Rashad Evans vs. Thiago Silva Likely for UFC 108
According to MMA.Fanhouse.com:
Left without an opponent for his next fight when Rampage Jackson walked away from the UFC, Rashad Evans said Wednesday that he expects to fight Thiago Silva next, likely some time in December or early next year.Rashad also talks about turning down a fight with Randy Couture and why the Rampage fight was so important to him. Check it out at MMA.Fanhouse.com.
"Thiago Silva is a good fighter, I'd like to fight him and I think he wants to fight me," Evans said. "When I saw him after he fought Keith Jardine, he kind of gave me a nasty look that I interpreted like he wanted to take me on, and I'd like that."
"I think I match up really well with Thiago Silva," Evans said. "He's a great striker, and I love his focus. He's going to be a challenge, and that's the kind of fight I want."

Are you quoting Russell Peters by any chance?
I wonder if Evans is going to start using his wrestling to take the fight to the ground. Evans COULD win in the standup, but it is also very dangerous for him as well. Thiago does get tagged quite frequently, but I wonder how Evans will handle Silva’s aggression?
The crazy thing about these two is that they are extremely good fighters, but it just goes to show how great Machida is especially since Machida just dominated them.

people have got it the other way around… Evans COULD win in the ground. but it is more dangerous for him there. Thiago has a very good ground game.
Evans has more technical boxing and Thiago doesn’t have good defense. he has a bigger chance to keep the fight standing.

While Thiago is a legit BJJ Blackbelt, we have yet to see what he can do off his back. In most of his UFC fights that took place on the ground, he had top control. Also, strong wrestlers on top of a BJJ guy could potentially nullify sweeps and submission attempts from the bottom guy.

Ofcourse, everybody knows that
My point was, Evans has an advantage standing and he shouldn’t risk going to the ground with thiago.. He could win in the ground, sure, but I don’t think he should take a chance on that..

I’m not at all convinced that Evans has more technical boxing. He throws fast and hard with good form, but there’s more to it than that. Meanwhile, the only time Thiago has shown his ground game in the UFC was against Houston Alexander, which doesn’t exactly tell us anything.

That could have meant anything, Rashad.
Thiago Silva proposed to his wife by angrily glaring at her.

Quick KO for Rashad
Not bad. It’ll look good on his highlight reel. ;)

I actually see Thiago taking this. Rashad doesn’t use his wrestling anymore and that’ll be his downfall.

He could take it to the ground,
But why risk it when Thiago is a better grappler? Rashad is more explosive and powerful standing so i dont see any problems in him just standing and KO’ing Silva.

I dunno, man. Machida exposed Rashad’s poor footwork for all the world to see. Thiago may not be nearly as technical as Lyoto, but he’s probably a better overall striker than Rashad. (Not sure that he’s a better grappler, though.)

he’s probably a better overall striker than Rashad
no not really.. Thiago has power, but he has sloppy stand up. Rashad has more crisp and technical striking. Also, Thiago is a lot more dangerous in the ground than Rashad.
Just cause of Thiago’s knockouts, people are forgetting that he’s a wayyy better ground fighter than he is at stand-up. Rashad’s best bet is to keep this one on the feet, cause thiago always gets hit in every fight, and if Rashad lands that power punch of his, it’s game over..

great fight
rashad gets +2 experience points for having had greg jackson already studying and analyzing thiago for the jardine fight.
combine that with good wrestling and footwork, and rashad gets the fight to the mat when he needs to and finishes by TKO late in the 1st.

As a lot of people said before Machida,
it’d be foolish for Rashad to completely abandon his wrestling. Apparently he didn’t get the memo, and we know how that turned out.
Not sayin’ Thiago Silva strikes like Machida by any means, but Thiago does have some lightning in his hands.
Bring back that All-American stuff, you’ll take this one home easy, Rashad.

He really needs to learn to integrate both of them together. Keep the guy focused on blocking both your shots and your hands and you are more likely to succeed with both.

How many times does rashad get to fight the same guys after jardine? already studied him already seen what doesn’t work. Jardine is rashads test dummy

i just think its kinda bs they use jardine as a feeler and then let rashad have an advantage for his fight. If i was keith id be pretty upset by now

Its not anyone elses fault Jardine loses
so he has no reason to be upset. If he would acually win continually, Rashad wouldnt have to step up and finish the job.

I’m sure he’s pissed that the UFC keeps giving him opportunities against top fighters. He’d be much better off fighting cans.
by Phildo on Sep 23, 2009 9:36 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
the fact he keeps losing he shouldn’t be giving top 10 fighters then Rashad face them directly after,

Like it or not, Rashad is ranked 3, Jardine is ranked 6. There’s going to be some crossover between their opponents.

Great idea for the UFC to pair up two former competitors that both fought Machida in a fight like this to clarify which one of them is closer to a rematch so they both aren’t on the same course eliminating other possible contenders at 205.

I don’t look at a KO over Chuck ‘dancing with the stars’ Liddell an outer-worldly accomplishment. I would actually favor Thiago in this one, because frankly I think he hits harder.

Did you see the punch that floored Chuck?
Would have KO’d every single human alive.

Rashads gonna have 3 KO losses in a row
first Machida, second Thiago Silva, and then another when Rampage comes back!

Rashad really matches up well with Silva, he seems like he a an all around good game in all dimensions of the fight.
for all intents and purposes, just consider all my posts as works of satire.

have we ever really seen silva’s ground game tested in the ufc? i’m interested to see what he’s got in his arsenal if rashad decides to take it to the ground.

same,
unless rashad gets dropped in his “slow starts” (doubt it), i think he wins this one, late 1st round, or early 2nd round (T)KO..
Rashad gets exposure from TUF, he if beats a top 10 fighter in Thiago, he’s right back up as a contender… A fight against rampage would be way more dangerous for him stylistically i think, so this could be a blessing in disguise for Evans..
