include that stinky skunk Matt Lindland. Get him out.

Her last fight was in August. This show will be in November. It’s nearly three months between fights. It’s a little bit of a quick turnaround I guess, but it’s not like there’s a ton of top tier competition for her at Featherweight. I mean, unless she takes that fight with Urijah Faber.

Yeah, just thought they’d want to get a bit of a marketing push behind her to capitalize on the Carano win and haven’t seen much in the way of it yet. Thought maybe they’d have her headlining again, or at least co-headlining.

I don’t think she’s really headline material without fighting Gina.

Gina is the one that drew mainstream eyeballs last time, not the idea of women fighting or Cyborg.

by Phildo on Sep 24, 2009 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

but now they've seen exactly why gina shouldn't have even been int here with her

people will tune in, to see the woman who tore gina apart

That’s what I’m saying, though. I thought they’d try to get a push behind her where she could get to that point on her own. Build on the momentum of the win.

I don’t think it’s possible.

It would be great if the biggest fighters were the draws, but that’s not the case and will never be the case.

It doesn’t matter who the best sports teams are, people will all talk about the popular ones.

I don’t think it’s possible to build cyborg up to where gina was, so they shouldn’t even waste their time.

by Phildo on Sep 24, 2009 1:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thats why she will be on CBS. That will build her up, after they repeat a million times how she beat Gina.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Sep 24, 2009 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, just thought they’d want to get a bit of a marketing push behind her to capitalize on the Carano win and haven’t seen much in the way of it yet.

Well, we’re talking about an organization that put the biggest money women’s match in (North American at the very least) history on Showtime. Not on CBS, not on PPV, but on Showtime, from which their potential take from the broadcast portion of the show is the least of the three options.

To follow that decision up, they then decided to officially announce the debut of the greatest fighter in the world a mere six weeks prior to the fight taking place. Think about how long the build up is for some of the biggest fights in MMA and boxing history. Six weeks is nothing.

For all of Scott Cokers (tremendous) ability to promote locally, he makes some questionable decisions that make me second guess his ability to achieve a similar level of success on a national level.

Of course, his ability to promote this show doesn’t truly affect me. I’ll certainly watch the show whether he plasters my TV and radio with ads from now until the show or if he doesn’t utter word one about the match(es). But then, you and I and everyone else reading this aren’t the people who are most important in order to grow their brand and develop into a legitimate rival promotion to the UFC.
